Orofino Babe Ruth ended the season with a win over Grangeville, taking 1st Place in the Central Idaho League (CIL) Tournament on Wednesday, June 29. Orofino Babe Ruth is a growing program that has shown great success in the last two years. This year we had 30 rostered players with two full teams, Orofino Blue and Orofino Gray.
Orofino Blue was coached by Head Coach Matt Gamble and assistant coaches, Will Crockett, Jeff Wicks and Dave Olive. Orofino Blue finished with an undefeated season and took first place in the CIL Tournament, beating Grangeville with a 6-2 victory. Jake Runia was awarded the Tournament MVP. Coach Gamble said, “Everyone on the team contributed to the successful season and the players continue to grow athletically. I’m proud of their exhibition of great sportsmanship.”
Orofino Gray was coached by Head Coach Chris Merry and assistant coach Josh Tilley. They too had a successful season, ending with a win against CV and placing 3rd in the CIL Tournament on June 29th. Coach Merry said, “Babe Ruth is such an important transition, not only in terms of baseball skill and ability, but maturity and personal development. It has been so rewarding to see the change in our players, most of whom have been on our team for the past two seasons. This season we stressed the importance of personal responsibility, along with improvements on the field. I’m proud of our team, and the efforts they have made. As they continue their baseball journey, I hope they will look back on this time with fond memories. It was my goal to spark an interest in the game of baseball that will last a lifetime.”
It takes a lot of work and countless volunteers to run a successful program. Orofino Babe Ruth would like to thank the coaches, players, parents and the many volunteers who helped make this another successful season. Thank you to Kathleen Tetwiler and Orofino High School for working with us on scheduling and facility use. Thank you to our umpires, specifically Wyatt Roy, Jesse Mcallister, Ken Hobart, Gil Gray, Dave Olive, Chris Merry and any others who bravely stepped onto a baseball field this year to assist with the grueling tasks of an umpire. Thank you to the members of the Orofino Babe Ruth Board, Will Crockett, Josh Tilley, Crystal Gamble and Joey Schneider for organizing the ins and outs of the program. And finally a big shout out goes to those who made donations or donated their time to help with the functionality of the program. The list could go on and on, but a few I’d like to mention are, John and Carol Lonsbury, Mike and Sally McNees, Corey and Jen Runia, Jeff Wicks, Laura Bardavid, Dave Olive, and Earl Vicory. There were many others who made contributions this year and we are very grateful for all the support we received.Thank you! Orofino Babe Ruth
