Steven Paul Olin passed away at home on Wednesday, July 22, 2020. He was born to Gerald “Fred” Olin and Dorothy Tower Olin on May 28, 1947. He could not wait to come into the world and was born on the way to the hospital. His parents wrapped him in a blanket and placed him in Big Red’s tool box.
At an early age he went to work in the woods with his father. He grew up in logging camps and attended the Seventh-day Adventist Church and school. He graduated from Orofino High School in 1965. He was drafted into the Army and sent to Vietnam.
After Vietnam he returned to the Orofino area and married Jerilyn Dykes. During their marriage they had four daughters. He participated in the local VFW where he was Post Commander in 1976-77 and later Quartermaster. He was honored as Mr. VFW in 1980-1981 for his service.
In the late 1980s he moved to Alaska and drove the Dalton Highway from Fairbanks, AK to Prudhoe Bay, AK. After that he moved in 1992 to Oklahoma and went to work in the oil fields. In 1994 he met Elsa “LaTrecia” Thomason and they came back to the Northwest in 1995 where he returned to logging. They lived a short time in Orofino and then moved to Elma, WA where they were married on August 10, 1996.
In 2002 they returned to Oklahoma where he went back to working in the oil field until he retired in 2007. In 2014 he returned to Orofino to be closer to his daughters and grandchildren. In 2018-19 he served again as the VFW Commander. He also was the President of the local American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Dorothy Olin, his brothers Jerry, Lee, Fred Jr. and Doug, his sisters Gloria Severson and Helen Olin and his daughter Jennie Olin-Van Huss.
He is survived by his wife LaTrecia Olin, his siblings Jim, John (Donna) and Barbara Olin; his daughters Jamie (Ryan) Smith, Stephanie Olin (George Lukes) and Shawn (Steve) Province; his step-sons Randal, Michael, and Davin (Julie) Hartzell; grandchildren Kayla Knapik (Rob Davis), Lj (Kelsey) Strawn, Rudi (James) Irby, Steven Olin, Elizabeth (Kole) Steely, Kate Province (Kian Shell), Tristen Womack, Quinton Cook, Alex Province, KC Hileman, Jacqueline Salzman, Gracie Hileman, StevieAnn “Emma” Province, and Racheal Province, Haley (Jerrid) Jones, Blake, Shana, Jordan, Drew, Carrie (Hartzell) and Payton Crispen. Also, his great grandchildren Ava Steeley, Logan Province, Parker Davis, Luther Strawn, Hazel Jones and Oliver, Walter and Everett Hartzell.
A military funeral is planned for Saturday, Aug. 15 at Cook Cemetery at 10 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at the Pink House Recreation Site at 12 noon.
