Richard Duane Fagley

Richard Duane Fagley passed away peacefully at Kootenai Medical Center from health complications. He was the loving husband of Barbara (Riepma) Fagley, Orofino, ID. Richard was born in Delaware, OH, son of Frank Edward Fagley and Ruth (Bush) Fraker. He entered Wittenberg University under a full swim scholarship and was a champion swimmer to the point that in 1961 he was on the Olympic Swim Team.

Three years into his higher education, he left school and joined the USAF military as a Cadet Navigator. He finally graduated from Troy State University in Alabama in 1973 during his military career. Richard spent 25 years in the Air Force, working up through the ranks, flying KC-135’s / Fixed Wing, CH-53 Helicopters, and a “desk” at SAC Underground Headquarters.

During his Military career he received many awards including the “Distinguished Flying Cross” for Valor during a difficult rescue mission in Thailand. Richard had seven tours of duty during the Vietnam Conflict, and was proud of his service to his country. Following his military career, he worked for 17 years as a financial advisor for USPA/IRA and Prudential.

He retired in 1998 and spent his time buying, selling, and restoring “classic” 1978-1982 Cadillacs. He loved traveling the US roads from coast to coast, camping with his family, and spending time exploring the world with his grandson, Miles.

Richard was a devout Christian, and most recently a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Pierce. His nightly devotions, and church attendance were almost mandatory for him and his wife. He always thought that worshiping and honoring God was a commandment, not an option for us to choose.

Richard is survived by his wife, Barbara (Riepma) Fagley of Orofino, ID, his son, Devin Kirk Fagley of Spokane, WA, daughter-In-Law, Marie-Pierre Butzman of Cloverdale, OR, and three grandchildren, Miles Edward Fagley, Joshua Anthony Butzman, and Gabrielle Fal’hon Butzman.

He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Edward Fagley, his daughter-in-law, Andrea (Annie) Vinegelen Fagley, his brother, David Wayne Fagley, his parents, Frank Edward Fagley, and Ruth Bush (Fagley) Fracker, father-in-law, Edward Riepma, and mother-in-law Nellie Pearl (Valentine) Riepma.

There will be a Memorial Service for family and friends at the Faith Lutheran Church located at 600 South Main Street in Pierce on Friday, April 5, at 11:30 a.m. Richard was a 25 year retired combat veteran and his service will include full military honors. There will be a time for fellowship and food following the service.

Please join us as we celebrate his life. The church will provide the main course of the meal, but feel free to bring a potluck dish to share in the feast.
