Gwen Ellen Anicker of Pierce, ID passed peacefully at the age of just 71, on March 26, 2020 with her daughter by her side at Clearwater Health and Rehab after a four year battle with Liver Disease. The Covid-19 outbreak and mandates prevented her son and other family members from being there physically but their hearts were there with her.
Gwen was born October 8, 1948 in Harvey, ND. She was the second of four daughters born to Kenneth and Bernedean (Olson) Martwick.
The family lived in Kief, ND before moving to Portland, OR and eventually settling in the small town of Tualatin, OR where they lived in a little house down a tree covered lane on the banks of the Tualatin River. It was a wonderful place to be a kid! Swimming, fishing, boating, catching crawdads, horseback riding and just exploring the woods around them made for some wonderful memories. This is also where her love of animals grew.
Gwen attended Stafford Elementary, Willamette Jr High and West Linn High School. She married Jim Barber her senior year and joined him in Germany after her graduation. They had one daughter, Jennifer and the marriage later ended in divorce.
A few years later she met and married Joe Anicker and she and Jennifer moved to the Nursery he had started in Sherwood, OR. Soon after they welcomed a son, Jeff. This marriage also ended in divorce.
Gwen held many job titles over the years but some of her favorites were running the Portland, OR office of Meditest, an insurance physical testing company and driving for Tri-Met, Portland’s public transportation. Her kids were amazed that their mother could drive a 60 foot articulated bus through the streets of downtown! In the late ’80s Gwen and one of her best friends, Dorsa Mutch started rehabbing houses in the rougher part of NE Portland bringing abandoned houses back to life. They were rehabbers before rehabbing became so popular and they loved every bit of all the hard work, blood, sweat and tears of laughter they shared.
Gwen moved to Pierce, ID in the early ‘90s to be closer to her daughter and family, eventually settling in Greer, ID. She became an in-home care provider and had many clients and coworkers who touched her heart over the years before her own illness forced her to move back to Pierce with her daughter.
The family would like to thank Clearwater Health & Rehab and Clearwater Hospital and Clinics for all the care and kindness they have given mom over the last four years.
Gwen is survived by her children, Jennifer Anicker-Billups, Pierce ID, Jeff Anicker (Kate Kenski), Tucson, AZ, her six grandchildren, Charlie and Wyatt Billups, Henry, Robin, Ada and Vincent Anicker, her three sisters Kay Billings (David), Mesa, AZ, Gail Martwick (Randy), Caldwell, ID and Jean Martwick of Scapoose, OR along with nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
In remembrance of Mom we ask that you think about your local animal shelters and maybe give a stray the forever home they deserve.
