Results of May 25 Horseshoe Tournament

Gary Kleinsmith is the organizer of the Memorial Day Horseshoe Tournament. He sent this followup:

Another Jess Lyda Memorial Horseshoe Tournament has come and gone. The weather cooperated most of the day. We had one little shower in the middle of the tournament, but it wasn’t bad enough to get anybody very wet. Mostly everyone had a good time and enjoyed the event. We had some players that didn’t show up for one reason or another, probably because of the nasty-looking sky. But the day was warm and it turned out to be a pretty good day.

We wound up with seven teams of players. We really need more players to keep this tournament alive. I’m willing to keep having the tournament if the players will keep coming to it. We can’t have much of a tournament without horseshoe players. We have three more years on our big trophy, so we will do at least three more years. If people don’t show up, I can’t do another 10 year trophy. We will do it one year at a time.

A big thank you to all our players that did show up and play, and thank you to our sponsors; Empire Lumber and the Elkhorn Bar. Thank you to Buzzards Roost for making the trophies.

The results of the tournament were:

1st place: Mike Briceno of Lapwai & Cyrus Squeochs of Lapwai. They won trophies, $250 each, and got their names on the big trophy.

2nd place: Darold Johnson of Orofino & Lori Callahan of Genesee. They won trophies and $150 each.

3rd place: Henry Lopez of Lewiston & Laurie Dale of Coeur D’Alene. They won trophies and $100 each

We pitched pony shoes this year in the 4 Shoe High Score Contest. The winner was Carroll Smith of Stites with 2 points. He won $50.

First team out and winner of the Cupcakes and $5 each were: Ted English of Genesee and Lenette Smith of Stites.

Winner of the set of horseshoes drawing was Ted English of Genesee.

The Community Club breakfast started out slow, but picked up for the last two hours. I think the weather kept people in bed a little later. It was about the same for the hamburger cookers. It started out slow until people got hungry, then there was a pretty good spurt later.

Thanks to all the volunteer help. Overall, I think it was a success. We’ll see you all next year.
