Canada Hill Fire-Shelby White

The 18-acre Canada Fire Hill started near Dewey Avenue in Orofino on Sunday, July 11. At one point the fire threatened 75 structures. Firefighters on the ground and in the air responded to the blaze, which was first reported around 6 p.m., to fight the fast moving fire. Crews from Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association, Orofino Fire Department, Sunnyside Rural Fire Department and Idaho Department of Lands, as well as a variety of air attack craft responded. Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office and Orofino Police Department assisted with evacuation notification to some homes in the area, as well as traffic control. Control lines were constructed with the help of 23 aircraft, seven engines, two Type 2 hand crews, and one private dozer. Two hand crews and two engines were on scene Monday mopping up. There were reportedly no structures lost in the fire and no injuries. As of Tuesday, July 12, the cause of the fire was still being investigated.
