Ruth Brown, 80
Orofino resident, Ruth Brown was born in 1939 to Stuart R. and Thelma Tidwell in Nampa, Idaho. She had four brothers.
Ruth graduated from Nampa High school in 1957 and majored in accounting at Brigham Young University.
She was a bookkeeper and also worked as Proof Department head for First Security Bank, operating early I.B.M. machines.
Ruth moved to Orofino in 1967 and worked for Washington Water Power (now Avista Corp.) as a teller and bookkeeper for 21 years, then a meter reader for nine years. This job caused her to average 8 miles of walking per day in Orofino, Greer, Weippe, Pierce, Headquarters, Kamiah, Kooskia and Stites — sometimes over the top of fences in snowshoes. She remembers visiting nice customers and sometimes suffering dog bites. She retired in 1998.
Ruth married Sid Brown in 1973 in Orofino. They have a combined family of three daughters, a son, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Sid ran the body shop and worked as service manager for Barnett-Thompson Chevrolet for 38 years.
Ruth was Girl Scout leader for several years and is involved in the Orofino Rural Fire District, helping build the new fire station. Other interests include sewing, baking, woodworking and the outdoors.
A family celebration is planned.
