As we looked out of our dining room window on Monday morning we knew Spring was on the way! A robin was on the lawn just south of the barn, looking for food. The song, When the Red, Red Robin Comes bob, bob, bobbing Along, reminded me that the First Day of Spring was only five days away.
The temperature climbed to 50 degrees on Saturday, which turned out to be a great day to light a fire in our outdoor fire pit. Lawn chairs were set out and we had a picnic to help cure any Cabin Fever symptoms we were feeling.
The NOAA forecast is for more rain and snow showers for the next week. We probably should keep our snow shovels handy. I hope the robin has an extra layer of feathers when the weather changes.
The Fraser Get Together Club held their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 8. The wood stove at the Fraser Community Center had been started by Jeff Sauter, so the building was toasty warm when everyone arrived. Marge Carlson and Rosena Aultz served a hearty beef stew, rolls, dessert, coffee and lemonade for lunch at 12 o’clock.
The meeting was called to order by President Donna Brown, Tammy Sauter called roll and read the minutes of the last meeting. Dawn Cloin was absent so no treasurers report was given.
The club is planning on purchasing two 13 x 13 foot outdoor canopies to use when large gatherings are held at the Community Center. Jean Bennett is in charge of the project.
Sally Marks’ name was drawn for the White Elephant Gift.
The hostesses for the April 12 meeting are Tammy Sauter and Dawn Cloin.
The McLaren family are new to this area and are interested in the history of the Fraser Community. Emily and her daughters, Bethany, Josie, Lili and Elsie were given a book entitled, Judd’s in Fraser, Idaho, written by Claud Judd and published in 1995.
The book tells about the history of the Judd Family dating back to 1520 when Thomas Judd was born in Trevalga, Cornwall, England and lists the Judd ancestors up to the time when Claud’s father Lawrence Reed Judd was born on Oct. 16, 1893 in Moscow, Idaho. He married Laura Bell Reed on Sept. 26, 1917. Five children were born to the family. Claud was the first child born, followed by Dorthey Marie, Harry Lewis, Clarabell, and Verla.
Lawrence passed away on June 5, 1980, and Laura died on Feb. 10, 1987. They are buried in the Fraser Cemetery.
Claud’s book gives the history of the Fraser Community and the hill top area. It is a great resource for any history buff.
The Memorial Service for Elata Hutchins was held on Thursday, March 9, at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino, at 11 a.m. Pastor Don Blaine, a long-time friend, came from Oklahoma to officiate over the services. The members of the Rebekah Lodge handled the pot luck dinner at the Weippe I00F Hall, at 2 p.m.
Thanks goes out to Christine Brown, Vickie Jorgenson, Karla Beddingfield, Tina Supak, Ruth Ann Mowrey and Sherry Schlader for serving in the kitchen.
Elata will be remembered for her many years of service to the Weippe Community. She is survived by her husband of almost 64 years (Emerald), and their four daughters, Susan, Lynette, Connie and Kathy and their families.
She worked part time as a Payroll Specialist in the famiy business, was the volunteer treasurer and bookkeeper for the Ladies Bowling Association, and the Weippe Hilltop Heritage Museum. She and Emerald enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing, huckleberry picking and tending a large garden. They skied all over the west and Canada and she snorkeled in Hawaii.
She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and was generous with her time, her resources and her heart.
She and Vickie Durant Smith always handled the September Baked Food Fundraiser for the Weippe Hilltop Heritage Museum. She will be remembered.
