Do you know why we need the Holy Spirit? Well, we need Him because we cannot come to know Jesus unless the Holy Spirit leads us to Him.
The Bible says, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come” (John16:13KJV).
As the “Spirit of truth,” He guides us to Jesus who said of Himself, “…I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”
So the Spirit leads us to Jesus and Jesus reveals the Father to us. Jesus told Phillip, “…he that hath seen me hath seen the Father” (John14:9KJV).
The Holy Spirit does not speak of Himself but of Jesus. The Bible says, “…the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me” (John15:26KJV).
Jesus says, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” (John5:39KJV).
So the Holy Spirit only hears the truth and will only speak the truth as it is in Jesus.
The Holy Spirit will show you things to come. The Bible is full of prophesies spoken by holy men and women of God as they were moved by the Holy Ghost (2Peter1:21). All of these prophets were moved by the same Spirit, so only the Holy Spirit can guide us in our understanding as we study the Bible.
Also, the Bible tells us how to study.
The Bible says, “Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine. For precept must be upon precept…, line upon line; here a little, and there a little” (Isaiah28:9-10).
The prophesies can only be understood by letting the Bible interpret itself and since the Holy Spirit was instrumental in the writing, only He can show us the truth that Jesus reveals in the prophecies in the Bible.
