Eight years ago, a seed was planted when Kami Nibler, Donya Caldwell and Chris Whitten were discussing an idea of a way to raise money to build a new fire department building for Elk River. The idea was for Chris to grow his hair and beard for a specific amount of time.  At the end of that time, he would go clean shaven if we could raise $5000. Now, so that everyone understands, Chris was a well-known member of the community and was known for his long hair and beard.  It was his trademark.  So for him to do this for the fire department and the community, it was no small thing.

Chris has since passed on, but the objective of that very first event has continued and only grown. The goal that year was exceeded, when the actual amount raised was $6000, and then the fundraising went from there. It grew to include an auction of donated items.  Kami has hosted these auctions each spring at her establishment, Tom’s Tavern for the entire eight years. More and more people become involved each year and through the years, the auctions have raised a total of $73,919 towards the new building.
