Burton Eldred (Bill) Baird, 82, Orofino

Dec. 17, 1931 Dec. 23, 2013

Bill Baird, age 82, of Orofino, Idaho, passed away Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 at Clearwater Valley Hospital. He was born at home in Denver, CO, to Alice E. and Eldred Baird.

Bill moved to Orofino with his mother in 1945 and graduated from Orofino High School. He joined the Air Force and spent three years in Germany.

Bill came back to Orofino and married Bernice Walden on Dec. 24, 1954, working at the O-Mill, until moving with his family to southern California in 1957.

Bill earned his associate’s degree in electronics, going on to work for Hughes Aircraft, then McDonald Douglas, before retiring in1988.

Bill moved back to Orofino after retiring, happy to be “home.”

Bill will be remembered for his loving, giving heart, always thinking of others before himself.

Bill was a self-sacrificing man who loved many people and hated no one. His five children were first and foremost in his life, speaking to us often of his fondest memories—his high school boxing days, the friends he knew, and especially, the great times and friends and hunting experiences at Camp 14.

Bill is survived by his children, Irma Desmet (Eugene), Huntington Beach, CA; Cheryl Havel (Clayton), Colorado Springs, CO; Gary Baird of Orofino; and Linda Hall (Butch) of Ahsahka. Bill is also survived by his brothers, David D. Baird of Meridian and Robert R. Baird of Chandler, AZ; his grandchildren, Sarah Grandizio-Betz, Sada Wertz, Megan Webber, Asa Desmet, Joe Burchett, Amanda Burchett, Alese Burchett-Harrington, and Kalub Hall.

Bill’s surviving great grandchildren include Brooks Webber, Alice Wertz, Alexander Desmet, Nathan Burchett, Danny Burchett, Cheylianah Watters, and Jeremiah Betz.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Eldred Baird, Alice Story, and Francis Story; sister, Barbara Bell; son, William J. Baird; nephews, Richard Baird and Robbie Baird; former wife, Bernice Shipwash; and sisters-in-law, Sally Baird and Doris Baird.

   He will be forever missed.

A quote (author unknown) spoken by Bill’s daughter Irma sums up our feelings for our Daddy: “Sometimes the poorest of men leaves his children the richest inheritance.”

Walter Holmgren

Walter Holmgren, father of Betsy Lang, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, while in his winter home in Aguanga, CA.  All the family members were at his bedside at his passing.

Walt grew up and went to school in San Diego County in California. Walt loved living in Idaho during the summer, not the winters. He loved to have his morning coffee on the cabin porch in Lenore counting log trucks as they passed by on Highway 12 through Harpers Bend. Walt enjoyed camping and fishing throughout the area, especially Winchester Lake with his wife. Adeline

Walt worked construction through most of his life. At 18 he joined the United States Army in April 1957.  He served his time in Germany. He was honorably discharged in April 1960, and returned to construction work until 1990. He later worked for the United States Forest Service from 1997 until 2006.

Walt is survived by his wife Adeline of almost 53 years; his brother, Robert Holmgren, of Alpine, CA; his son, Ken Holmgren and his wife MaryAnn of Aguanga, CA; and daughter Betsy Lang and her husband Bruce Lang of Lenore.
