Annabell
Schilling, 89, Orofino
She was the youngest of three girls. Her oldest sister was
Bonnie Spencer, who passed away last summer. Her next oldest sister
was Eva Spencer, who is also deceased.
Annabell met and fell in love with Herman (Sonny) Schilling
when he came to Orofino from
Sonny and Annabell were married
They have five children: Robert (Herm) and Kathy,
They also have many grandchildren and great grandchildren,
the newest of which (Gloria’s grandson, Oscar) was born just weeks
before her death.
Annabell taught pre-school in her basement for 20 years or
more—having many children of her former students. She ran a tight
ship but they all thought highly of her and her teaching methods.
She had a great sense of humor—some of you saw that-maybe
some didn’t know that. A story she shared with her kids was how she
and her sisters when they were young – took red fingernail polish
and painted their sleeping father’s nose. I think he chased them out
of the house when he woke up, but I also think all of them had a
good laugh over it...even him!
Sonny adored Annabell and she loved him with all her heart.
Mom and Dad had a special little saying to each other. He saying, “I
love you,” and her responding with, “I love you the mostest.” They
continued that little love response even as she lay critically ill
in her hospital bed.
We children are so thankful for the care they have gotten at
Mom and Dad are charter members of The Ascension Lutheran
Church and have been attending there for 50 years or more.

Vivian
Lucile Miles, 97, Orofino
Vivian Lucile Frey, Miles, 97, was born
She often rode horseback from place to place. She recalled time
spent living in a convent in Wallace. Later Vivian, her mother and
stepfather Bernard McCartney, settled in
Vivian and John were married in
The couple
had one son, Grant C. Miles. Early in their marriage the couple
moved to Weippe. Vivian spoke of hard times when she and Grant were
left alone to care for things at home while John was away in the
Army. During that time the family also lived for awhile in
For nearly 40 years Vivian, and John along with their son Grant,
operated a dairy known as Whispering Pines Ranch. Vivian milked
cows, hauled milk, helped make hay, cooked for hay hands, took care
of the record keeping, and anything else that needed to be done
around the farm.
Several summers, great nephews and a great niece came to spend time
on the farm and Vivian taught them about farm life, to milk cows,
and the joys of living in the country. As adults they loved to
return for a visit to the farm with their children.
Many will remember Vivian sitting, for hours, on a little stool, at
the end of the milk tank in the milk house filling jugs with milk
for her customers. She was always interested in people, and
concerned about their daily lives. These people weren’t just
customers to her. Each one was her friend, and she had many!!
The family sold their dairy herd and Vivian and John retired in
1993. Enjoying daily visits now from her great-grandchildren, she
continued to tend her flower gardens, play with the children, and
live contentedly in their home on the ranch until 2005.
Failing health forced her to join her husband John at Brookside
Landing, an assisted living facility in Orofino, where he had
resided since 2002.
She loved farm life, music, flowers, and later loved being a grandma
and great-grandma. She was the most wonderfully devoted, loving,
fun, indulging, grandmother her four grandsons could have ever had.
They spent countless days playing in her yard, climbing her
honeysuckle tree, and playing music and games with her. She was
never too busy to take time out for them. Whether for a story, a
game, or to bake cookies or make doughnuts, she was ready. She even
got herself a three wheeler bike and attempted to ride with them,
but gave that up after a few bruises and skinned knees!
A favorite funny memory was the day the boys entered Grandma’s house
and exclaimed, “Grandma, what is that smell?”, only to discover she
had picked up the wrong can and was dusting her furniture with
“Raid” insect spray! They had many good laughs over that incident!
She was always so supportive and proud of each one especially
encouraging them in their music, fully enjoying their playing and
singing. She was there for each piano recital, concert, little
league, ball game of every type, and track meet, even when the meets
were in
She would do anything for her grandsons. Her son and grandsons, and
then great-grandchildren, were the “apple of her eye”, her “spice of
life” and she loved them whole heartedly. Her wall sported a plaque
entitled “To a Very Special Grandmother” that conveyed the return of
the boys love and devotion to her.
Vivian was an accomplished pianist and along with her son Grant
played for many community dances during the l940-1950 era. Vivian
later dedicated her life and talents to the Lord and for many years
she was pianist and organist for the
Year after year she was known as the “Cookie Lady” at
Vivian never lost her talented touch on the keyboard and continued
to entertain her fellow residents at Brookside Landing with her
beautiful piano music. She was so proud when, following in Grandma’s
footsteps, Randy became a pianist also. Now her great-grandchildren
also follow in her musical footsteps, displaying their musical
talents and playing on her piano.
Vivian served as Secretary, Treasurer of the DHIA (Dairy Herd
Improvement Association). Upon her retirement she was honored with a
dinner, attended by fellow dairymen, their wives, and members of the
Dairy Science Department of the
Vivian’s lifelong dream, and an answer to years of prayers, was
accomplished when at the age of 80, with the assistance of a
genealogical researcher, she was able to locate her birth family.
She always believed that she had an older sister but had never known
her. She now discovered that she was the second child in a family of
six children born to her birth mother. She was able to make the trip
to
Vivian is survived by her son Grant and wife, Sharon, of Weippe;
four grandsons and their wives: Russel and Cindy Miles of Weippe;
Randal Miles of Hollywood, CA; Robert and Susie Miles of Maupin, OR;
and Ryan and Elissa Miles of Bend, OR; eight great-grandchildren:
Jonathan, Christina, Emily, Jeremy, and Elizabeth Miles of Weippe,
Holly and Jack Miles of Maupin, OR and Cash Miles of Bend, OR; a
brother Benny Ustariz, of Placerville, CA; a sister Cathryn (Kay)
Covell, of Camorillo, CA; special niece and nephew, Norberta St
Estaben of Chino, CA, and Louie Mujica of Palm Springs, CA.
She was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, her
sister Mary Louise Mujica, two brothers, John Ustariz and Joseph
Ustariz, and a grandson Grant David Miles. It has been hard and sad for her family to see such an intelligent mind fading during her last days here on earth. It is wonderful to know however, that in the hereafter her sharp intelligence has been restored, and as in the words of the old hymn, “When We All Get to Heaven, What a Day of Rejoicing That Will be!” A memorial celebration of a life well lived, will be held at the Weippe Wesleyan Church, Weippe, ID on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Weippe Wesleyan Church Memorial Fund, |

Donna lived in Washington D. C. with her husband for a couple years
and then they moved to
After her divorce, Donna moved back to
Donna was extremely well read and kept an extensive personal
library. Her interests encompassed everything from politics and
history to organic gardening and cooking. Donna was especially fond
of science fiction. When not reading, Donna enjoyed visiting her
children and grandchildren, traveling, working in her garden, and
taking walks.
Donna’s greatest accomplishments did not come from the places she
had been or the things that she had done but in the person that she
was. Donna was always kind to people and animals and she hated
conflict of any sort. Donna believed that as the human race we had
an obligation to treat other living beings with kindness and
respect, compassion and tolerance.
Donna had strong opinions of right and wrong and she did not enjoy
sarcasm; a person should say what they mean and mean what they say.
Donna’s quiet ways were often misunderstood but they hid a soul full
of strength, determination and sometimes just plain stubbornness.
Donna is survived by: daughter Ruth Couie, her husband Aaron and
their children Jacob and Ethan of Riggins; daughter Delores Dodson
of Moses Lake, WA; daughter Linda Bovard, her husband Brett and

operated it until 1992. He met and married Janice Robison in 1983.
In Clint’s younger days he enjoyed hunting, camping with his friends

family and enjoyed spending time with them. He loved his home,
watching the flowers grow during spring time and the deer and the
horses that roamed the fields.

When Iva finished
her schooling she worked at different jobs in the area.
In December 1956
she arrived in Orofino in search of work. Someone in town suggested
that she might get on at the Arcadian Nursing Home in Greer. So she
caught the bus to Greer and talked with Mrs. Whitney, the owner, who
told her that “there are many jobs in a nursing home”. So they
decided that Iva would stay overnight and look the situation over.
Well, she stayed three nights and then announced that she would like
to work in the laundry. She worked with a grateful heart in the
laundry, in the kitchen, upstairs and downstairs, in the garden and
in the canning room. In the early 60’s the Whitneys sold the nursing
home because of their failing health. By this time Iva had become an
important member of the Whitney, Bird, and Goodwin families. When
the Whitneys moved home Iva became a member of their household. She
had kitties and dogs and one “Dolly Doxie” was her close buddy for
13 years.
Iva helped take
care of Mrs. Whitney during her last years and when she passed in
1968, she did the same for Mr. Whitney until he passed 10 years
later. And so it became time for Iva’s adopted families, the Birds

Brother Cleo
Ernest Patterson was born October 1946, with brother Larry Michael
coming along in March of 1954. Mom completed her junior year of
school in 1948, at Riggins, the extent of her formal training. Her
natural people skills and business sense more than made up for her
senior year!
Mom loved to
camp, fish and hunt; if not for her summer road trips her kids would
never have had the opportunity to sample every National Park and
Monument in the west. She taught us to be adventurous and
independent. She loved her birds and wildlife, except when they
damaged her garden or bright flower gardens which she carefully
tended to until poor health forced her to slow down. Family was her
number one priority and she along with her brothers, organized
family gatherings at least once a year.
In the 1960’s and
‘70’s she would take her mother and grandmother up to the mountains
above Riggins and spend the day picking huckleberries and visiting;
later she shared her love of huckleberries with kids and grandkids.
Mom worked for
various municipalities, including the Riggins Water District from
1958-1973; the Riggins Chamber of Commerce from 1973-1975; the Dept.
of Labor Job Service in Orofino from 1977 until retirement in 1993
to take care of her husband; the Clearwater County Court-house as
Deputy Clerk from 1994-2003 when she retired to spend time enjoying

Mom married

from Kamiah, ID, to a ranch on the Cavendish Grade near Dworshak
Reservoir and they made their home there until George’s death
in June 1994; in 1996, she moved to the town
of Peck near the Clearwater River.
Growing up with
three younger brothers, Mom missed having a sister and found one in
Delores Jensen while attending school in Riggins. The two were
inseparable even as poor health moved them farther apart; two hour
phone conversations and lots of laughs were common at least once a
month.
Mom loved to
dance and attend community events as often as possible. She found a
willing partner in Wilbur “Monk” Montgomery of Orofino, and they
danced, camped, traveled and enjoyed each other’s company for the
last 15 years. At times her brothers would call and ask “Have you
seen your teenage mother lately?” when she was off having fun.
She was a
longtime member and officer in the American Legion Auxiliary out of
Riggins, and a member of the Red Hats of Kamiah.
Patricia is
survived by her children, John (Arlene) Barton of Peck; Annette
Barton (Sandie) of Albion, WA; Adonna (Aaron) Shepherd of Boise, ID;
brothers Dan (Barb) of Lewiston; Cleo (Carol) of Oakdale, CA; Mike
(Diane) of Ontario, OR; sister-in-law Barb Hardin of Lewiston; seven
grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nephews and
nieces and their families which were as important to her as any,
including the Lyons family.
She was preceded

of death was, I have replied “she died from complications of having
lived a full and rewarding life”.

Betty moved to
Orofino and in September of 1966 married James Crutcher. Jim had a
daughter, Bonnie and four sons, Jim, Joe, Bill and Don so she became

she worked for the lunch program at Orofino Elementary for two years

In 1978, Jim and
Betty purchased the Oasis Bar and, along with his brother Bill, they
turned it into “the hottest bar in town.” During the 25 years of
ownership, Betty prepared many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners
for local patrons and friends.
We will miss our
daughter, mom, sister, grandma and aunt. She
could brighten up a rainbow and we will always cherish our visits,
cookies, phone calls and giggles. Betty never let any dust settle
under her and her lovely home was always open. She took great pride
in her home and beautiful flower gardens. Her gardens were decorated
with yard sale items…she loved a good yard sale so much that she
started having her own and made it an annual event. Many local
residents came just for her cookies, pies and (yes) her infamous
“cinnamon rolls.”
