Judy Ann Clark, 67, Lapwai

   Judy Ann Clark passed away Monday Sept. 24, 2012, in Lewiston, Idaho. Born on Oct. 28, 1944, in Orofino, she lived a happy life of nearly 68 years.

   On Oct. 26, 1963, Judy Van Moulken married Dwain Clark. They lived most of their lives together in Weippe, ID. There, they raised their two children, Michael and Dan. In more recent years they made their home in Lapwai, ID.

   Judy loved to collect salt and pepper shakers. She also had a large collection of porcelain dolls. Adding to both of these collections brought her great joy. Another activity that brought her happiness was traveling. Whether it be a cross-country trip or just a short ride in the car with Dwain, Judy could not get enough of it. She loved her family dearly and selflessly went out of her way to make them happy.

   Judy joined her mother, Dorothy, and daughter, Tracy, in Heaven and is survived by her husband, Dwain; children, Michael and Dan Clark; grandchildren, Bradley and Maranda Clark; and brothers and sisters, Rainy Miller, Dorthene Cowger, Charlotte Nelson, and Marshall Woolfolk.

   A graveside memorial service was held at Riverside Cemetery in Orofino, Sept. 29.

Kenneth Lemmon, 81, Orofino

   Kenneth Carol Lemmon, 81, of Orofino died Monday, Oct. 1 at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino.

   At his request no services will be held. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel & Crematory in care of arrangements.

Larry M. Kropf, 90, Orofino

   Larry M. Kropf, 90, a resident of Orofino, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation in Orofino.

Nellie May Clifford, 74, Orofino

   Nellie May Clifford, 74, of Orofino, passed away Sept. 27, 2012. She was born on Feb. 10, 1938 in Boscawen, NH and married her prince charming, Kenneth William Clifford, Sr. on Easter Sunday 1957. They had three children; Kenneth Clifford, Jr., Thelma Gober, and Theresa Gumfory, all residing in Orofino.

   They later divorced after nine years of marriage, but Nellie always believed in fairy tale endings. Over the years, she and her children moved to Florida and Utah, and then settled in Orofino. She worked many years at the Ponderosa restaurant.

   One spring day in 1998, her prince charming came back into her life and they reunited in marriage on June 20, 1988. They spent blissful years before he died on July 17, 1991.

   Nellie retired in 2000. She joined the Church of the Nazarene and felt in her heart the calling to be baptized. It was one of her proudest moments. She also enjoyed spending Wednesday evenings at the Ponderosa having dinner and reading the Clearwater Tribune with her best friend Neva Ennis.

   A celebration of Nellie’s life was held at the Church of the Nazarene in Orofino on Oct. 3.

Terrance Patrick, 69, Orofino

   Terrance Lynn Patrick, 69, of Orofino, died at his home in Orofino Monday, Oct. 1, 2012.

Al Kaufmann celebration of life

   A celebration of the life of Al Kaufmann will be held this Saturday, Oct. 6, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, beginning with recitation of the Rosary at 10:45 a.m., followed by a Memorial Mass at 11 a.m.  Al, who passed away here in Orofino in mid-September was laid to rest in his family plot in Oregon, but this Saturday will be an opportunity to celebrate his life as a faithful parishioner and member of this community.  Immediately following the Mass everyone is invited to the Little Flower Room to enjoy one of Al’s favorite meals, a meatloaf dinner.

   Al was a familiar face to all who attended Lumberjack Days over the past several years, as he and Ethel kept the Doughboy Booth running in good order.  Al was a charter member of the council of the Knights of Columbus back in his native home in Oregon, but was always a faithful attendee at local Knights of Columbus meetings, and was especially devoted to the prayers of the Rosary, along with his wife of many years, Ethel. 

   This Saturday will be a good time to bid a fond farewell to our friend Al, who always greeted us with arms opened wide and saying, “I need a big hug!”

James Leslie Gilbert, 64

   James Leslie Gilbert, 64, passed away peacefully at home Sept. 8, 2012, one day before his 65th birthday. He was born Sept. 9, 1947 in Moscow to William E. and Josephine Kayler Gilbert. The family moved to Orofino when Jim was a toddler.

   He contracted polio from the vaccine when he was seven years old which resulted in damage to his left arm and shoulder. His shoulder and wrist were fused when he was a senior in high school. His father died when Jim was 15 and he and his twin brother, Jack, were raised by their mother. Jim’s indomitable spirit always found a way to succeed no matter what hardship he faced or task he tried.

   Jim graduated with honors from Orofino High School in 1965. He attended the University of Idaho majoring in Civil Engineering and graduated in 1969 as the U of I outstanding graduating engineer. He later earned his Professional Engineering (PE) certification.

   Jim met Dixie Barnes while attending college and they were married in 1970. After 42 years of marriage Dixie was still the love of Jim’s life. He was a great source of strength for Dixie as she battled cancer. He was by her side for every doctor appointment, chemo and radiation treatment. He was especially grateful to the Kennewick General Hospital staff and her doctors and their staffs.

   His first job after graduation was with Pittsburgh Des Moines Steel in Provo, Utah. They lived in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and California while Jim worked for PDM. In 1974 they moved to Richland, Washington when Jim took a job with the Washington Public Power Supply System. He has since worked for various Hanford contractors. He was currently employed by North Wind, Inc.

   Jim was a member of Ye Olde Car Club for many years. His first antique car was a 1931 Model A coupe which his father purchased as a project. Following his father’s death the Model A was restored with the help of family, friends, Shelley Steiner’s Auto Body and the Ford Garage in Orofino.

   He was preceded in death by his father, William E. Gilbert. He is survived by his wife, Dixie; daughter, Christine Green (Joel), Spokane, WA; son, Richard Gilbert (Charlette), Kennewick, WA; mother, Josephine Duff (Gene), Lewiston; twin brother, Jack (Patty), Potlatch; step-sisters, Connie Groseclose, Moscow; Nancy Blewett (Tom), Genesee; grandchildren, Valerie Gilbert, Kennewick, WA; Mason Gilbert, Kennewick, WA; and Lily Green, Spokane, WA. Family meant everything to Jim. He adored his three grandchildren.

   A memorial celebrating Jim’s life will be held Saturday, Oct. 20, at 2:30 p.m. at Einan’s Funeral Home Special Events Center, 915 By-Pass Highway (240), Richland.

   Help the family celebrate Jim’s life at a reception following the memorial by sharing your memories of him.

Anna Pearl Johnson Kelly, 86, Orofino

   Anna Pearl Johnson Kelly was born to Ralph and Cozy Johnson in Lamoni, IA in 1926. She married Francis Kelly in December 1947 in Pender, NE. She was a graduate of Lamoni College of Nursing. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

   She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters and daughter, Kathleen Anna Kelly Walters. Anna is survived by her husband, Francis (Fritz); sons Robert (Bob) and his wife Kathryn (Kathy) of Orofino, Dan and his wife Diane of Denver, CO; two grandchildren Christophor Kelly (Heather) of Fort Campbell, KY and Jamie Kelly (Tyke) Moore of Moscow, ID; four great-grandchildren Jennifer Renae, Kathryn Diane (KD), Amber Alicia, and Samuel Philip Alvin Kelly of Fort Campbell, KY; special nephew Butch and wife Pricilla of Iowa; and special buddy, granddog Harriett.

   Anna and her family lived in the Burt County Nebraska area several years before moving to Glenwood Springs, CO, where Anna worked as a nurse at the hospital and then began working as a masseuse at the Hot Sulfur Springs. She continued working there until they moved to Orofino where they enjoyed their retirement years.

   While in the Glenwood Springs area, the family liked to hunt elk, deer and rabbits. Each fall the family would pack up the camping gear, tents, camp stoves, etc and go up to the high country to hunt. This was a great love of Ann’s. She always called it “God’s country”. She would help set up camp and rustle wood for the bonfire. It was always such a pleasure for the family to return to camp and smell the delicious aroma of the meals she prepared with her loving hands. She always kept the campfire burning until all were back in camp and safe in bed. The family had many years of this yearly trek to the high country.

   Anna and Fritz made their daily trips to area’s outside of Orofino to enjoy the sights and wildlife. They could also watch the wildlife from their front room window in Orofino.

   Anna lost her eyesight and had to give up her daily trips. She was able to remain in her home and enjoy the family. Their son Bob came home from his job and took loving care of both parents.

   There will not be a memorial or service per Anna’s wishes.

David M. (Matt) Burgett

   David M (Matt) Burgett passed away Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012 at the Idaho Veteran’s Home in Lewiston.

   Services will be held at Southwick Bible Church at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27. Internment will be at Cavendish Cemetery immediately following.

Anna P. Kelly, 85, Orofino

   Anna P. Kelly, 85, of Orofino, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012 at her home. Funeral arrangements are pending with Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home at Lewiston.

Elaine Gleason Rinehart, 71, Orofino

   Orofino native Elaine Rinehart passed away Friday, Sept. 14, 2012. Elaine was born in Orofino April 25, 1941 to Charles H. and Stila Harlan Gleason. She spent her childhood and went to school in Orofino. As an adult she lived in several places around the U.S., including Charleston, SC and Denver, CO, two places which she particularly enjoyed.

   Her grandfather, John P. (Jack) Harlan, was a well noted historian and local authority on Lewis and Clark; she inherited her love of history from him.

   She also inherited her memory and recollections of family history from her mother and her well noted temper from her father. She shared with her family many stories and fond childhood memories of the times she spent with her “grandpa” and her much loved “Daddy.” She loved interior design and always had a new home improvement project in mind.

   Elaine is survived by her sister Carolyn Mattson; two daughters, Jo Frederiksen, The Woodlands, TX; Michele Rinehart (Tommy Nash), Fort Lee, NJ; three grandchildren, Clinton Garrett, Portsmouth, NH; Gavin and Chloe Nash, Fort Lee, NJ; six nephews and two nieces.

   She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Stila; a sister, Harla Matson and niece, Susan (Sue) Mattson Brown.

   The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Clearwater Humane Society, P.O. Box 2063, Orofino ID 83544 or charity of choice. At her request no services will be held. A remembrance, in accordance with her wishes, will be held at the convenience of the family.

Richard Lee Hughes, 73, Orofino

July 7, 1939 – August 24, 2012

   Richard Lee Hughes of Orofino passed away on Friday, Aug. 24, 2012 surrounded by his family at his home. Richard was called home by his Heavenly Father after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. He was 73.

   He was born in Carmel, CA on July 7, 1939 to Roger and Norma Hughes and was raised on the family ranch in his younger years. His mother passed away when he was a young teenager. After her death he went to San Leandro, CA to live with his grandparents and finish junior high school. There he started working in the truck shop after school.

   He met Linda Walker in high school. After graduating, they were married on July 4, 1959. They had one son, Richard.

   After their son was born he started his career of truck driving. It took him up and down Highway 101 for years from San Francisco Bay to Oregon. Soon he was driving across all the states. He hauled lumber, freight, logs, chips—you name it. He spent most of his life on the road. He missed being away from his family but he loved the road and all the places it took him and the people he met along the way.

   In 1964 he and his wife, Linda, divorced. She returned to northern California in the Redwoods by the sea and raised their son.

   As the years passed, he finally settled in Redding, CA, working for Taylor Trucking, and became very close friends with Eugene (Gene) Leach and his family. Gene was his truck boss for years. They hauled lumber, logs, chips and race cars. He reunited with his son who also lived in the Redding-Anderson area. He played around and gave advice in his son’s auto shop.

   Rick was a NASCAR “Big Time” fan, always on the weekends rooting for his guy, Dale Earnhardt, Sr. while his grandson, Dominick, rooted for Jeff Gordon.

   In 2001, Richard decided to retire. He and Linda had stayed friends all those years and he asked her to retire with him. He took a trucking job one last time on the coast for a year and hauled log homes from Montana to California bringing him through Idaho and the Clearwater.

   When the job ended he retired again, this time for good. He and Linda went on vacation to Montana and back down the Clearwater that he had told her so much about. So on their return to California, she sold her home and they moved to Orofino where it is peaceful, the rivers are clean, the people are great, and everyone says “hi” whether they know you or not. So with great neighbors and caring people they are happy they settled here.

   As Rick said every morning as he had coffee on the deck “I love it here” … with the sounds of wildlife and his deer, the sounds of the river which he dearly loved and a truck or two on the highway. He could tell what kind it was. He was happy here; and now, with no more pain, he is at peace with himself and God.

   He is survived by his ex-wife, Linda Lockwood, of Orofino; his son, Richard L. Hughes of Anderson, CA; granddaughter Nicole Hughes-Mayner and her son Vance Mayner of Orofino; Jay and Kristin Harrison and grandchildren Kaylee and Dominick of Redding, CA; granddaughter Misty Ruiz of Redding, CA and her husband Rod, their children Brice, Makayla, Nevaeh, Braden, and Maci; sister-in-law Katherine Walker of Eureka, CA; nephew Mike Wiles of French Gulch, CA; niece Andrea Thomson of Eureka, CA; and his extended family Eugene and Judy Leach of Anderson, CA.

   We would like to thank all the people who helped Richard the last two years: Dr. Peterson and John Beeh of CVH; Dr. Drakes and Dr. Meidence, Gretta and Kathy and all the nurses and staff at the St. Joseph’s Hospital and Hospice; his in-home health nurses, Lola and Dawn, and the staff at Compassionate Care; Dave at social services; and all the people who helped him along the way with this battle.

   We would also like to thank all of his friends: Keith Hanson, Mel Landers, Lou and Patty Mangum here on the hill, Keith Chandler and all the rest of you who pitched in to take him to chemo and took over the yard work. I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart-you know who you are.

   Richard was preceded in death by his mother, Norma Hughes in 1952, his father Roger Hughes in 1980, his grandparents Hughes and McDonalds, his mother and father-in-law Wesley and Kate Walker, and brother-in-law Dallas Thomsen.

   There will be no funeral service, at Richard’s request. When you see a truck on the road with logs, lumber, chips or freight remember him and country gold. An informal gathering for friends and family will be at a later date.

   In Richard’s memory the family suggests making a donation to the American Cancer Society, Hospice of Lewiston or Clearwater Humane Society for the “little guys," as Rick always said, in Bobbie’s or Dusty’s name, his best buds.

   He completed his journey with God’s arms around him as he went home.

   There will be a memorial potluck on Monday, Sept. 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the VFW Hall in honor of Richard.

Andrew Jonathan "A.J." Davis, 19, Orofino

   AJ Davis (Andrew Jonathan) 19, of Orofino died on August 31, 2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital ICU in Lewiston, from a severe ear infection causing a blood clot in his brain.

   AJ was born April 20, 1993 at St. Josephs Hospital in Lewiston. His parents are Pamela Vanderpool, Billy Watson, and Jeffery Vanderpool. Sisters are Anna Cannon, Nicky Watson, and Makalya Vanderpool; brothers, Brandon Watson and Paul Vanderpool.

   He worked at Northcon at Orofino.

   He is survived by great-grandmother Georgia Watkins, grandparents Sherri Weber, Steve Weber and Andrew Davis; aunts Tracy Weese, Zoe Davis-Takini, and Tanya Whiteley; uncles Tchad Wiley, Robin Whiteley, and Jeff Davis; cousins Alax Contreras, Jamie Weese, Bean (James) Weese, Justin McKey, Austin Whiteley, Anna Whiteley, Tristan Whiteley, Haden Whiteley, Garrett Whiteley, Daniel Davis, and Sean Davis, and numerous other loving family and friends.

   AJ was preceded by great-grandfathers, Jerry Watkins and William Davis; great-grandmother Elsie Davis; grandmothers Linda Davis and grandma Watson; brother Cody Watson, and pet dog, Buck Davis.

   Services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Orofino at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012. The family asks that you wear AJ’s favorite color – camouflage.

   Officiated by Pastor Hale Anderson, honorary pallbearers are Justin McKey, Bean Weese, Austin Whiteley, Daniel Davis, Tristan Whiteley, Haden Whiteley, Sean Davis, and Garrett Whiteley.

   AJ was a kind and giving person, in the end donating his organs. His death gave others the chance to live. It is a comfort to know that part of this beautiful young man lives on.

Oliver “Bud” Powers, 80, Peck

   Oliver Lewis “Bud” Powers passed away on Sunday, September 2, 2012 at his home in Peck at the age of 80. Bud was born to Oliver Thomas and Mary Cassie Oma (Johnson) Powers on August 21, 1932 in Pleasant Valley, Arkansas. 

   He served in the United State Army. After being honorably discharged in 1952, he moved to California where he met the love of his life, Shirley Monson. The couple was married on Oct. 9, 1953 in Reno, Nevada, living for a time in California, where their twins Karen and Ken were born.

   After a brief stay in Lewiston, they moved to Wallace where he managed a Chevron station and their daughter Pam was born. In 1959, they moved to Arkansas, then back to the Northwest, settling in Clarkston for the next nine years where he managed a Chevron in Lewiston.  Their son John was born in 1963. The family moved to Orofino and finally Peck. 

   Bud managed Chevron and Shell stations in Orofino and owned and operated Big Canyon Grocery in Peck. He also worked as Transportation Supervisor for Joint School District 171 from which he retired.

   Bud enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time outdoors. When his children were young, the family spent nearly every weekend out exploring river banks, rock hunting and looking for arrowheads. At family gatherings, he loved to play his guitar and lead everyone in sing-alongs. “You Are My Sunshine” and “Down in the Valley” were particular favorites. For many years, he played the Peck Santa Claus so convincingly he even had his own grandkids fooled.

   He was a skilled mechanic and always had a project pickup he was working on. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife Shirley, visiting his home state of Arkansas, visiting his many friends and family, reading, walking, gardening, and watching birds.

   Bud loved his family and took great pride in their accomplishments, bragging on them constantly. He will be dearly missed.

   He is survived by his sons Ken and wife Renee of Andrew, Texas and John and wife Vickie of Lewiston; daughters Karen Fowler and husband Alan of Peck, Pam Deyo and husband Steve of Orofino; ten grandchildren, 17 great-grand- children, and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

   He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Jesse, and sisters Geneva, Leara, Lola, and Margritte (Dean).

   A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Sept. 8, 4 p.m. at the Peck Community Hall.

Vernie Ray Sinclair, 51, Weippe

   Vernie Ray Sinclair, 51, of Weippe, passed away Monday, Aug. 27. His memory lives on with his wife Jeri Pennock-Sinclair, family and friends.

   Vernie was born to Wesley and Christine Sinclair in October of 1960 in Orofino.
   He enjoyed spending time outdoors and with his family and friends. He touched the lives of many.

   He is survived by his wife Jeri, sisters and their families, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

   A Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, Sept. 1. He will be greatly missed.

Vernie Ray Sinclair, 51, Weippe

   Vernie Ray Sinclair, 51, of Weippe died Monday, Aug. 27, 2012 in a logging accident near Kooskia. A Celebration of Life and potluck will be held Saturday, Sept. 1 at 2 p.m. at the Browns Creek Family home in Weippe. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in care of arrangements.

Thaice N. Lange, 84, Orofino

   Thaice Nadine Lange passed away Aug. 25, 2012 at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene, ID of complications of congestive heart failure. She was 84. She was born July 18, 1928, the youngest of 10 children to Henry and Francis Pulliam Corder in Cedarvale, KS. As a young child the family moved to Orofino. She attended schools in Orofino, graduating in 1946.

   Thaice worked as a flunky in the PFI logging camps where she met Fred Howell. They later married and had three children, Linda, Eddie, and Patty. She was widowed at a young age. She married Burl Lange in 1961 and gained a bonus son, Jerry Lange. Burl preceded Thaice in death in 2004.

   She loved baking cookies for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and she especially enjoyed watching the great-grandchildren’s baseball and football games and attending family gatherings. She was an avid Mariners baseball fan. Playing bingo was also one of her favorite pastimes.

   Survivors include her four children, Jerry and Linda Lange of Weippe; Linda and Steve Ouhl of Clarkston; Eddie and Karen Howell of Orofino; and Patty and Dean Umphenour of Orofino; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, nine brothers and sisters, husbands Fred Howell and Burl Lange, and two grandsons.

   There will be a graveside service at Lewis Clark Memorial Gardens on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 11 a.m. There will be a dinner following the service at the VFW Hall, 330 Michigan Ave., Orofino at 2 p.m. If you can’t attend the service, please come to the dinner. We would love to see all of you.

Dolores Jasper, 90, Orofino

   Dolores (Rusty) Marie Jasper passed away Sunday, August 26, 2012 in Orofino at the age of 90.

   She was born Dolores Marie Lauer on Nov. 12, 1921 on a small dairy farm in the village of Shiocton, Wisconsin, near Green Bay. She was one of six children born to William and Mary Lauer.

   After graduating from high school, Dolores studied nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital and Nursing School in Green Bay. With World War II on, upon graduating from nursing school as a registered nurse, she enlisted in the United States Army Nurse Corps, later commissioned as a Captain.

   She met her future husband and lifelong love, Morris (Gene) Eugene Jasper, in New York City, while both were waiting to be shipped to the European theater of the war. They both sailed together to England aboard the RMS Queen Elizabeth, the superliner of the Cunard line that had been converted into a troop ship.

   Gene Jasper was a 1st Lieutenant in the 82^nd Airborne and served throughout France, Holland, Belgium and Germany, including the Battle of the Bulge. After the war Rusty attended art school in Denver, Colorado, while Gene attended business school there. They married in 1947 and lived briefly in Illinois and Wisconsin before moving west to Spokane, Washington, in 1952.

   As their family grew to eleven children, Rusty worked on and off as an RN at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, while Gene worked for Consolidated Freightways. In 1963, they moved to Orofino, where Gene worked for Star Motor Freight, and Riverside Water District, and Rusty worked, periodically, as an RN at Clearwater Valley Hospital and was a fulltime mom and then grandma.

   She is survived by her brother, Donald Lauer of San Antonio, Texas and eleven children: Mary Lee Montgomery of Spokane; Cindy Ponozzo of Orofino; Judy Fuller of Orofino; Bill Jasper of Coeur d’Alene; Jenne Byrne of Arrow Junction, ID; Bob Jasper of Lewiston, Jon Jasper of Lewiston, Jerry Jasper of Bonney Lake, WA; Lorri Bertin of Altadena, CA; Tom Jasper of Orofino; and Tim Jasper of Walla Walla, WA. She is survived also by thirty grandchildren, twelve great-grand children and many nieces and nephews.

   The rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30 at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino. The Latin Tridentine Requiem Mass will be celebrated by Father Michael Irwin of Coeur d’Alene at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church (Kalaspo Ave. & C St.) in Orofino on Friday at 10 a.m., followed by graveside service and burial at Riverside Cemetery in Orofino. A reception will follow at the Orofino City Park.

Iva Mae Unruh, 87, Greer

   Iva Mae Unruh, 87, of Greer passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at Clearwater Health and Rehab in Orofino. After a short illness she left us with peace and grace, just as she lived. Iva was born on May 20, 1925 in Shelby, MI to Sylvia and Grover Unruh.

   When Iva was 10 years old the family of seven migrated west, eventually to settle in Marysville, WA. Her father worked at different jobs and soon found a position as custodian at a large recreation park near Marysville. The family all worked and played hard there for several years with extended family visiting with them at intervals.

   When Iva finished her schooling she worked at different jobs in the area.

   In December 1956 she arrived in Orofino in search of work. Someone in town suggested that she might get on at the Arcadian Nursing Home in Greer. So she caught the bus to Greer and talked with Mrs. Whitney, the owner, who told her that “there are many jobs in a nursing home”. So they decided that Iva would stay overnight and look the situation over. Well, she stayed three nights and then announced that she would like to work in the laundry. She worked with a grateful heart in the laundry, in the kitchen, upstairs and downstairs, in the garden and in the canning room. In the early 60’s the Whitneys sold the nursing home because of their failing health. By this time Iva had become an important member of the Whitney, Bird, and Goodwin families. When the Whitneys moved home Iva became a member of their household. She had kitties and dogs and one “Dolly Doxie” was her close buddy for 13 years.

   Iva helped take care of Mrs. Whitney during her last years and when she passed in 1968, she did the same for Mr. Whitney until he passed 10 years later. And so it became time for Iva’s adopted families, the Birds and Goodwins, to do the same for Miss Iva and she lived happily ever after.

   She loved Dr. Peterson, her personal Avon shopper, Lyn, and her caregiver of late years, Gwen Anicker, her special Bunco friends, the staff at Clearwater Valley Hospital and Clearwater Health and Rehab.

   Iva loved animals and memorials on her behalf would be welcomed at the Clearwater Humane Society, P.O. Box 2063, Orofino ID 83544.

   There will be a farewell celebration in her honor on Friday, Aug. 31 at 1 p.m. in the family room at Brookside Landing. Please use the East entry. Take the elevator to the second floor and turn left.

Alois (Al) Joseph Kaufmann, 87, of Orofino

   Alois (Al) Joseph Kaufmann of Orofino, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012 at home, four days before his 88th birthday.

   Al was born in Beaverton, OR, Aug. 26, 1924 to Gus and Anna Kaufmann. He spent the first 62 years of his life in the Beaverton-Hillsboro, OR, area. He completed grade school at St. Mary’s Catholic School for Boys in Beaverton. He did not attend high school as planned because his father became ill and he worked to assist with the family chicken/egg farm.

   He worked as a truck driver all of his life, beginning with the Farmers Co-op in Hillsboro and retiring from Terminal Flour Mill in Portland. He enlisted in the Navy, May, 1943 and served in the Pacific on the USS Cimarron, an oil tanker until his discharge 1946.

   He married Margaret McMahan, Oct. 24, 1946, in Portland. Together they raised six children in Hillsboro. Margaret passed away Oct. 26, 1982.

   He married Ethel Waibel Hunter on Sept. 1, 1984 and his family increased with the addition of her two sons.

   Al retired at that time and moved to Orofino when he spent many hours hunting and fishing. He was an excellent gardener and there was always plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit for anyone who came by.

   He was active in St. Theresa’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He volunteered many hours at the church and was always ready to work at the annual parish fundraiser “doughboy booth” at the Clearwater County Fair.

   Al is survived by: Ethel, his wife of 28 years; his six children: MaryAnn (Joe) Munda, Stephen (Diane) Kaufmann, Betty Jo (Norm) Van Dyke, Jean (John) Clason, Mark (Lisa) Kaufmann, Phillip (Jody) Kaufmann; stepsons: Dan (Kristi) Hunter and Keith Hunter and special friend Diane; as well as 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Kaufmann, sisters Agnes Keel and JoAnn Westwell.

   He was preceded in death by his brother, David Kaufmann, sisters, Alice Kaufmann and Sister Jane Frances Kaufmann, SSMO and his grandson, Brian Thomas.

   Services will be at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Hillsboro, OR, on Friday, Aug. 31, 2012. Rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. followed by funeral mass at 11 a.m. Burial will be at St. Matthew’s Cemetery. A memorial mass will be celebrated in Orofino at a later date.

Charles W. Brooks, 73, Peck

   Charles W. Brooks, 73, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012 at his home in Peck surrounded by his family. He was born on June 7, 1939 in Hartford, CT to Mamie and George Thurber and grew up in Barr, VT. He served four years as a Crew Chief in the United States Air Force stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, NV where he received an Honorable Discharge.

   Charley retired from the City of Peck where he worked as the maintenance man and also as a relief mail truck driver for Al Humphrey in July 2012. He loved to spend time with his friends just telling stories over a beer or two. Charley had a great sense of humor and could always make us laugh even at the worst of times. He loved to fish and enjoyed his hunting camp, mostly just to be with his good friends and cut wood. Charley always had time to stop and help whether he knew you or not. If you needed help he would always be there.

   Charley is preceded in death by his parents, George and Maime Thurber; and his daughter Teri L. Daniel. He is survived by his wife, Amber Brooks at their home in Peck; his sisters Audrey Fisher, Barbara Busch, and Hillary Filios; and his cousin Judith Chapman. He is also survived by his eight daughters that were his pride and joy: Valerie K. and Brady Breest; Toni L. and Gary Potts; Carolyn R. and Skip Childress; Audrey M. and Mike Allen, Barbara A. Brooks, Cynthia A. Brooks, Sherri K. Brooks and Tammy L. and Paul Szukala; a stepson Karl and Robin Beard; and countless grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all who love and will miss him deeply.

   A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, Aug. 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Peck Community Building. The Peck Community Club will provide sandwich fixings, rolls, salads, fruit and drinks to go along with a potluck dinner. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peck Community Ladies Club or Big Canyon 4-H.

Harold Dean Tinsley, 81, Longview, TX

   Harold Dean Tinsley of Longview, TX, passed away Aug. 15, 2012. He was 81. Harold was born Feb. 1, 1931, in Jacksonville, TX, to Leo Melvin Tinsley and Lena Pearl (Hight) Tinsley.

   He was raised in Jacksonville, where he attended school and worked on the family tomato farm.  It was in Jacksonville that he met his wife to be, Betty June Sherman.  The couple eloped, and was married on Valentines Day 1949.  The marriage lasted more than 60 years.

   Harold and Betty moved to Dallas in 1950 for work and to begin a family.  He found work in the upholstery industry.  In 1950, the couple had their first of four children, a daughter, Jo Elaine. In 1953, a second daughter, Carol Jean, was born, and in 1954, their only son, Michael Dean, was born.

   The couple moved to Longview in 1957, where Harold teamed up with Buddy Clark in an automobile glass/upholstery shop. In 1959, Harold opened his own upholstery shop on North Second Street, and the couple had their final child, Melissa Rose.

   Harold was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. It was on a hunting trip to Idaho that Harold found a business opportunity that led him to sell his business in Longview and move to Orofino, ID, in 1973.

   He began a career in machinery contracting to logging sites, which kept him in his beloved mountains of Idaho until the declining health of his parents forced them to move back to Texas in 1979. He then opened and worked in several upholstery shops until his retirement.

   Harold is survived by a sister, Marjorie McKnight of Recklaw, TX; two daughters, Jo Jordan and husband, Jack, of Lake Cypress Springs, TX, and Lisa Porterfield and husband, Jody, of Tyler, TX; a son, Mike Tinsley and his wife, Lynn, of Spokane, WA; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

   He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Pearl Tinsley; his wife, Betty; a daughter, Carol Jean; and a sister, Nelda Costlow.

   The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Heart to Heart Hospice.

   A memorial service will be at a later date.

Richard Louis Hughes, Sr.

   Richard Louis Hughes, Sr. of Orofino passed away Aug. 24, 2012 at his residence. He was 73 years old.

Clifford Brazeau, 78, Orofino

   “Luke” Clifford Leo Brazeau died early Sunday morning on August 19, 2012 at the Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino of respiratory failure. He was 78.

   Luke was born on Sept. 5, 1933 to Leo and Georgette Brazeau in St. Maries. Luke loved life, the Lord Jesus, his wife Lynda, his children, family, and friends.

   Luke is survived by his wife, six children, 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and one younger sister.

   Luke was preceded in death by his father, mother, and older sister.

   A viewing will be held at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel on Saturday, August 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. A graveside service will follow at Fraser Cemetery, located on Hwy. 11 between Greer and Weippe.

   There will be a “Share your Favorite Memory” potluck at the Peck Community Center in Peck immediately following the service. Casual dress please.

Patricia Ann Lyons, 80, Peck

   Patricia Ann Lyons, of Peck, ID, passed away peacefully from natural causes at St. Joseph Medical Center Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, with her three children by her side.

   Our mother, sister and friend Patricia Ann Patterson was born at White Hospital in Lewiston on Sept. 10, 1931, to Cleo H. and Anna C. Patterson. Cleo and Anna had just moved from Wallace, ID, to the Salmon River months before Mom was born.

   In April 1936, they moved up into the mountain country of the Salmon River to Czizek (Golden Anchor), ID, where Cleo worked as a hard rock gold miner.  Mom’s most fond memories were of being snowbound and having to ski everywhere they went in the winter, not getting out of the mountains until late springtime, and she loved it! A lifetime passion for snow sports was born of this.

   Mom began her schooling at the Golden Anchor, School District #32, in 1937 with 13 total students the first year. The Patterson family left the Anchor in April 1942 when the gold mine was closed down. Another mine had opened on the South Fork of the Salmon River so the Patterson’s moved from the Golden Anchor, 43 miles over the mountain to Stibnite with many other friends and their families, all of whom Mom kept in contact with throughout the years.  Mom also attended school there and was excited to have full time electricity, a recreation center, a post office, pre-fab houses and a fully-staffed hospital. 

   Brother Daniel Loren was born November 1942; by May 1946, the family had moved once again to Riggins, ID. She said she was mortified that electricity and indoor plumbing were not standard in Riggins, something a 15 year girl would miss after becoming accustomed to it in the mining communities!

   Brother Cleo Ernest Patterson was born October 1946, with brother Larry Michael coming along in March of 1954. Mom completed her junior year of school in 1948, at Riggins, the extent of her formal training. Her natural people skills and business sense more than made up for her senior year!

   Mom loved to camp, fish and hunt; if not for her summer road trips her kids would never have had the opportunity to sample every National Park and Monument in the west. She taught us to be adventurous and independent. She loved her birds and wildlife, except when they damaged her garden or bright flower gardens which she carefully tended to until poor health forced her to slow down. Family was her number one priority and she along with her brothers, organized family gatherings at least once a year.

   In the 1960’s and ‘70’s she would take her mother and grandmother up to the mountains above Riggins and spend the day picking huckleberries and visiting; later she shared her love of huckleberries with kids and grandkids.

   Mom worked for various municipalities, including the Riggins Water District from 1958-1973; the Riggins Chamber of Commerce from 1973-1975; the Dept. of Labor Job Service in Orofino from 1977 until retirement in 1993 to take care of her husband; the Clearwater County Court-house as Deputy Clerk from 1994-2003 when she retired to spend time enjoying life.

   Patricia and Darwin W. Smith were married in May 1949, at Payette, ID, and later divorced. Mom married Ralph Ace Barton in August 1956, making their home in Riggins where they raised three children, John, Annette and Adonna; they divorced in 1976.

   Mom married George J. Lyons in 1976, at Couer d’ Alene, ID; in 1977, they moved from Kamiah, ID, to a ranch on the Cavendish Grade near Dworshak Reservoir and they made their home there until George’s death in June 1994; in 1996, she moved to the town of Peck near the Clearwater River.

   Growing up with three younger brothers, Mom missed having a sister and found one in Delores Jensen while attending school in Riggins. The two were inseparable even as poor health moved them farther apart; two hour phone conversations and lots of laughs were common at least once a month.

   Mom loved to dance and attend community events as often as possible. She found a willing partner in Wilbur “Monk” Montgomery of Orofino, and they danced, camped, traveled and enjoyed each other’s company for the last 15 years. At times her brothers would call and ask “Have you seen your teenage mother lately?” when she was off having fun.

   She was a longtime member and officer in the American Legion Auxiliary out of Riggins, and a member of the Red Hats of Kamiah.

   Patricia is survived by her children, John (Arlene) Barton of Peck; Annette Barton (Sandie) of Albion, WA; Adonna (Aaron) Shepherd of Boise, ID; brothers Dan (Barb) of Lewiston; Cleo (Carol) of Oakdale, CA; Mike (Diane) of Ontario, OR; sister-in-law Barb Hardin of Lewiston; seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces and their families which were as important to her as any, including the Lyons family.

   She was preceded in death by her beloved grandparents and parents, recently her 101 year old Aunt Marie, and husband George. When asked what her cause of death was, I have replied “she died from complications of having lived a full and rewarding life”.

   Cremation has taken place and the family suggests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Peck Community Club in Peck, ID or the Kiwanis Club of Orofino, P.O. Box 1317, Orofino, ID 83544, where she rarely missed a fund raiser.

   A celebration of her life will be enjoyed by family in Riggins, ID, later in the summer. Arrangements are with Malcom’s Brower -Wann Funeral Home.

X.E. “Bus” Durant, 90, Lewiston

   X.E. “Bus” Durant passed away Aug. 18, 2012, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. He was born May 11, 1922, in Lewiston, Idaho, to Xavier and Nellie Durant. Bus was raised in Weippe, Idaho, with his sister, Verla, and, as he always referred to him, the “kid” brother, Benny. He and Benny have remained close all these years, including having lunch on Thursdays, usually at Station 3, in Clarkston. Bus and his wife, Mary Ellen, visited Verla and her husband, Paul Ennis, and their children in Boise and Sun Valley many times.

   Bus told great stories about growing up in Weippe and Clearwater County in the 20’s and 30’s, including taking a family car trip to the Chicago World’s Fair in August and September of 1933. He attended Weippe schools through many of those years, although he moved to Lewiston for his senior year and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1940. He attended the University of Idaho, was in the ROTC program, and served in the US Army in Europe during World War II. He was discharged from the 95^th M.P. Battalion in August of 1946, having served primarily in France and Germany. Upon leaving the Army, Bus returned to the University of Idaho and graduated in 1947. His parents had established a general merchandise store in Weippe and one in Pierce. In the late 40’s, Bus bought out his parent’s store in Pierce while Benny took over the store in Weippe.

   Bus married Mary Ellen Ripley in 1949 and they continued to operate Durant’s General Merchandise and Durant’s Grocery for many years. Bus served on the City Council and as Mayor of Pierce including during the Centennial Celebration in 1960, which also was attended by Idaho Gov. Bob Smylie. The event was very successful and is still celebrated annually as Pierce 1860 Days. Bus also was a partner in a cabin located off the Laundry Creek Road, eight miles from the North Fork of the Clearwater River, where he allowed many friends and family members to stay while they hunted and fished. Bus liked to prospect for minerals in that area. 

   Bus and Mary Ellen sold Durant’s General Merchandise in 1978, but Bus didn’t retire. He was elected Clearwater County commissioner and served for 15 years, before retiring and moving to Lewiston in 1993.

   In 1948, Bus set up a trap in Pierce and started a long career of trapshooting. Bus served as president of the Camas Prairie Trap Shooting Association in 1962 and 1967 and was past-president of both the Orofino and Pierce gun clubs. In 1964, he was elected ATA Western Zone vice-president, remaining on the ATA Executive Committee through 1970 while serving four years as vice-president, one year as president of the ATA in 1969, and one year as president ex-officio. In 1975, he was appointed to the Central Handicap Committee and he served as chairman of the Handicap Committee for many years while traveling all over the United States to handicap shooters for ATA-registered events. He was ATA president when the organization’s Hall of Fame was dedicated in 1969, and he was enshrined into the hall on Aug. 15, 1989. Bus won many trapshooting awards and was well-known for the time and effort he devoted to trapshooting and for his willingness to help a fellow trapshooter. He participated in many changes to improve the sport, which benefited trap shooters nationwide. He attended the Grand American Trapshoot, held annually in Vandalia, Ohio, every year from 1962 until 2006, a string of 44 consecutive years and a number he was very proud of. He so wanted to make one more trip to the Grand, but declining health prevented a last trip to his favorite event, which has been moved to Sparta, Ill.

   Bus was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary Ellen, in 2006, and his sister, Verla. He is survived by his brother Benny, of Lewiston, and niece Vickie Smith, of Weippe; his nephew, Scott Ennis, of Cupertino, Calif., and nieces Paula Ennis, of Stowe, Vt., and Lynn Ennis Iozzo, of Gladwyne, Penn.; as well as brother-in-law Herbert S. Ripley and wife Mary, of Lewiston, Idaho; and nephews Mike Ripley, of Lewiston, Idaho, Richard Ripley, of Spokane, Wash., Dan Ripley, of Bellingham, Wash., and Jeff Ripley, of Kennewick, Wash.

   Services for Bus are planned for Monday, August 27 at 11 a.m. at CrossPoint Alliance Church located at 1330 Powers Avenue in the Lewiston Orchards. 

   Memorials can be made to the University of Idaho or Lewis-Clark State College as Bus and Mary Ellen each established education endowments at both institutions.

Anne Rosemarie Veseth, 20, Moscow

   Anne joined her dad in heaven Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, after she died in a wildland firefighting acci-dent in central Idaho.

   Anne was born to Claire and Roger Veseth on April 5, 1992, in Moscow. She attended St. Mary's Ele-mentary School, Moscow Junior High and Moscow High School. She was awarded Junior Miss second runner-up in 2009, due partly to her extra-ordinary break-dancing talents.

   She attended Lewis-Clark State College, where she graduated in May 2012 with her associate's degree in auto mechanics and had planned to pursue her bachelor's degree. Anne had worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a firefighter for two seasons on the North Fork Ranger District.

   She rode horses and played basketball through high school. She also enjoyed being outside and working with her hands. Anne loved making other people happy and was always the first to laugh at herself. She loved a challenge, whether it was hard manual labor, a workout at the gym or a car's mechanical problem. In her spare time she would work on her truck, listen to country music, go for hikes and drive back-country roads.

   She is survived by her mother, Claire, and siblings Rachel Tiegs, Brian and Julia. She was preceded in death by her father, Roger. Anne was and will always be deeply loved by her family and friends; her death leaves an immense hole in our hearts. Anne had a positive impact on everyone who met her; she will be greatly missed.

   A rosary for Anne took place Aug. 17 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moscow. The service was Aug. 18 at Moscow Church of The Nazarene.

Richard Lindgren, 83, Vancouver, WA

   Richard (Dick) Allen Lindgren, of Vancouver, WA, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2012. He was 83.

   Dick was born in Orofino on July 14, 1929, and raised there. He graduated from Orofino High School and continued on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree from Northern Idaho College of Education, now known as Lewis-Clark State College.

   Later Dick earned his Masters at the University of Idaho. Following college he served in the Intelligence Division of the U.S. Army in occupied Europe.

   Dick worked as a teacher and a coach, starting his career in Nezperce, followed by 20 years in the Klamath Falls school system in Oregon. He had many hobbies or “projects,” but his real interests were his family, the kids that he taught or coached and the many wonderful people that he came into contact with during his career.

   Richard is survived by his children, Karin and Steve Dawson, Mark and Staci Lindgren, Rob and Kate Hinchee, Mark and Mary Anne Hinchee and Dan and Terri Hinchee. He was a wonderful grandfather to 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his dearly beloved wife, Miriam.

Eva Jeanette Allen, 85, Lewiston

   Eva Jeanette Allen of Lewiston (and formerly of Pierce) passed away Tuesday Aug. 7, 2012 at Wedgewood Terrace after a brief, serious illness.

   She was the middle child born on Sept. 9, 1926 to Robert G. and Esther H. Dinnison at the family farm in Weippe. She attended Weippe Grammar School and Pierce High School graduating in 1944.

   Jeanette joined the Nurses' Cadet Corp at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane and received her RN diploma in 1947. She worked in Washington, DC, Albuquerque, NM and Clarkston hospitals before marrying Claude Schrempp and moving to Palo Alto, CA. She continued nursing here, then Richland, WA, Grand Coulee and Rockwood Clinic as a nurse.

   This marriage brought forth her children, Claudia and Robert. She and Claude returned to Piece in 1956 and owned and operated the Pierce Market. This marriage ended in divorce. She returned to nursing at Clearwater Valley Hospital and worked at Jaype Mill until marrying Robert L. Allen in Pierce. They moved to a parcel of her parents' Weippe homestead in 1978 and remained there until 2007 when health issues brought them to Lewiston.

   Jeanette was a hard worker, starting as a teenager delivering milk to Pierce residents before school and her work ethic continued until health issues slowed her. One of her last words was “please clean this room up!” She and Bob were good community people – always there to help with any project.

   She missed her Pierce and Weippe friends dearly after moving to Lewiston. Her main interests were family and her home – inside and out. She liked skiing, swimming, wood shop and keeping a well groomed yard.

   Jeanette is survived by her husband, Bob; daughter, Claudia Schrempp Decker; son, Robert (Anne) Schrempp; stepdaughter, Becky Brotnov (Terry Jackson); stepson, Sam (Chris) Allen; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; little sister, Mildred Ann Musselman and nephews, Dan (Shelley) Musselman and Jerry (Patricia) Musselman and several great nephews and nieces.

   She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Roberta Gibbar; brothers-in-law, Francis Gibbar and Leo Musselman and nephew and niece, Richard and Connie Gibbar.

   Per Jeanette's request, cremation has taken place and that she wanted no service and no tears! Her ashes are to be buried in the Weippe Cemetery by her family at a later date.

Irene Lynch, 93, North Bend, WA

   Irene Lynch died Aug. 3, 2012 near North Bend, Washington, where she had been residing with her son Monte Lynch and his family.

   She was born in Gilbert, Idaho to Leonard F. Tull, and Emily Hutchinson Tull on Oct. 28, 1918. She attended schools in Camas, WA and the Eugene, OR area until the family moved back to Orofino in 1930.

   A child of the Depression, she worked to pay for her education and graduated as Valedictorian from Orofino High School in 1937. She married Charles (Bud) Lynch on March 1, 1937 and they raised five children in a pioneer setting on the family homestead.

   Her children grew up with the smell of her county fair blue ribbon bread filling the house as she taught them to cook, sew, garden, milk cows, and dream. She bought encyclopedias, the Children’s Classics, and National Geographic so they could see the world. She loved cooking for lots of people and giving bread to friends and family. She made their home a sanctuary for Western Bluebirds.

   She was always willing to undertake a new adventure from a simple picnic at Aquarius to hiking over the Arizona desert at night in search of Halley’s Comet.

   A tenacious cancer survivor, she was also a poet and an ardent reader of science, history, and literature, a lover of music and the natural world. She was a feminist who taught herself to drive and, to the everlasting pride of her husband, made a career with the Corps of Engineers at the Dworshak Project, Bonneville 2nd Powerhouse, Little Goose, Walla Walla District Personnel Office.

After she retired in 1983, she and her husband returned home to Orofino. Following his death in 1988 she stayed on Wells Bench until 2004, when she moved to North Bend, Washington.

   She was predeceased by her husband, parents, brothers Leonard Tull, Donald Tull, Fred Tull, and her sister, Annie Watson. She is survived by her sister Carolyn Cuddy; daughters Jill Lynch and Bette (and Dean) Husted; and sons Monte (and Kitty) Lynch, Tom Lynch and John Lynch. She is also survived by her granddaughters Destiny Lynch, Angela Lynch, and grandsons Josh (and Cecelia) Husted, Aaron, Jacob and Jared Lynch. She loved many nieces and nephews.

   A celebration of her life will be held at the Orofino Senior Center on Sept. 1, at 5 p.m.

Linda Sue Day, 65, Lewiston

   Our loving mother, Linda Sue Day of Lewiston, Idaho passed away Thursday July 19, 2012 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center at the age of 65.  Linda was born December 8, 1946 at Orofino to parents Paul James Wyatt and Mary Ruth Farence of Weippe. 

   Linda spent her early years at the family ranch located on what is now Wyatt Road outside of Weippe.  She attended school in Weippe and graduated from Weippe High School in 1965.

   Upon her graduation she married Darell Chenault and they moved to Edwards Air Force Base in California outside of Rosemond. 

   In 1968 her first son, David Ray Chenault, was born at Edwards Base Hospital. 

   Linda and Darell later divorced, and Linda stayed in California later meeting and marrying Joe Rodarte. 

   In 1980 Linda and Joe divorced and Linda moved back to the Weippe area.  She went to work for the Community Action Agency.

   In 1983 she married Robert (Bob) Allen Day.  In 1984 her second son James Allen Day was born, and in 1985 she was blessed with her third son Brandon Lee Day. 

   Linda and Bob moved to Lewiston in 1988, and in 1989 they settled at their longtime home on Warner Avenue in the Orchards.  Linda left Community Action and for a year she and Bob headed a house for abused and abandoned children in Idaho Falls.

   When she returned to northern Idaho, Linda went back into the food service industry, managing the kitchens at Farmhouse Fraternity at the University of Idaho, and Sigma Kappa Sorority at Washington State University.  After several years of commuting to the universities, she took over as Food Service Manager at Northwest Children's Home in Lewiston.  She retired from the children's home in 2002, and she and Bob managed the campground at Myrtle on the Clearwater river until they both retired for good in 2006.

   They enjoyed their retirement until Robert's death in November 2010, and Linda resided at the family home on Warner battling various ailments until her passing. 

   Linda was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Mary Ruth Wyatt of Weippe; husband Robert Allen Day of Lewiston; sister Ilo Larson of Lewiston. 

   She is survived by, sisters Jean Stacy and her husband Elwood of Weippe; Sharon Miles and her husband Grant of Weippe; sons David Ray Chenault and his wife Alane of Lewiston; James Allen Day and Brandon Lee Day of Poulsbo WA; grandsons Mitchell Ray, Cody Alan, and Braeden Dealney Chenault of Lewiston; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

   Our family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center for the amazing care and support they have delivered to Linda over the past several years.

Barbara Wityczak, 64, Orofino

   Barbara Jean Wityczak passed away in her Orofino home with her family beside her on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012. She was 64.

   Barbara was born on May 7, 1948 in Los Angeles, CA to Christopher and Frances V. (Matetich) Brennan.

   She graduated from Reading Senior High School in Reading, Pennsylvania class of 1966.

   Barbara married Frank Michael Wityczak in May of 1971 in Reading, PA.

   She worked for Teleflex International in Limerick, PA from 1969 to 1996, where she then moved to their current home just outside of Orofino. There she worked at Community Action Partnership from 2005 to 2010.

   Barbara was a devoted member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church since moving to Idaho; she also was a board member of the Clearwater Youth Alliance, CSAW, the Orofino Teen Center, and the Orofino Drop-In Center.

   Barbara also ran Maniac Productions and was a founding member of the Orofino Teen Center. 

   Barbara leaves behind her husband, Frank Wityczak, of Orofino; her sons Jesse Wityczak of Astoria, OR and Joseph Wityczak of Moscow; her sisters: Lynn Hinsey and Joan Hoyen of West Reading, PA; Jean Brennan of Morgantown, PA; and Christina Cubbitt of Virginia Beach, VA; and two brothers, Daniel Brennan of Hamburg, PA and David Brennan of Reading, PA.

   Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Christopher and Frances Brennan.

   A Celebration of Life was held Aug. 8 at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino.

Gordon R. Hueth, 85, Weippe

   Gordon Ralph Hueth was born on May 19, 1927 in Hellgate Missoula, MT, to Emil Hueth and Hattie (Stephan) Hueth Miles. He passed away on Friday, July 27, 2012, at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino, due to heart related complications.

   He married Mary Alice (Wilson) Hueth on Sept. 12, 1947 in Weippe, ID. They celebrated their 64^th anniversary on Sept. 12, 2011. The couple had four children, Craig Hueth, David Hueth, Tammy (Hueth) Trieb and Kristy (Hueth) SinClair.

   Gordon attended school in Coalridge, MT, Weippe, and Canby, OR; graduating from the eighth grade in Weippe. In 1945, at age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

   Once enlisted in the U.S. Navy, he was placed in the Seabees (construction battalion) and sent to Nagasaki, Japan after the atomic bomb to help with clean up.

   He also worked at various times during his life for Hutchins Brothers Lumber Company, Kenny Weller Logging, and Beck Logging, drove the school and activity bus for the Weippe High School, and owned and operated several service stations. In 1969, Gordon was the janitor and bus driver for the new Timberline High School.

   Gordon lived a very busy life, loved spending time with family and friends, and enjoyed being involved in the community. He was a key person in creating the Weippe Rodeo and the Weippe Rural Fire Department. He grew a huge garden and during the local competitions, at the Lucky Inn, he always hoped to have biggest the rutabaga, potato, or cabbage.

   He and his brothers loved to pull pranks on each other and joke with family and friends. At one point in his life, he worked three jobs at once: logging, running a service station, and a cattle rancher. But he always made sure he made enough time for his family and friends.

   Some of his hobbies included hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, skiing, roller skating, and ice skating. He enjoyed being able to teach his children, grandchildren, nephews and anyone else who wanted to learn how to hunt. Hunting camp was a special time throughout his life and he had several friends that came all the way from California to go hunting with him.

   Gordon was a happy person who always had a smile and a big bear hug for everyone. He always thought of others and how he could help them. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many people.

   Gordon is survived by his wife, Mary Alice (Wilson) Hueth; his sons, Craig Hueth of Silver Springs, NV, and David and Joann Hueth of Lewiston, ID; his daughters, Tamara (Hueth) Trieb of Weippe, and Kristy and Buddy SinClair of Browning, MT; 13 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; his sister, Margaret (Hueth) Rathmann of Fort Madison, Iowa; and numerous others, nieces, nephews, and friends.

   Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Emil Hueth and Hattie (Stephan) Hueth Miles; stepfather Dale Miles; his brothers and sisters, Carl and Winnie (Morehouse) Hueth, Emil (Butch) and Elsie (Sanders) Hueth, and Arthur (Art) and Lillian (Chapman) Hueth, Esther (Hueth) and Robert Young, Emma (Hueth) and Elis Kropf, Marie May (Hueth) and Lloyd White, Emil (Speed) Rathmann.

   A memorial service was held Aug. 5 at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Weippe. After the service a potluck was held at the Rebekah Lodge (IOOF Hall) in Weippe.

Margaret Dugger, 83, Orofino

   Margaret Dugger, a wonderful woman who loved deeply, cared greatly and laughed often, has reunited with Jim Dugger, her best friend and soul mate, in eternity.

   She passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012 at Clearwater Valley Hospital of heart-related complications at the age of 83.

   Margaret was born Nov. 13, 1928 in Morrowtown, ID, to Everett and Lucy Leachman.

   Margaret attended school in Morrowtown, Forest and Winchester where she met her loving husband, Jim Dugger. They were married on March 5, 1945 and resided in Forest, Grangeville and Nezperce.  They eventually moved to Orofino in 1962.

   Margaret was a nurturing and very loving mother of three children, grandmother of seven and great grandmother of four.

   She had an unwavering commitment to her family and her faith and was always willing to assume the role of caretaker, mentor and confidante to friends, relatives and to others in need. She actively participated in activities for various civic and charitable organizations. She was extremely creative and could provide solutions to almost any obstacle. She demonstrated this creativity in her love of painting, gardening, sewing, crafts and restoring antiques. She was an active member of the Orofino Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

   Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, James Dugger, parents, Everett and Lucy Leachman, and brothers Dale, Clifford, and Ed Leachman.

   She is survived by Michael Dugger of Orofino, Donna Peters of Bloomington Il, Clayton Dugger of Freeman Creek, sisters, Linda Oversby of Chewella, Leta Weidner of Post Falls, and brother Harvey Leachman of Craigmont.

   Services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Orofino.

   She will be missed greatly by her family and by those whose lives she touched. May she rest in peace and love forever.

   Patricia A. Lyons, 80, of Peck, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Arrangements are pending with Malcom’s Brower-Wann Funeral Home.

Rodney Charles Jared, 63

   Rodney Charles Jared, 63, left this world to live with the Angels in Heaven on July 24, 2012 from cardiac and respiratory failure. Rod was born in Orofino to John E. and Virginia M. Jared of Weippe, on Feb. 13, 1949. Rod grew up in Weippe and graduated from Weippe High School in 1968.

   While in Idaho he worked as a logger for Finke Logging. In 1990 he moved to Bucky, WA and went to work in logging and insurance sales. He earned a degree in welding from Renton Vo-tech and started to work for Todd’s Shipyards in Seattle. He worked there until he retired.

   Rod loved sports and played baseball and football while in school. He loved to fish, hunt, and collect gems. He won his first turkey shoot at age nine. He won many awards in archery including the Robin Hood award. He loved taking his kids fishing and watching the smiles on their faces when they hauled in “a big one”.

   He always knew where the best fishing spots were. Recently, he and Yvonne spent time in Idaho camping and panning for gold. They did not get rich but they loved spending time in the mountains and with family.

   Rod is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Yvonne Hopkins-Jared, and two children from his first marriage. His children are: daughter Shannon and Jerry Niland of Clarkston, WA and her girls Lacey, Brittany and Mary; and son Travis Jared of Weippe and his son Dillin.

   He is also survived by two brothers Buck and Gloria Jared; and Bill Jared and girlfriend Michelle all of Weippe; and two sisters Janine and Ron Mattoon of Seattle; and Jonna and Dan Kubal of Kooskia; also many nieces and nephews.

   He was preceded in death by his grandson Jordan, his parents, and his grandparents Ora and Zerna Price and Emmett and Esther Jared. Rod requested that he be cremated and his ashes be spread over Elk Mountain.

Donald W. Starr, 68, Pierce

   Donald Starr, a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away, Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012. He died of heart failure at the age of 68.

   Don was born February 1, 1944 at the top of the Greer Hill in a model A car to John and Bonnie Starr. He attended first through 12th grades at Pierce Schools, graduating in 1962.

   He worked at Cardiff Mill, St. Regis Plywood Mill in Libby, MT, for about eight months, and 33 years at Potlatch Jaype Plywood Mill, where he retired.

   Don was very interested in gold prospecting, reading, studying history, and taking hikes with his dog, Snoopy. He liked huckleberry picking and giving pieces of pie to almost everyone he met.

   On March 20, 1970, he married Janet Aileen Fisher, and she survives at the family home.

   Don was preceded in death by his mom and dad, and his daughter, Gina Lynn Starr Barber. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth.

   He is survived by his wife of 42 years, his son, Daniel Marc Starr (wife Amy) and granddaughter, Evelyn, granddaughter, Angel Lynn Starr and grandson, Dan Raymond, and by his great granddaughter, Alexis Lynn Marie Martin. Also he is survived by his brother, Darrel Starr of Orofino, and sister, Marlene Trammell of Lewiston, as well as numerous aunts and cousins.

   A memorial service will be held Monday, Aug. 13, 2012, at 6 p.m. at the Pierce Play Park across from the Pierce Community Center.

   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Timberline Schools, Pierce Free Public Library, or the Pierce Community Center.

Irene Lynch, 93, North Bend, WA

   Irene Lynch, 93, of North Bend, WA passed away on Aug. 3, 2012. She was born in Orofino. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Linda Vannie Easom, 54

   Linda Vannie Easom, 54, passed away Aug, 2, 2012, after fighting a courageous battle against cancer.

   She was born in Lewiston, ID, on Sept, 2, 1957 to Charlie and Maxine Matthews.

   Linda graduated from Timberline High School in 1975.  She met Charles "Pokey" Easom and married in 1980. They had three children:  Debra of Clarkston, WA, Lindsey of Canon City, CO, and Jamie of Weippe, ID. Linda lived in Weippe most of her life except when they moved to Rowan Bay, AK, in the summer of 1988 and again when they moved to Coffman Cove, AK, in July of 1989 until March of 1997 when they returned home to Weippe. She was a very devoted mother and wife and always put her families needs before her own.

   She worked at Timberline Café as a waitress, and at Durant’s Grocery in Weippe.

   Most of her employment was at the Weippe Elementary School. She truly loved every kid that she worked with over the years and always had a story to tell or was bragging about them. She was loved by all that she worked with and will be greatly missed.

   Linda was a very hard worker and was always busy doing something. She was always cracking jokes and laughing about something. Her biggest joy in life would be her family. She loved to spend time with her grandkids and her children.

   She is survived by her husband, Charles "Pokey”; three children, Debra Easom of Clarkston, WA.; Lindsey Easom of Canyon City CO; and Jamie Easom of Weippe, ID; also, by her three grandchildren, Devon and Blake Wentland of Clarkston, WA; and Jaysie House of Canon City, CO; her mother, Maxine Matthews; brothers, Fred Miller, Wayne, Dave and Tom Matthews, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her extended family Jerry Snyder, Debra Bartlett, Dale, Gerald, Ron and Gary Snyder, and many nieces and nephews.

   She was preceded in death by her father, Charlie Matthews; a bro-ther, Gene Matthews; a sister, Elaine McGlothen and Norman Snyder. 

   The family would like to thank everybody for all of their love and support. Also the Staff at Royal Plaza Care Center in Lewiston, ID, for the loving care they gave to her and them during this difficult time.

   There will be a Celebration of Life for family and friends on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at the Weippe Mini Park at 6 p.m.

James (Jim) Allen Willis, 64, Orofino

   James (Jim) Allen Willis, born March 4, 1948 in Oakland CA to Doris and Harry Willis died suddenly July 28, 2012.

   Jim grew up in Oakland, CA where he was employed by Pacific Gas and Electric. In the 70’s he moved to the foothills of Calaveras County where he continued to work for PG&E as a Water Systems Repairman for 33 years. He wanted to leave the city life and go where he could indulge in his passion for dirt bikes and the outdoors and share it with his wife, Sara Stone, and their children, Blaine and Naomi. When Sara and Jim divorced he continued to live in Hathaway, Pines with his daughter.

   Upon retiring in 2005 he was finding California too crowded and moved to Orofino with his wife, Karen, mom and brother. He joined PLAY; was a life-long member of the American Motorcycle Association; and a member of the International Old-timers Motocross where he still raced.

   Jim loved riding his horses, racing motocross and going trail riding and camping with family and friends. Jim always loved working on bikes and helping kids to not only ride but learn how to repair their own bikes. Moving to Idaho and owning enough property for his horses and growing hay fulfilled his retirement dreams.

   Jim died doing what he loved most-riding dirt bikes with friends on single-track trails in the North Fork area.

   Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Chuck. He is survived by his children Blaine and Naomi Willis of California, wife Karen of Orofino and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

   Jim, you will be sorely missed by many and may you ride your bike forever.

Jerry W. Blanchard, 84, Greer

Gordon Ralph Hueth, 85, Weippe

   Gordon Ralph Hueth of Weippe passed away July 27, 2012 at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino. He was 85 years old.

Leonetta E. Stanton, 89, Kamiah

   Leonetta E. Stanton, 89, of Kamiah, died Friday, July 27, 2012 at St. Mary's Hospital in Cottonwood.

   Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2 at Trenary Funeral Home Chapel in Kooskia.

   Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3 at Kamiah City Cemetery in Kamiah. A covered dish dinner will follow at the American Legion Hall in Kamiah, Idaho.

Daniel (Dan) Sullivan, 88, Lewiston

   Daniel William (Dan) Sullivan, 88, formerly of the Cavendish/Teakean area passed away July 12, 2012 at Life Care Center in Lewiston.

   Dan was born Feb. 20, 1924 to George E. and Hazel (Long) Sullivan on a farm near Washtucna, WA. His father died when Dan was nine. He attended schools in Washtucna, graduating in 1942.

   He was drafted into the Army, serving in the European Theatre from 1943 to 1946. He drove trucks and jeeps in Holland, France, Normandy, Belgium, and Germany, and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. For a time, Dan was one of General George Patton’s drivers.

   Dan married Gladys Wegner Feb. 29, 1948 at Cameron. They farmed at the Barr ranch at Riparia, WA for a short time before moving to Cavendish in 1949. They bought a farm and made it their home for over 60 years.

   He was a member of the Cattleman’s Association, and various farming organizations. He enjoyed being a member of “The Farmers” bowling team. In 1960 several neighbors learned they were about to lose the community park at Cavendish because it was not being maintained, so LeBaron Park, Inc. was established. Dan helped with the logging and clearing of the land, drilling a well, building picnic tables and installing outhouses and fire pits. He served as president for the group for several years.

   In 1967, Dan suffered a heart attack, spending many weeks at Gritman Hospital in Moscow. After his recuperation, he continued to farm and raise cattle. Dan also drove the Cavendish school bus for several years.

   In the early 1970’s he realized his lifelong dream of learning to fly and owning his own Cessna 172, flying around the Northwest for many years. When the plane was sold, they bought a boat and spent restful hours at Dworshak Reservoir.

   Dan was a member of Cameron Emmanuel Lutheran Church near Kendrick. After moving to Lewiston, he and Gladys enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

   He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Audrey Winn and Beulah Blankenship, and brothers George and Bernie Sullivan, and a daughter, Joanne, and her husband Ralph McAllister.

   Survivors include his wife Gladys of Lewiston, daughter Lynda (Bob) Roberts; sons Randy (Durelle) and Dale (Christy) Sullivan; brothers Syd (Janice) and Clark (Carol) Sullivan; eight grandchildren, Kevin (Angie), Eric (Kathy), Col, Stephanie, Jenifer (Jamie), Mark, Dayne, and Clint (Robyn), and six great-grandchildren, Ashtyn, Riley, Blake, Brynn, Jake and Dylan, and many nieces and nephews.

   A memorial service and celebration of Dan’s life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 920 Eighth Avenue, in Lewiston. Jacob Thomas Dixon, 83, Coeur d’Alene

   Jacob Thomas (Tom) Dixon, 83, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, passed away on June 25, 2012. Mr. Dixon was born in Fort Scott, Kansas on April 28, 1929.  He moved from Eldorado, Kansas to Orofino in 1973 with his wife, Judy, and their three children, where he stayed until 1984. After living in several parts of the country, he settled in Coeur d’Alene in 2000.

   Music education for children and adults was his primary career pursuit. While in Orofino, Mr. Dixon was the Music Coordinator for School District #171, where he taught Junior and Senior High School choral groups from 1973-1982.

   Mr. Dixon enjoyed organizing community activities that involved music. He was the Director of Choral Music at the United Methodist Church, he established and directed the Clearwater Choraliers in the mid-1970s, and he coordinated the Community Concert series which endured many years during his tenure in Orofino.

   Mr. Dixon also loved to sing, and he had a wonderful bass voice.  His family will remember him as a kind and gentle soul, a caring and devoted father, grandfather and uncle. He will be dearly missed.

   He is survived by three children, Shann Dixon Kim, Woodinville, Washington, Keith Dixon, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Amy Dixon, Santa Rosa, California, as well as five grandchildren.

Robert Naden Sr., 79, Orofino

1933-2012

   Bob passed away at his home in Orofino on July 18, 2012. He had been suffering from lung cancer. Bob worked construction and logged for many years. For several years Bob and his son ran a cedar picket mill at the family home on Winters Creek.

   He is survived by his three children, Barb Therkelsen of Federal Way, WA, Bob Jr. and wife Tama of Orofino, and Diane Cochrell and husband Jason of Weippe; nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by one nephew, Doug Young and wife Sandy of Federal Way, and his companion, Olive Horrace and her two grandchildren at their home in Orofino.

   He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and his wife, Patricia, of 49 years.

   A memorial service was held at the Orofino Community Church on July 23.

Thomas Munck, 82, Oregon

   Thomas (Tom) Munck, 82, died July 3, 2012 at Anthena, OR. He was born in Orofino on June 26, 1930 to Oscar and Anna Munck.

   I am his sister, Wanda Head. I think he was the best person I ever knew. He was always a good brother. He was smart. He worked hard, and he played with us younger sisters and the neighbor kids. He played on the football team. He always had a job; had a paper route, worked at the Orofino Mercantile, worked with his dad and many more.

   He was class valedictorian when he graduated in 1948. He went to college at Lewiston Normal School and worked at a job at night so he could pay for school.

   He married Doreen Bates and he began teaching high school at Culdesac, then later he was teaching in colleges and finally became a professor. Everybody liked him. At his funeral the church was packed with his friends.

   Tom is survived by his sisters Wanda and Myrna; his wife, Doreen; children Gordon, Martha, Gayle and Gary; many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

   He was preceded in death by his brother, Elvin, and his sister, Anna Lee.

   Tom spent many years in Anthena, OR where he taught school. Then he drove to Pendleton where he taught in college. He was a very good father and brother, husband and friend.

Tracie Alice Lee Morton, 42, Kennewick

   Tracie Alice Lee Morton was born in Orofino, ID on June 2, 1970, to Donald and Lola (Ulmer) Morton. She passed away at home on July 17, 2012 in her sleep.

   Tracie graduated from Timberline High School in Weippe, ID in 1988. She also graduated with a cosmetology diploma from Moscow, ID in 1990.

   She lived in various places from the time she was born including Pierce, ID, Metlakatla, AK, Hermiston, OR, but she settled in Kennewick, WA in 1993.

   While in Kennewick she worked at Celebrity Bowl (Spare Time) until 2000 and worked for Winco Foods where she became a “Deli Diva” from 2000 until the present. Tracie was a very hard worker who had a tremendous work ethic and took a lot of pride in her work. She was the seafood P.I.C. at the time of her death.

   Tracie enjoyed going to Seahawk games, where she was the #1 fan. She also enjoyed concerts, travel, cruises, was a cow collecting maniac, going to the beach, especially Long Beach during the kite festival, skiing, camping and fishing for trout at Wallowa Lake, where she was definitely the Queen of catching fish and driving her new Jeep. But what Tracie loved the most was spending time at home with her family and her basset hounds Ginger and Cinnamon “the spice girls” and kitty, Daisy.

   Last month, she had “the best day of her life” celebrating her birthday and her daughter Sierra’s graduation from Kamiakin High School with numerous family members and friends.

   Tracie was preceded in death by her father, Donald Ray Morton and her life partner’s father, Robert Chester Hickman, who Tracie lovingly referred to as “Pete.”

   She is survived by her mother, Lola Lee Wisdom; brothers, Robert William Morton and wife Melinda and Bobby Wisdom; daughters, Brittany Alice Pointon and Sierra Dawn Morton; stepson, Robert Christopher Hick-man; and life partner, Robert Craig Hickman with whom she met in 1998 and spent the remainder of her life.

   Also Robert’s mother, Margaret Hickman and brothers Gred and Mike; her uncle William (Hap) Ulmer; special friend Greg McDaniel, who has been there for Sierra since birth; nephews Justin and Kodee and niece Heather. She is also survived by numerous friends and family that provided her with so many wonderful memories.

   Tracie could light up a room with her smile and the sparkle in her eyes was unforgettable. Tracie will be missed by so many. May you Rest In Peace and find the tranquility that was so elusive the last few years. We Love You Tracie, So Very, Very Much!

   The family greeted friends at a visitation July 22 at Mueller’s Chapel of the Falls, 314 W. First Ave. in Kennewick.

   Funeral services were held July 23 at South Hills Church on 3700 W. 27th Ave. in Kennewick, with interment following at Riverview Heights Cemetery.

Susan E. Mattson Brown, 51, Orofino

   Sue, 51, of Orofino, passed away July 13, 2012 after a courageous four month battle with cancer. Sue was born Dec. 19, 1960 in Orofino to Jerry and Carolyn Mattson. She graduated from Orofino High School in 1979. On October 30, 1993 she married Lorne Brown and they had their daughter, Danielle Rae Brown in 1994. They later divorced.

   She worked for Coleman Oil in Lewiston, Atkinson Distributing, Tripco, Inc., and Nightforce Optics in Orofino.

   She is survived by her daughter Danielle; her mother Carolyn; her sister Cheri and husband Montie Walker; brother Doug and wife Mary Ann Mattson; brothers Rusty and Mike Mattson; niece Misty Walker and fiancé Jason Habeck and her daughter Allie Chaye. Sue was preceded in death by her father Jerry.

   A celebration of Sue will be Friday, July 20 at the home of Ed and Dawn Lanphier, 199 Debertin Drive/Orofino Golf Course Road, from 5 to 9 p.m. Please bring a covered dish, your own beverages and lawn chairs. In lieu of flowers a college savings account for her daughter has been established at Potlatch No. 1 Federal Credit Union.

   Sue, we love and miss you so very much. You will be in our hearts for a lifetime and forever in our souls.

Betty Smolinski Crutcher, 73, Orofino

   Betty Smolinski Crutcher passed away in her home at the age of 73 on Wednesday, July 11, 2012. She was born June 6, 1939 to Wallace and Bertys Smolinski. She grew up in the Fraser area where she loved to work outside with her dad on the family farm. She attended schools in the area and graduated from Weippe High School in 1957.

   Betty married Robert Pollock in 1958 and moved to Pierce. They had two daughters Susan and Peggy. A lot of the summers were spent at Pine Creek and the Bungalow region in lumberjack camps. This marriage ended in divorce and she moved to Lewiston for a short period of time.

   Betty moved to Orofino and in September of 1966 married James Crutcher. Jim had a daughter, Bonnie and four sons, Jim, Joe, Bill and Don so she became an instant mother to 5 more children. Betty and Jim celebrated 44 years of marriage. She not only worked hard at raising her children, she worked for the lunch program at Orofino Elementary for two years and Orofino High School for six years. While working for the school district Betty learned to make her infamous “cinnamon rolls.”

   In 1978, Jim and Betty purchased the Oasis Bar and, along with his brother Bill, they turned it into “the hottest bar in town.” During the 25 years of ownership, Betty prepared many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for local patrons and friends.

   We will miss our daughter, mom, sister, grandma and aunt. She could brighten up a rainbow and we will always cherish our visits, cookies, phone calls and giggles. Betty never let any dust settle under her and her lovely home was always open. She took great pride in her home and beautiful flower gardens. Her gardens were decorated with yard sale items…she loved a good yard sale so much that she started having her own and made it an annual event. Many local residents came just for her cookies, pies and (yes) her infamous “cinnamon rolls.”

   Betty is survived by her mother, Bertys Smolinski, sister, Shirley Lutes and her husband Keith and brother, Jerry Smolinski and his wife Cheryl. Surviving children are Susan Harris and her husband Bill, Peggy Klamke, Bonnie Buntin and her husband Mark, Joe Crutcher, Bill Crutcher and his wife Jan and Don Pitcher; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

   Preceding her in death were her father, Wallace Smolinski, husband, James Crutcher and son, James Crutcher Jr.

   The family would like to invite everyone to a “Celebration of Life” potluck. Please bring a dish to share and memories of good times and share in the tribute to our daughter, mom, sister, grandma and aunt. The “Celebration of Life” will be held Saturday, July 21, 11 a.m. at the Peck Community Club.

   A memorial service potluck for John Cox, who passed away Nov. 27, 2011, will be held Thursday, Aug. 2 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Fraser Park, outside of Weippe.

Reita May Web Legault, 94, Orofino

   Reita May Webb Legault passed peacefully Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Brookside Landing in Orofino, Idaho. She was 94 years old.

   Reita was born April 21, 1918 in Twin Falls, Idaho to Robert and Doretha (Young) Webb.

   She graduated from Roswell Idaho High School in 1938.

   Reita Webb was married to Richard Legault in Elko, NV in 1938 and later divorced in 1960.

   She stared working as a cook in 1950’s in various restaurants in the Kooskia area. Then in the 1970’s she went to work in a lodge on the Middle Fork of the Salmon Rivers owned by Harrah’s of Reno, NV. It was a very exclusive Lodge catering to numerous celebrities where she cooked for them. Among her favorite memories was cooking for Lawrence Welk (see picture). She then went to work for C-PTPA at Headquarters, Idaho, where she retired after some 20 years.

   She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Doretha Webb; her son, Dick Legault; and sisters Jo Ruka Vina and Fawn Wilson.

   She is survived by her daughter Sally O’Brien of Orofino and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

   At her request there will be no services. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in care of arrangements.

James Lineberry, 79, Pierce

   James O’Neill Lineberry of Pierce, died July 8, 2012 in Orofino. He was born January 22, 1933 in Carroll County, Virginia to Coy C. and Allura Coltrane Lineberry. He is survived at the family home by his loving wife Mary Ann. They were married January 22, 1988.

   Jim’s parents and three of his brothers, Rex, Earl, and Phil, preceded him in death. He is survived by his brothers Linden, Kelly (Lois), and Dallas (Gail) Lineberry. He is also survived by his children Walter, Ruby, Wesley, and Forrest, and stepchildren, Carla, Cindy, William Jody (deceased), Laura, Jean, Sue, Jo Ellen, Rod, Cindra, Scott, Steve, and their families.

   Jim was raised at Hebron, Virginia, graduating from Woodlawn High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Guam as a jet mechanic. Later, he graduated from Danville Automotive College in Virginia with an automotive degree, then received a degree in diesel mechanics from Nashville Auto Diesel College.  He spent many years as a logging contractor in Pierce as a partner in Supak and Lineberry Logging. His hobbies included NASCAR and outdoor activities.

   Graveside services for Jim were held at the Riverside Cemetery in Orofino on July 12. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion, the Howard Bradbury Museum, or Pierce Free Public Library.

Curtis Bonner, formerly of Weippe

   Curtis Austin Bonner, 37, Los Angeles, CA, passed away May 23, 2012, surrounded by his family.

   He was born in Lewiston on March 10, 1975 to the late Emmett and Mary Bonner. In April of 1998, his daughter Maddison Bonner was born.

   Curtis graduated from Timberline High School in Weippe and studied computer programming at Mira Costa College in San Diego, CA.

   He had an industrious mind and started working from a young age, beginning with a paper route and lawn care for the elderly. His later jobs included cafe cook, mill worker, caregiver for patients with disabilities, and accounting.

   Curtis was also a gifted pianist with a passion for music and he enjoyed researching the science of the mind, God and history. His family will remember him as an intuitive, philosophical, intellectual man who made this world a little better because he was here, with a beautiful heart and desire for perfectionism in all that he pursued.

   He was a loving father, devoted son, protective brother and caring uncle.  In his last words to his daughter, he told her,  "Of what little I had in life was always overshadowed by the fact I had you."

   Curtis was preceded in death by his father, Emmett L. Bonner.

   He is survived by his daughter, Maddison Bon-ner of Coeur d' Alene; mother, Mary Bonner of Pierce; brothers, Lee, Martin, Peter, Steven, Cameron, Austin, Guy and Emmett Jr.; and sisters, Lisa Kroupa, Barbi Jared, Billi Cooper, Susan Bonner, Debra Bonner and Jessie Litchfield; and his brotherly friend Luke Kerstetter of San Diego, CA.

   Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Cooks Cemetery in Orofino.

Donna Marie Taggart, 76, Clarkston, WA

   Donna Marie Taggart was born in Mott, ND, July 10, 1935 to Tony and Norma Reichert. She passed away peacefully at home on June 29, 2012.

   She married Mickey Taggart on Oct. 25, 1953 in Bozeman, MT. Mickey and Donna traveled as they followed construction throughout the west coast. They eventually settled in Orofino, ID where Mickey worked for Dworshak National Fish Hatchery, and Donna worked various people-oriented jobs that allowed her to know almost everyone in Orofino. They became snowbirds after retirement to enjoy their favorite past times: camping, fishing and rock hounding. After the death of her husband,

   Donna continued following the snowbirds for six more years. After settling in Clarkston, she traveled with her daughters until the time of her death.

   Survivors include daughters Cathleen Farris, Clarkston, WA; Patti DeAngelis, Portland, OR; grandson Bobby Farris, Clarkston, WA; and sister Kathryn Murphy, Colorado Springs, CO.

   Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Mickey Taggart, and sisters, Ellie Snyder and Jan Fuelling.

   A memorial service was held July 3 at the New Springs Missionary Baptist Church, located at 823 Seventh Avenue in Lewiston, with a potluck held afterwards.

Mary Michele Farrow, 66, Idaho Falls

   Mary “Michele” Farrow, 66, of Idaho Falls, passed away, July 4, 2012 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

   She was born June 23, 1946 in Butte, Montana to James R. French and Margaret Dorothy Fogarty French.

   Michele attended schools in Spokane, WA, and graduated from Orofino High School. She married the love of her life, John “Jack” Farrow on July 24, 1965 in Orofino, ID. They moved to Idaho Falls where together they raised their family.

   She worked as the office manager at Sunset Sports and later at Bonneville Vision Center.

   Michele especially enjoyed being involved in her children’s activities. She was a Little League coach and helped in cub and boy scouts. Michele loved to go camping and fishing with her family and friends. She was interested in area sports especially the Boise State Broncos. Many phone calls to her boys ended in “Go Broncos!!” Michele also loved to read and stay informed of current events.

   Michele was very proud of her family and showed them off any time she could. However, she was a mother to more than just her boys. She had countless people rely on her “motherly” wisdom and often stepped in for anyone who needed her.

   She was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

   Michele is survived by her husband, Jack of Idaho Falls; four  sons, Charles Mark (Monique) Farrow of Boise, ID; Scott Allen (Donna) Farrow of Moscow, ID; Jared Wade (Jodi) Farrow of Boise, ID; and John Aaron (Stacey) Farrow of Idaho Falls, ID; two brothers, Bob (Nancy) Graham of Bellavista, AR; and John G. French, Aurora, CO; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

   She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Bill Graham and a daughter, Dawn Michelle Farrow.

   Funeral services took place July 9 at Wood Funeral Home East Side (963 S. Ammon Rd.). The family visited with friends July 8 at the funeral home. Burial was held at Ammon Cemetery.

Joseph Mehle, 87, Pierce

   Joseph (Joe) L. Mehle, 87, of Pierce, died Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino. A celebration of Joe’s life, including a covered dish dinner, will take place at 1 p.m. Monday at the Pierce Community Center. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel of Orofino is in charge of arrangements.
