Party affiliation required to participate in caucuses, May primary

The next primary election in Clearwater County will be held May 15, 2012. The parties will also be holding caucuses. The caucuses are party functions, operated by private organization (the parties). Party affiliation is required in order to participate in primary elections unless a political party chooses to open its primary to “unaffiliated” voters.  If you fail to select a party, you will automatically be designated as “unaffiliated” pursuant to 34-411, Idaho Code.

“Unaffiliated” means that you do not wish affiliation with any political party.

March 9, 2012, is the last day for an elector currently registered by party to change party affiliation or become “unaffiliated” by filing a signed form with the County Clerk for the Primary Election (May 15) Sec. 34-411A, Idaho Code.

This form is not for voter registration. It is to declare your party affiliation (or lack thereof) so you may participate in the primary election, should it be necessary.

Click here to download a form you may print out and mail to the Clearwater County Auditor’s office.

The following letter to the editor also explains party affiliation requirements.

Dear Editor:

On March 6, Idaho Republicans will be asked participate in the most important presidential primary election in U.S. History. And this year for the first time Idaho's voice will be heard.

Just another quick reminder to those who wish to participate in the Idaho Republican Presidential Caucus coming up March 6.  If you are already a registered voter, you must still affiliate with the Idaho Republican Party before voting in our Republican primary, or the Republican Presidential Caucus. You can stop by the Clearwater County Court Clerk's Office, or go to  http://idgop.org/ and click on Register to Vote Republican Today. That will take you to an Idaho Political Party Affiliation Declaration Form. Fill that form out and return to your county clerk.

Clearwater County will be holding Caucus at Orofino High School Cafeteria, and Timberline High school Cafeteria on March 6.   Doors will open at 5 p.m, Doors close at 7 p.m. If you leave after 7 p.m. you will not re-enter.  We welcome all who would like to participate.
