Robert D. Carlson, 44, Orofino

   Robert (Rob) Carlson, 44, went to join his wife in heaven Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, after a three year battle with cancer. He is now finally resting peacefully.

   Rob was born Jan. 5, 1967, in Ennis, MT to Dwain and Karen Carlson. When he was two and a half the family moved to the Orofino area where Rob grew up, attended school and became a wonderful man. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying camping, hunting, swimming, and riding four wheelers.

   Rob worked several jobs during his lifetime but the last 20 years or so of his life he had worked construction for Paul Pippenger. He loved a challenge and he found that daily in his work.

   Rob was preceded in death by his loving wife Laurie, and his older brother, Terry. He leaves behind his children, Ashley, Jeff, Johnny and David; stepchildren, Avery and Jennifer Dunaway, Shelby Shelton; father, Dwain Carlson of Lewiston; mother and stepfather, Roy and Karen Lucas of Columbia Falls, MT; three brothers, Rick Carlson of Columbia Falls, MT, Mike Carlson and John Haight both of Clarkston; three sisters, Dena Carlson of Clarkston, Jackie LaBlanc of Eureka Ridge, MT and Heidi Freemantle of Australia, sister-in-law, Peggy Haight; nephews, several grandchildren and many friends.

   Rob will be missed greatly. Anybody that knew him, knew he was a real character. He had a great sense of humor and could always make you laugh. We will never forget him as he was loved very much by many.

   Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday with a catered meal to follow. Both will be held at the United Methodist Church, 337 College Avenue, Orofino.

Nancy Lee Andrews, 61, Kooskia

   Nancy Lee (Anderson) Andrews of Kooskia passed away on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011 due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident between McCall and Donnelly. She was 61.

   Nancy was born Aug. 19, 1950 in Franklin to Joseph Merlin and Nina Anderson. She moved from Franklin to Kalispell, MT with her parents as a young girl where she lived with her family until Nancy Graduated from Flathead High School.

   After graduation Nancy moved to Grangeville where she participated in a drama production as part of a youth group. During that time she attended a dance in Lewiston where she met Ronald. After her summer in Grangeville Nancy moved to Rexburg and attended Ricks College (now BYU Idaho) and she and Ron began their courtship through letters and phone calls. The two married in 1969.  

   Throughout her life Nancy could always be found nursing the down trodden. She went back to school and completed her Nursing Degree in 1992 from Boise State University and remained working in the nursing profession until her death.

   She took a two year sabbatical from nursing to serve as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Canary Islands off the Coast of Spain where she showed her commitment to one of her two true loves, her God.

   Nancy’s other love was her family. She always tried to squeeze a little extra time out wherever it could be found to spend nurturing her children or some time for Ron. She was always serving them in the way she felt would best provide for them.

   Nancy is survived by her husband Ronald Leonard Andrews of Kooskia; her seven children, Tifani Lynn (Andrews) Burton of Boise, Damon Ray Andrews of LeGrande OR, Jarred Merlin Andrews of San Antonio TX, Sean Joseph Andrews of Kooskia, Lisa Ruth (Andrews) Deaton of Boise, Cheri Lee (Andrews) Huntsman of Coal Strip MT and Emily Faith (Andrews) Jones of Denver CO; her siblings, brothers Merlin D. Anderson of Orofino, Layne D. Anderson of Sultan, WA, Nyle S. Anderson of Cottonwood, AZ, foster brother Norman Harding of Flathead County, MT; sisters, Nina Kae (Anderson) Laird of Whitefish, MT and Judy (Anderson) Sloan of Polson, MT.

   She was preceded in death by her father Joseph Merlin Anderson and her mother Nina May (Dawson) Anderson.

   The funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday Nov. 19, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Kamiah Ward on Highway 12. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Church prior to the funeral. Interment will be held at Kamiah City Cemetery.

Norman Olson, 49, Orofino

   Norman James Olson, of Orofino, passed away Nov. 9, 2011 after a short battle with lung cancer. He was 49.

   He was born Oct. 1 1962 at Grangeville to Robert and Anita Olson.

   Norman attended Orofino schools and was a logger, truck driver, construction worker and guard rail worker in Oregon.

   He was a quite a jokester and much loved by all his friends. No one was ever a stranger for long.

   Norman is survived by his mother Anita Olson, Orofino; brother, Bill and Nadine Olson; sister Shirley Akerstrom; daughter Tawnya Brink and two nephews Robert and William Akerstrom.

   A memorial potluck will be held Saturday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. at the VFW Building. All are welcome.

Lucas W. Mackey, 31, Spokane, WA

   Lucas Wayne Mackey, 31, son of Stewart and Kathryn Mackey of Orofino, passed away Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011 of unknown causes.

   He is survived by his parents; a sister, Amy Hodges, who lives in Fort Campbell, KY with her husband Sidney and three children Gabriel, Sanoe and AJ; two brothers, Samuel and Benjamin and sister, Katie, who live in Orofino with their parents.

   He is also survived by aunts, uncles and cousins.

   Luke had lived in Orofino off and on for the last 13 years, ever since his father became Pastor of the Orofino Nazarene Church. Luke loved his family and friends and would give of his time and money to help any in need.

   Camping and fishing were a passion for him.  

   Currently he was living in Spokane, WA and working at Crazy G’s.

   Two memorial services are currently planned. One is Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. in Deer Park, WA at the Church of the Nazarene on 3rd and Margaret. The other is service is Saturday, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Orofino Church of the Nazarene, located at 802 Michigan Ave.

   A memorial fund at Wells Fargo has been established in his name.

   Luke was able to spend the last month of his life with family in Spokane and Deer Park, recently celebrating his Grandfather Wayne Mackey’s 88th birthday with friends and family. He also attended church services with his grandmothers.

   We are assured that he is waiting with Jesus until we can all be together.

Linda Marie (Pyles) Berry, 69, Orofino

   Linda Marie (Pyles) Berry passed away Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, following surgery for an aortic aneurysm. She was 69.

   Linda was born June 30, 1942, to Mansel and Dora (Hammack) Pyles, in Walla Walla. Linda was raised and attended school in Nezperce and attended college at Northwest Christian College.

   In 1961 Linda met and later married Bill Eyler, the father of her first two children, Sandra and Robert. She returned to Wallowa County and worked at Wallowa Memorial Hospital and at several other jobs supporting her children.

   Linda married Gary F. Marks in 1969 and moved to the family farm on Prairie Creek in Joseph, OR. She enjoyed returning to the ranch life and raising her children. In 1971 Linda had her youngest child, Ryan. Linda later moved to Irrigon, OR, and worked in the food processing industry for several years.

   Linda married Hal Hals, enjoying farming and raising dairy cows in Sunnyside, WA. After Hal passed away, Linda reconnected and married her high school sweetheart, Don Berry. Linda and Don were able to enjoy their retirement years traveling, sightseeing and reconnecting with old acquaintances.

   Linda and Don have resided near Orofino and were working on the family home and making future plans prior to Linda's untimely passing. She had a green thumb when it came to plants and gardening. Linda always enjoyed playing cards and games with the family.

   Surviving are Linda's husband, Don Berry; father, Mansel Pyles of Clarkston; children and spouses, Sandra (Eyler) and Robert Sarrett of La Grande, OR, Robert and Rachel Eyler of Snohomish, WA, Ryan Marks and Diane Waters of Portland, OR; siblings and spouses, Dodie Giles and Mark Edgar, and Nancy Bonson, all of Clarkston; grandchildren, Amanda and William Kenworthy of Kennewick, Jesse Sarrett, and Nicholas Eyler; great-grandson William Jack Kenworthy; stepsons Donald, Chris and Joe Berry; two nieces, Julie Cassell and Angie Nightingale and their families living in Clarkston.

   Linda was preceded in death by her mother, Dora Pyles.

   A private family gathering will be conducted.

Dr. Elvin T. Williams, 88, McMinnville, OR

   A memorial service for Dr. Elvin T. (Tom) Williams of McMinnville, OR will be held Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Macy & Son Funeral Home in McMinnville, OR. Tom died of cancer at Oakwood Country Place in McMinnville.  Tom was 88 years old on Nov.11-2011.

   Tom was born November 11, 1923, son of Ned and Irene Williams of Winlock, WA. They preceded him in death.

   Tom is survived by his wife, Beverly A. Williams of McMinnville, OR; children, Michael T. Williams, Eugene, OR, Nancy J. Alderson, Terrebonne; David P. Williams, Bellevue, WA; Cathie L. Williams, Tigard, OR; and Sue M. Williams, Puyallup, WA; four stepchildren, Ken Robb, Seaside, OR, Craig Robb, Malvern, AR, Teri Andersson, Springfield, OR; and Scott Robb. Eugene, OR.

   Also too many grandchildren and great grandchildren to count. His former wife Catherine Conner preceded him in death in 1988.

   Tom considered himself a native of Springfield, OR having moved to Springfield, March 4, 1932, from Winlock, WA with his parents who opened and operated Irene’s Café in March 1932 until the death of Tom’s mother in July 1968.

   Tom graduated from Springfield High School May 28, 1942 (a very special class); University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Science 1949; Master of Science in Physical Education 1950; and Ed.D. in School Administration, Oregon State University, 1970. Tom was a “Beaver.”

   He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II overseas in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean Theaters as a member of the Navy Armed Guard. Tom considered it an honor and privilege to serve his country in time of need.

   Tom was a life long - public school and university educator having taught at Oregon, Oregon State University and Oregon University, Monmouth, OR. He began his educational career as a sixth grade teacher at Maple Elementary School in Springfield, OR. He coached high school basketball, baseball, track and football at various times during his career at Springfield High School, Junction City High School, Elmira High School, and Burns High School, Burns, OR.

   He was also principal of Junction City and Astoria High Schools; Assistant Superintendent of Schools of Springfield and McMinnville School Districts; Superintendent of Crook County School District, Prineville, Oregon and Clearwater County School District, Orofino. In addition he also served public education as a school board member for McMinnville School District, twice as chairman.

   Additionally Tom served on a number of state and national educational boards including American Association of School Administrators; American Association of School Personnel Administrators; National School Public Relations Associations; National Associations of Educational Negotiators; National Academy of School Executives/Danforth Fellow; John Hay Fellow, Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts; Oregon Association of School Executives; and Oregon School Activities Association. Tom was also a member of Phi Delta Kappa, University of Oregon.

   Tom served as a member of the Idaho State Board of Corrections; Yamhill County Community Corrections; and McMinnville Budget Committee.

   Dr. Williams enjoyed his family and many friends. He was especially fond of his wife, Bev and “her up beat and can do attitude.” He also found pleasure in outdoor activities especially fishing and camping in the mountains of Central and Eastern Oregon. In addition Tom was actively involved in creative writing, oil painting, photography, rock hounding, reading and athletics occupied a large segment of his active and rewarding life.

   The Springfield High School Class of 1942 was very special to Tom as he considered it a rock-solid foundation for life. And, of course he was an Oregon State University “Beaver Believer,” all the way.

  Private interment will be held in Winlock, WA, at a later date.

William Edgar Cramer, 82

   William (Bill) Edgar Cramer, passed away Nov. 5, 2011, in Lewiston. He was 82.

   He was born Aug. 15, 1929, in Orofino to William Edgar and Gladys May Gilbert Cramer. He attended school in Orofino, where he was a star on the football team.

   He was a veteran of the Korean War, receiving a honorable discharge. He spent much of his life working in the woods as a timber faller.

   He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Stanley G. Cramer and Harold Cramer, and his sister, Carol May Walker. Bill is survived by a son, Tom Cramer; a daughter, Debbie; his sister-in-law, Barbara Cramer Thomas; a niece and many nephews.

   There was a graveside memorial at noon Saturday, Nov. 12, at the cemetery in Pierce.

Carol May Walker, 84

   Carol May Walker passed away Oct. 21, 2011, in Lewiston. She was 84.

   She was born Sept. 7, 1927, to William Edgar and Gladys May Gilbert Cramer.

   She married Ronald Walker in April of 1949. He passed away in 1977.

   Carol attended school in Orofino. In 1981, she earned her high school equivalency diploma.

   She worked as a waitress for many years at the Headquarters Cafe in Pierce, and the catalog department at Montgomery Ward in Lewiston. After her husband passed away, she worked as a janitor at Pierce Elementary and at the Jaype Mill.

   She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Barbara Cramer Thomas of Orofino and Linda Hardin of Lewiston, and many nieces and nephews.

   She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Stanley G. Cramer and Harold Cramer. Her brother Bill Cramer passed away Nov. 5, 2011.

   There was a graveside memorial Nov. 12 at the cemetery in Pierce.

Ruth (Lacey) Simler, 82

   Ruth Louise (Lacey) Simler passed away at home Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, with her family at her side. She was 82.

   Ruth was born Aug. 24, 1929, to Edgar and Marie Lacey at their home on Angel Ridge near Peck. She spent her first eight years at Angel Ridge before her parents moved their young family to Woodland, where Ruth completed elementary school. In 1943, Ruth began high school at Kamiah High School, boarding in Kamiah during the week and returning home to Woodland on weekends. After graduating from high school in 1947, she began a three-year nursing program at St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Lewiston, where she made lifelong friends and many happy memories.

   In 1950, Ruth married Russell Simler of Woodland, where the young couple began farming and started a family. In 1960, the couple and their first three children moved to Kamiah, where the family grew with the addition of two more children. In 1968, with their oldest daughter about to begin college, Ruth returned to nursing and began commuting to nursing jobs at the Idaho State Hospital in Orofino, a private care center at Greer, and eventually the Idaho County Nursing Home in Grangeville.

   She is survived by her husband, Russell Simler; her children and sons-in-laws, Elizabeth Fil, Mary Jo and Terry Sexton, Doug Simler, Ann and John Warofka, and John Simler; her sisters, Dorothy (Charlie) Townsend, and Martha Meisner; brothers Arthur (Jackie) and Roy (Jacque) Lacey; brother-in-law Bill Brandt; her grandchildren, Nicole Schneider, Eric Fil, Todd Sexton and Lindsey Simler; and many other family and friends.

   A memorial service was conducted Saturday, at Trenary Funeral Home, 18 West First Ave., in Kooskia, with a potluck gathering following at Kooskia Presbyterian Church at 501 Idaho St.

Norman J. Olson, 49, Orofino

   Norman J. Olson, 49, of Orofino died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011 at his home. Arrangements are pending with Pine Hills Funeral Chapel.

Linda Marie Berry, 69, Orofino

   Linda Marie Berry, 69, Orofino, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, WA. Merchant Funeral Home of Clarkston, WA is in charge of arrangements.

Norma Pettengill, 78, Peck

   Norma Ruth Pettengill, Peck, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011 at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino. She was 78.

   A funeral service was held Nov. 9 at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel. Burial took place afterwards at Riverside Cemetery.

   Pine Hills Funeral Chapel is in care of arrangements.

Linda Stewart, 65, Lewiston

   Linda Lee Stewart, Lewiston, passed away Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at Lewiston Orchards Rehabilitation Center. She was 65.

   Linda was born Nov. 19, 1945, in Idaho Falls, to Dona Jean Johnson and Clarence Christin Larsen.

   She married Mark Hanna in Aug. 1964, later divorcing in 1979. She re-married Lesley C. Stewart, which ended in divorce years later.

   She is survived by her daughter, Amber Ross (husband Marty) and their children, Mariah Hanna and Kaleob Ross of Orofino; sons Jimmy Hanna and Mark Hanna, both of Lewiston; sisters Leona Bellamy of Fort Smith, AR., Julie Robertson of Toppenish, WA, Toni Larsen of Kalispell, MT, Kristie Wright of Idaho Falls, Nola Aldrich of Las Vegas, NV and Tammy Edwards of Mesa, AZ; and brother Jimmy Larsen of Fort Smith, AR

   Linda was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Christin Larsen; mother Dona Jean Johnson Larsen; and a sister Jackie Sharlene Larsen.

Tyra L. Francis, 43, Boise

   Tyra L. Francis was born June 21, 1968, in Walla Walla to Gene and Carol Ferderer. On Nov. 3, 2011, after a brief battle with melanoma cancer, Tyra went home to be with Christ Jesus. She was 43.

   A memorial service was held at Friday at Calvary Chapel, 123 Auto Drive, in Boise. Remembrances may be left for the family at www.AccentFuneral.com.

   Services are under the direction of Accent Funeral Home of Meridian.

   Tyra (Ty) was raised in Walla Walla, WA.  She attended Green Park Elementary, Pioneer Junior High and graduated in 1986 from Walla Walla High. While in school, she played basketball and was a cheerleader.

   Tyra continued her education at Walla Walla Community College. After receiving her associate's degree, she transferred to Eastern Washington University and obtained her bachelor's degree in social work. The pursuit of this degree allowed Tyra to follow her desire to serve and love others.

   While attending EWU, Tyra met her husband, Leo Francis. They were married March 24, 1990. They began their family when daughter Jordan Diane was born June 9, 1992. Their son, Austin Gene (Auggie), was born May 30, 1996.

   Tyra was employed with Warm Springs Counseling Center. Prior to this she worked for Ada County Sheriff's Youth Foundation and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Tyra had various other opportunities to use her incredible social work skills.

   Tyra enjoyed all activities that included her family: baseball games, traveling, camping and shopping. Tyra continued to get in her daily run. One of her most memorable times was the Susan G. Komen Three Day for the Cure event in San Diego. Tyra, along with two very special high school friends, Lora Baker Abbey and Angela Doyle Fishback, completed this in honor of her sister, Tina, who is a cancer survivor.

   Tyra's spirit was strong. She wanted to be used for God's purpose. The memories of Tyra's joyous personality will remain with us and her spirit lives forever with Christ Jesus.

   Tyra was preceded in death by her grandparents, Harry and Edna Ferderer and Jack and Betty Bollinger.

   She is survived by her husband, Leo and their two children, Jordan and Auggie; her parents, Gene and Carol Ferderer; sister Tina Holbrook; brother Troy Ferderer; her father-and mother-in-law Gordon and Ginny White; brother - and sister-in-law Tom Francis and Diana Winslow.

Linda Louise Horning, 66, Deary

   Linda Louise Horning, of Deary, passed away from complications of an infection early Friday morning, Nov. 4, 2011, at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, WA. She was 66.

   Linda was born Feb. 3, 1945, at Lewiston, to Lloyd and Edna Irene Jones Eckman.

   She grew up and went to school in Juliaetta and Kendrick, graduating from Kendrick High School in 1963. Even though it was the '60s and there was limited knowledge about diabetes, she was accepted in the nursing program at Boise Junior College (now BSU), graduating as registered nurse. After graduating, she accepted a position as a surgical nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in Boise.

   While in college, she met Lee Carl Horning and they were married in Midvale, Aug. 13, 1966. After Lee finished his degree, they moved to Aberdeen, where he taught school and Linda worked at Power County Hospital.

   In 1973, they moved to a ranch near Deary in the Avon area and later purchased it from her mother and stepfather. Linda became a full-time wife, mother and farmer-rancher.

   She drove school bus for 10 years, and served as the librarian for the White Pine schools for four years. Having been diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 18, Linda became very knowledgeable about the disease and was an excellent example of how to live with and control it.

   Her nursing skills came in handy many times while on the ranch, having an accident-likely-to-happen husband, and active sons. She was always ready to help someone else, whether it be a ride to a doctor's appointment, or just a kind gesture to someone in need. Linda loved God and was an active member of the Deary Community Bible Church. She taught Bible study for many years and will be remembered as an excellent wife, mom, and friend to many.

   Linda is survived by her husband, Lee, at their home; her sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Tina Horning of Spokane, WA and Loren and Kate Horning of Post Falls; she also leaves a foster-daughter, Terri Brandt of Snohomish, WA.; seven grandchildren and six foster grandchildren; a brother, Leonard (Kathy) Eckman of Orofino; and nephews, Larry (Joan) Eckman of Yakima, WA, Lester (Stephanie) Eckman in Germany and Lance (Kourtney) Eckman of Orofino.

   She was preceded in death by her parents and two half-brothers, Lester and Lawrence Eckman.

   The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, at Trinity Baptist Church, 711 Fairview Drive, Moscow.

   The Rev. Jared Donigian of the Deary Community Bible Church will officiate and burial will follow at the Avon Cemetery. A reception and potluck dinner will be at the Deary Church following.

   The family suggests memorials be made to the Deary Community Bible Church in Linda's memory.

Mary Litchfield, 91, Yakima, WA

   Mary was born April 30, 1920, to Erastas Clifford Aplington and Mary Sophia Oliver, in Clarkston, WA.

   She married Charles Nelson Litchfield Jr. just four days after graduating from Clarkston High School. They eloped and were married in Bonners Ferry June 1, 1938. They were happily married until his death in 1973. They raised five children and lived on Warner Avenue in the Lewiston Orchards until 1978.

   For several years she worked as a nurse's aide for a convalescent center in the Orchards, earning enough income to put several of her children through school. She moved to Yakima in 1978 to be near one of her sons and lived there for 33 years.

   Mary worked at the S.D.A. Community Services in various capacities since 1957, both in Lewiston and also in Yakima, WA. She helped make thousands of quilts over the years to donate to those who needed them. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed reading - especially scripture.

   She was a great mother, very gracious, always helping others and putting others ahead of herself. We will miss her dearly.

   Mary is survived by her daughters, Lana Lee and Joe Decicio and children of Sandpoint, and Barbara and Ransom Bentley of Ahsahka; sons Steve and Colette Litchfield of Yakima, WA and Doug and June Litchfield of Lewiston; sister Lucille Hogan of Sparks, NV.; grandchildren Cliff Decicio, Frank Decicio, Rick Decicio, Randy Decicio, Dan and Beth Litchfield, Robert Butler, Louise and Brian Hofer, Marc Litchfield, Elena Litchfield and Lacie Bentley; great-grandchildren Jeromy Decicio, Aaron Decicio, Jolana Decicio, Jared Litchfield, Tiffany Kite, McKayla Butler, Justin Wiese, Chelsia Weise and Samuel Hoefer; and four great-great-grandchildren.      

   She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Nelson Litchfield Jr.; daughter Nancy Jean Wigant; and sisters Vivian Nichols and Nadine Bertran.

   At the request of Mary and her family there will be no services. Merchant Funeral Home of Clarkston is in care of arrangements.

Clifford L. Immel, Jr., 83, Ahsahka

   Born April 12, 1928 in Pomona, CA to C.L., Sr. and Geraldine Immel, he entered into rest Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011 at Clearwater Valley Hospital with his wife and family nearby.

   Cliff was a fly fisherman who tied his own flies. They always caught the biggest fish. He also enjoyed jigsaw, crossword and Sudoku puzzles, Keno, gardening and watching the wildlife out his window.

   He served in the Navy during WW II on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific Theater.

   In 1986 he retired, after 36 years, from Southern California Edison, and with his wife Barbara, left immediately for their home in Idaho.

   He is survived by his true love and best friend, his wife Barbara; sons Mark, Dennis and Dave, and daughter Florence. Also his stepdaughters Linda, Cynthia and Katherine, along with sixteen grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, his niece Elizabeth and nephew Phillip.

   He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Phyliss and stepson Scott.

   Rest in peace my love. You are missed.

Helen Newby Baldwin, 66, Potlatch

   A memorial service for Helen Kathleen “Kathy” Baldwin, 66, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m. at the Community Bible Church, 1185 W. Fairview, Colfax, WA with Paul Baldwin and Milo Salmeier officiating.

   Mrs. Baldwin passed away early Thursday morning on Oct. 13, 2011 at her home at Potlatch. She was 66.

    A family urn burial will be held at a later date at the Cemetery in Kooskia.

   She was born on Jan. 9, 1945 at Grangeville to Alvis Franklin and Anna M. (Mason) Newby.  She attended and graduated from the Grangeville High School in 1963.

   She married David Allen Baldwin on Nov. 23, 1963 at Grangeville and the couple made their home at Grangeville. Her husband worked as a saw filer for local sawmills and they lived in many communities including Elk City, Superior, MT, St. Anthony and Salmon. The couple moved to at Potlatch in 1980 where they raised their family and made their home since.

   Kathy was employed at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow from 1992 to 2007 as a Certified Nursing Assistant in the same day surgery unit. In 2007 she retired to spend more time with her husband and family.

   Kathy enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, crosswords and bargain hunting. Kathy was active in the Potlatch Jr. Miss Program for several years and also opened her home to foreign exchange students. Nothing brought more joy to her life than her husband Dave and having her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, friends and family surrounding her.

   Survivors include her husband David Baldwin, Potlatch, four daughters, Margeret Horn and her husband Guy, Potlatch, Helen Baldwin, Moscow, Tonya DeYoung and her husband Doug, Colfax, WA, Ronda Backlin and her husband Brad, Cobb, CA, three sisters, Nancy Cline, Grangeville, Sharon DeBarber, Hamilton, MT, Patricia Salmeier, Meridian; one brother, Marvin Newby, Greeley, CO.

   She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Robert Wesley Turney, 78, Orofino

   Robert Wesley Turney, Orofino, passed away Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011 with his family at  his side in Tulsa, OK. He was 78.

   Robert was born Nov. 22, 1932. Robert’s youth was spent growing up in Fort Thomas, AZ, where he enjoyed such things as swimming and fishing with his four sisters and nine brothers.

   Later Robert enlisted in the United States Navy where he spent the next three years on a transport ship. After his time in the service he met Lila Wade and they were married on March 19, 1960 in Pomeroy, WA. They then moved to Lewiston where they had two children, a son and a daughter.

   Robert owned and operated a janitorial company for the next 10 years in Lewiston and in his spare time enjoyed team roping and spending time with his family.

   In 1970 Robert and his family moved to Orofino where he purchased a ranch, raised cattle, and harvested hay. Robert loved to hunt, having gone on several high mountain elk hunts with his son and many friends. Robert liked to fish, work with cattle and really enjoyed working with horses.

   Robert is survived by his wife at their ranch, his daughter; his son and wife, and several brothers and sisters.

   The family wishes to thank Camelot Treatment Center/Hospice Care in Tulsa.

   Cremation has taken place and no services are planned, at the request of the family.

Charles McKinney, 84, Sun City, AZ

   Charles (Chuck) McKinney passed away Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, in Sun City, AZ. He was 84.

   He was born in Weippe April 4, 1927 and attended Weippe schools graduating in 1944. He served in the Navy, after which he attended the University of Idaho, graduating in 1950. He later earned his MBA from Utah State University.

   During his youth he was the paper boy delivering the paper on his lunch hour. While in high school he participated in band and sports. He also worked in saw mills while in high school and during the summer while attending college.

   After Chuck graduated from the University of Idaho, he worked in Lewiston as an accountant for Lewiston Motor Co. In 1960 he joined the Martin Marietta Company working at several Titan missile sites. He then worked at the Denver facility of Lockheed Martin in cost management.

   Chuck returned to Weippe in 2010 for the Camas Festival and all class reunion. He was very proud of his roots in Weippe and told many stories of his time working in the saw mill and growing up in the close knit community.

   He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Scottish Rite, El Jebel Shrine’s, Elks and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.

   Chuck was preceded in death by his parents John A. and Mabel McKinney; brothers, John, Harlow and Lloyd.

   He married the love of his life, Wanda Cole in 1949. They have two daughters, Charlene Farwell (Randy) of Pocatello and Carmen Beckman (Mike) of Orlando, FL; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

   A memorial service was held in Sun City Sept. 29.

Burdett (B) Ferguson, 87

   Burdett "B" Ferguson went to be with his heavenly Father Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, surrounded by his family, at the Tekoa (Wash.) Care Center, where he had resided for the past few months. He was 87.

   B was born Nov. 11, 1923, to George and Lisa Ferguson on the family homestead at Freeman Creek. He was the youngest of six children and attended the Freeman Creek School.

   During World War II, he and his brother Joe joined the U.S. Army. They were stationed at Blackland Air Field in Waco, Texas. B trained pilots in a flight simulator. After his discharge he returned to the Orofino area. He got his pilot's license and spent many happy hours in the air with family and friends.

   He married Louise Frost and had one daughter. Louise died in an auto accident. He met and married Reva Leeper in 1957. She survives him at Wedgewood Terrace in Lewiston.

   B went to work for Potlatch Forests Inc. in Headquarters. He tried several jobs, but found his home in the old Mack logging truck No. 38, which he drove for many years. He also worked on many of the log drives. He piloted the Jesse J., one of the boats, which was used to ferry the bank crews. He had the privilege of running one of the first jet boats on the Clearwater River. He also ferried the cougars, stars and film crews on the river when Walt Disney was filming the movie, "Charlie the Lonesome Cougar."

   He is survived by his wife; his very special son, David and June Leeper of Lewiston; and his daughter, Ilene and Lee M. McEwen of AK.

   He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings.

   At his request there will be no service.

Keith B. Powell, 91, Lewiston

   Keith Powell passed away Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at Life Care Center in Lewiston. He was 91.

    He was born Jan. 12, 1920, in Browning, Mont., to Sarah and William O. Powell.

   In 1936, he graduated from Culdesac High School and received an associate's electrician degree from the University of Idaho in Moscow.

   He married Evelyn Nelson June 26, 1943, in Orofino. Keith was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army and spent time in the Philippines. He then worked as a farmer in Culdesac for about five years and became an employee of the Rural Electric Association (now Clearwater Power) of eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Later he went to work for Potlatch Corp. in Lewiston, retiring in 1984.

   Keith is survived by his wife, Evelyn Powell of Lewiston; son, Alan Powell and wife Judi of Lewiston; granddaughters, Colette and Jon Seubert of Spokane Valley, Rochelle and Wade Bittle of Leavenworth, Wash., Danielle and Stan Marsh of Spokane Valley, Rhonda Raff of Rapid City, S.D., Darci Tyler of Spokane, and Lori and Doug Brown of Deary; grandsons, Bradley and Kelli Powell of Tualatin, Ore., and Chuck and Katrina Morris of Orofino; as well as his 16 great-grandchildren.

   A funeral and dinner were held Saturday at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Lewiston.

   A memorial service will be held for Jacob Stout on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. at Covenant House Christian Center, Orofino, located at 12517 Hartford Ave. Jacob died Sept. 29, 2011.

Henry (Mike) Morrison, 76, Orofino

   Henry (Michael H.) Morrison, Orofino, the “miracle man”, got his last “Miracle” of all – he went to be with the Lord on Oct. 7, 2011. This ended 17½ years of fighting ill health here on earth. He was 76.

   He was born in Garfield, AR on April 17, 1935 to Virgil and Nova (Duke) Morrison.

   Mike married Patricia A. Pedersen on April 17, 1957 in Boise. Their three precious children were also born in Boise.

   Mike did many things in his working life and all were done with much gusto. In his retirement years he especially enjoyed his family, fishing, mowing the field, and growing tomatoes (that’s a tomato on his head in the picture).

   He is survived by his wife Pat at their Orofino home; daughter Debbie (Tim) Ringer of Grangeville; sons Michael Steven Morrison of Pocatello and Daniel Scott Morrison of Anchorage, AK; brother-in-law Max L. Pedersen of Alaska; four grandchildren, Michael Brandon (Kandi) Morrison, Kendra Marie (Josh) Nelson, Jennifer Nicole Morrison and Jordan Ann Leininger.

   Also surviving him are three great-grandchildren, Alexis, Michael Alan and Ezekiel and a niece and two nephews of Arizona and California. He also leaves behind a dear friend Wayne “Perk” Perkins of Orofino and an old high school buddy Floyd Gambrel of Eden.

   He is now in the arms of those who preceded him in death; his parents and his sister Virgie Pedersen Truchot.

   At his request no services are planned. His ashes and the ashes of his beloved poodle Foxy will be spread over the open field at his home on Eureka Ridge.

   We miss you, but are so grateful your struggles and pain are over, now you can run and frolic with your little Foxy that you missed so much. Rest in Peace.

Joann K. Hansen, 79, Asotin

    Joann K. Hansen of Asotin passed away Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, at Riverview Residential Care Center of a brain tumor. She was 79. Joann was born Dec. 23, 1931, to Josef Schmid and Clara Pritchard in Fraser.

    Josef went back to Germany and could not return because of the outbreak of World War II. Clara married the Rev. Emmett Bonner Feb. 1, 1934. Joann had five brothers, Emmett Lee, Tim, Terry, Jim and Philip. She also had three sisters, Joy, Mona and Willy Jo.

    Albert Hansen and Joann were married April 2, 1949.

    Through the years, she worked in the logging camps and worked in the office for Potlatch as a key-punch operator. She was a substitute teacher for area schools, and she taught piano lessons every morning that they lived in Headquarters. Joann loved her family and God with all of her heart, mind and soul.

    Joann and Ab traveled all over the world helping as missionaries, their favorite place was in the Philippines. Joann was the person who people called when they needed prayer. It didn’t matter what time of day that you needed prayer, she was always available. Joann held several positions in Aglow. Her love and compassion for women shined through whenever she found a woman in need.

    Joann loved to be outdoors doing something. She loved to hunt, fish, go camping with her family, gardening and skiing. She was a great decorator; she loved to change the appearance of her home with various antiques and treasures from her children and grandchildren. She always tried to go to all of the grandkids concerts and activities. Her grandkids called her Gigi.

    Ab and Joann had five children whom they raised in the Headquarters area: Chuck, who is deceased, and his widow Lonna of Lewiston; Kim and his wife Yolanda of Gig Harbor, Wash.; Quinn Hansen of Clarkston; Craig and his wife Jeanne of Lewiston; and Scott and his wife Cheri of Lewiston. Ab and Joann have 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

    Joann was also preceded in death by her husband Ab; brother Emmett Lee Bonner; sister Joy Bullock; and grandson Shon Hansen.

Stephen Pruitt, 58, Hailey

   Stephen Douglas Pruitt was born on October 21, 1952 in Moscow. He was the only child of Wilmer Wesley Pruitt and Lucille Poore Pruitt. Always an Idaho native, Steve was raised in Orofino and Kamiah along the Clearwater River in the northern part of the State.

   He received his Bachelor of Architecture from University of Idaho, Moscow in May 1977. Steve was active in the Greek system at U of I as a proud Sigma Nu. He met Collett Marie Warren, an Alpha Phi the first week of their freshman year.

   They began dating their sophomore year, and in August 1975, the two were married in Collett's hometown of Elko, NV. Upon graduation, Collett and Steve car camped across Europe and Scandinavia for four months before settling in Coeur d'Alene,  

    In July 1978 they moved to the Wood River Valley where they raised both of their daughters. Gariety Warren Pruitt was born May 1984, and Kaley Warren Pruitt arrived February 1988. Both girls affectionately called him 'Papa'. Steve's father 'Bus' passed away December 1987, and he lost his mother December 2010.

   Steve and Collett moved to the Wood River Valley so Steve could practice residential architecture. He was a licensed, registered, AIA architect for 33 years, designing homes in California, Nevada, the Pacific Northwest and even Arkansas. He designed the family's current home in Zinc Spur in 1983 where the girls grew up and still come home to today.

   He founded his own firm Architecture Plus in 1986. Steve was passionate about designing creative and functional homes. He formed many lifelong friendships during his career; he had an innate ability to listen, envision, and enable his clients to realize their ideal homes.

   Throughout his life, Steve firmly believed in contributing to the communities he lived in. Always enthusiastic, he was an avid parent volunteer during Gariety and Kaley's entire school careers. From leading the architectural project at Hemingway to repainting the hallways of WRHS, he enjoyed being an active father.

   Within the community, he also served with: Blaine County Planning & Zoning, Lions Club, Sawtooth City Homeowners Association, Building Contractors Association of the Wood River Valley, Mountain States Chapter of AIA, Laughing Stock Theatre Company, Ketchum Arts Commission, Wood River Economic Partnership, and Ketchum Community Development Corporation. Recently he was particularly proud of his role in the creation of the Ketchum Town Square, Art on 4th, and the Kagan Park.

   His adventurous soul led him to many places in the world. He and Collett have fond memories of their travels to Europe, the Caribbean, and India. He cherished the Sawtooth Basin and camped with his family at their property in Smiley Creek every summer.

   As the girls grew up, the Pruitts took many memorable family trips to the National Parks of the West and the big cities on both coasts. Steve also backpacked with friends and took annual trips with Kaley throughout the state of Idaho.

   While Gariety was living in South America, Steve and Kaley visited her in Paraguay and together they hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru. His adventures at home included creative cooking and being behind the wheel of his treasured 1914 Model T 'Toady'.

   Steve had a love for the stage, and it developed into quite the family affair. Over the years, all four Pruitts performed side by side. He was a familiar face in many Laughing Stock productions, beginning with his first chorus role in 1979 in Mame. Some of his most favorite roles were: Nicely Nicely in Guys & Dolls, Will in Oklahoma, the Coach in Damn Yankees, Sancho in Man of La Mancha, a townsman in Christmas Carol, and of course, the Emcee in Cabaret. As the theater became a second home for the Pruitts, the fellow players became, and always will be, their second family.

   Steve's love for his girls has been his motivating force throughout his adult life. This was most apparent when he was diagnosed with a malignant aggressive sarcoma in his spine in July of 2010. He withstood radiation, a one-of-a kind tumor resection surgery, chemotherapy, clinical trials, and alternative medicine. He was treated with skill and compassion at the Mountain State Tumor Institute in both Twin Falls and Boise, and most extensively at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

   Through the grace and generosity of family friends in Newton, the Pruitts were able to enjoy a lot of time together in this crucial year. Steve and Collett watched proudly as their daughters began their careers in New York City. Gariety is pursing Dual Master's Degrees in Elections & Campaign Management and Latin American & Latino Studies at Fordham University. After graduating from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Kaley is now dancing and choreographing professionally as well as working in arts administration.

   Despite Steve's brave and difficult battle, treatments did not stop the growth of the tumors. The Pruitts returned to the Valley to enjoy its beautiful Indian Summer with family and friends. Just before dawn on Monday October 3rd, Steve passed peacefully at his Zinc Spur home surrounded by Collett, Gariety, Kaley, and their beloved dog Mavis.

   There will be a celebration of Steve's life on his birthday, Friday, Oct. 21. It will be held at the NexStage Theatre starting at 7 p.m, with the program beginning at 8:30 p.m.

   In lieu of flowers, Collett, Gariety, and Kaley suggest a memorial donation to Laughing Stock Theatre Company or Hospice & Palliative Care of the Wood River Valley. Although his time was too short in years, his life was lived fully; Steve will always be remembered and celebrated by those who knew and loved him.

Robert W. Turney, 78, Orofino

   Robert Wesley Turney of Orofino died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011 in Tulsa, OK. He was 78.

   Robert was born Nov. 23, 1932 and spent most of his life as a rancher.

   Robert is survived by his wife, Lila Turney and his son, Ray Turney, both of Orofino.

   A private family service will be held.

Clifford Immel Jr., 83, Ahsahka

   Clifford Logan Immel Jr., Ahsahka, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino. He was 83.

   James E. Lawrence, Orofino, died Saturday, Oct, 8, 2011, at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation. Arrangements are pending with Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home of Lewiston.

Lou Lilya, 88, Orofino

   Lou Lilya, longtime resident of Orofino, passed away Monday March 28, 2011 in St. Helens, OR. She was 88.

   Lou, with her husband Tex, lived in Peck for several years. Lou moved to a mobile home park in Riverside, outside of Orofino, after Tex passed away. She spent many years working in and managing the Fish Inc. Thrift Store in Orofino. She was a devoted and active member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Orofino.

   Lou was born to August and Ellen Simon on Jan. 31, 1923 in Topeka, KS. She and her husband Tex were married in 1942. They lived many years in Hawthorne, CA before moving to Idaho after retiring.

   They have two sons, Randy of Orofino and Ron of Genesee. They survive Lou, as do seven grandchildren and great-grandchildren and several cousins. She is also survived by a sister, Dorothy, and two brothers, Leonard Simon and Kenny Simon, all of Missouri.

   Graveside services with Rev. Father Sipho of Orofino officiating will be at the Riverside Cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.

   Her ashes will rest forever with her beloved husband Tex, at their grave there.

   Lou was a very outgoing and very friendly, lovely lady, and is sorely missed and loved by all who knew her.

   Her many friends are invited to a coffee hour at Brookside Landing, 431 Johnson Ave., Orofino, after the service. Come and enjoy visiting and stories of our beloved Lou Lilya.

Helen L. Anderson, 87, Troy

   Helen L. Anderson of Troy died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011 at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow, surrounded by her family. She was 87.

   Helen was born June 10, 1924 at Nez Perce to George and Kathryn Schlader. She grew up and attended school at Orofino, graduating from high school there. Helen then attended the University of Idaho, graduating with a degree in Education.

   She began her career teaching at Potlatch, and while there met and married Dorwin B. Anderson in Orofino on May 12, 1951. They made their home in Moscow until 1957 when they built and moved into their home in Troy. In 1964, she returned to teaching in Deary and retired from the Troy School District in 1988. Over the years she taught home economics, health science and U.S. Government.

   She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, the American Legion Auxiliary, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Moscow, the Idaho Education Association and had served as president. She enjoyed camping and fishing, sewing, boating, quilting, was an avid reader and bridge player, and will be remembered especially for her cooking. Helen was Co-Grand Marshall of the Troy Day parade in 2008.

   Surviving are her sons, Marvin Anderson of Moscow and Joe Anderson of Cottonwood; her daughters, Pattie Soucek of McCall and Jill Martinez of Everett, WA; her grandchildren, Kyle Anderson and Kara Soucek, Ryan and Anderson and Mindy Anderson-Daniel. She also leaves a sister, Shirley Seeley of Orofino.

   Helen was preceded in death by her husband in March of 2008, a brother, Raymond Schlader and a sister, Irma Egland.

   Viewing took place at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow on Sept. 30. The funeral mass was celebrated Oct. 1 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Moscow, followed by burial at the Moscow Cemetery, then a reception and luncheon at St. Mary's Family Center.

   The family suggests memorials be made to the Troy Ambulance Fund.

Jacob L. Stout, 82, Orofino

   Jake Stout of Orofino passed away to be with his Lord and loved ones on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011 at Clearwater Valley Hospital and Clinics in Orofino. He was 82.

   He was born on Oct. 3, 1928 in Pineville, MO to Jess and Marie Stout.

   He married the love of his life on Sept. 1, 1956 in Orofino. They made their home in Headquarters until his retirement from Potlatch Corporation in 1991, where he worked as a cat mechanic for 30+ years.

   After his retirement Jake and his wife moved to Kamiah for several years before moving to Orofino. After his wife died in 2009, and becoming ill himself, he moved in with his daughter and her husband, where he lived until his death.

   Our beloved dad and grandpa told us many stories and gave us many memories to carry on about his time of picking huckleberries, fishing, hunting and camping. If anyone knew him, he would always start telling you about how many huckleberries he picked. I think in all the things he did in his life this had to be one of his biggest joys he had.

   He was one of the biggest fans of Marion Morrison, a.k.a. John Wayne. He had all of his movies, and anything else that had the Duke on it, he owned. The only time he wouldn’t get up from the TV was when there was a John Wayne movie playing.

   Jake is survived by three daughters, Katherine Ladd and her husband Tim of Orofino, Eva Snyder and her husband Roy of Council, and Becky Nye and her husband David of Escondido, CA; eight grandchildren, Darcie Wilson Ladd, Genesee, Tomothy Jacob (TJ) Ladd, Genesee, Valorie Cameron, Boise, Sarah Wedding, Lewiston, Jacob Stuart, Clarkston, WA, Darlena Stuart, Lewiston, Johanna Stuart, Ahsahka and D.J. Stuart Clarkston, WA and 11 great-grandchildren.

   He is also survived by three brothers, Martin Stout, Orofino, Don Stout, Kooskia and Clyde Stout, Springfield, MO; and one sister, Shirley Stewart, Weippe.

   He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Lucille; his parents Jess and Marie; an infant daughter, Sarah Marie Stout; an infant grandson, Roy Snyder; brother Earl Stout and two sisters, Carol Phillips and Ellen Wisdom.

   A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. at Covenant House Christian Center, 12517 Hartford Ave, Orofino, where he served the Lord the last few years of his life.

   He had so much pride for his family that it made him a hardworking man and he will be missed by al of us.

Ward Lee Frost, 94, Grangeville

   Ward Lee Frost, 94, of Grangeville, passed away peacefully Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at the Grangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center, not far from where he was born on a homestead Dec. 5, 1916, on the Joseph Plains near Boles, to Joseph and Myrtle Lee Hanks Frost. Ward was third from the youngest of nine brothers and three sisters.

   He attended Spring Camp School, riding a horse with Cassie Cox Warren until he got his own pony, “Shorty.”

   His father worked away from the homestead a lot so the family shared in running the ranch. Clarence, the second oldest, took care of the stock. According to Ward, his mother ran a “tight ship.” They all packed pails and loaded water barrels on the pack string, hauling water for the garden. Their survival depended on the garden.

   Some winters they would drive the stock, load all the kids in a wagon and go spend the winter at Ward's grandparent's place on Sunnyside, near Lenore. With springtime, they would head back up the Gifford Grade toward home.

   The family spent time in Pendleton, OR, where Ward's father worked for a natural gas plant. Ward's father, Joseph, was killed in a gas leak on July 3, 1925. The family brought their father to Lewiston and buried him on Normal Hill.

   They sold the homestead and moved to the Lewiston Orchards on Preston Avenue, where his nephew Dale Frost and niece Rhonda Frost still live.

   While attending Lewiston High School, Ward excelled in playing football and baseball. At LHS, he met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Louise Larson; they were married in June 1937.

   They farmed in the Red Bird area south of Lewiston with Louise's family for a short time before moving to town so Ward could play baseball with the 1937 American Legion team, along with working as a bartender at Canter's Inn. That never lasted for long as farming and ranching was in his blood, so back to the farm at Red Bird they went.

   Ward often told the story of taking the census, riding all over the back country of Waha and to the Salmon River on Louise's horse "Rocky." They covered a lot of miles. He made about $400 and that was a lot of money at that time.

   They left the farm in 1946 and bought the White Pine Bar in Weippe. It was sold in 1948 when they moved to Orofino. They were later divorced.

   In 1951, Ward married Shirley Anthony and took in five kids. A son was born to Ward and Shirley, Ward (Jack) Lee Jr. Shirley died in March 1961.

   He married Betty Lindstrom in 1963 with a family of seven. She passed away in 1992 at Nezperce. Later Ward moved to St. Maries and lived there for 10 years with his daughter Sharon. He and Sharon enjoyed hunting Floodwood together, camping and fishing, as well as raising a garden.

   When Ward knew his days were getting shorter, he moved to Woodland to spend time with his son, Jack. His health got worse and he entered the nursing home in Grangeville.

   Ward loved his grandchildren, which included grandsons Dee Peterschick of Plaza, WA, Richard Priebe of Deary, Alton Crousser Jr. of Portland, OR, Jess Matthes of Weippe, Wade Matthes of Elk River, and Danny, Jim and David Frost; granddaughters include Louise, Bobbie and Anita, all of the Portland area, Gay of Walla Walla,  WA and Pearl of Emida.

   He had a good time fishing and hunting with them. He loved his step grandkids and was "Gramp" to all of them. He got real proud of his firstborn great-great-grandchildren.

   Surviving are his daughters, Marvel Lee Peterschick of Plaza, Barbara Jean Carr of Orofino and Sharon Louise Lindstrom of St. Maries; one son, Ward Lee Frost Jr. of Woodland; 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; plus lots of step-grandkids.

   With Ward's long life, he had friends far and wide. He loved to tell a good story! He will be greatly missed along with the wonderful stories he told through the years.

   At his request, no services are planned. A family gathering was conducted at Solders Meadow, one of Ward's favorite places, on Sept. 17.

Louise W. Leendertsen, 89, Palouse

   Louise W. Leendertsen, a resident of Palouse, WA, passed away Saturday evening, Oct. 1, 2011, at Pullman Regional Hospital. She was born Dec. 12, 1921, at Palouse to Diedrich and Alma Kelm Kammeyer. She was 89.

   Mrs. Leendertsen attended Palouse schools and graduated from Palouse High School in 1939. She later attended Washington State University and received a bachelor's of science degree in bacteriology.

   Louise interned at St. Luke's Hospital in Spokane for one year in medical technology. She later worked for medical clinics in Spokane.

   She married Donald G. Leendertsen Dec. 3, 1946, at Palouse. The couple moved to Tacoma for a few years then she returned to Palouse with her husband and operated the Leendertsen family farm. Louise, a homemaker most of her life, also worked for the USDA at Washington State University in animal research for 25 years. The couple retired from farming in 1980. Mr. Leendertsen died in 2008.

   Louise was a member of the Divine Savior Lutheran Church in Pullman, the Whitman County Historical Society and Palouse Garden Club. She served on the Council on Aging, the Palouse Community Building committee, and was an officer and caretaker of the grounds at the Perkins House in Colfax.

   Survivors include two sons, John Leendertsen and his wife Shirley of Palouse, and Richard Leendertsen and his wife Nancy of Hanford, CA; two daughters, Diane Baldwin and her husband Bruce of Jasper, TN and Donna Lowary and her husband Roy of Orofino; as well as eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

   A private family graveside service for was conducted Oct. 5 at the Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse, with the Rev. Douglas Scherschel officiating. Afterwards a memorial service for all her friends took place at the Divine Savior Lutheran Church, 620 N.E. Stadium Way, Pullman. Viewing was conducted Oct. 4 at Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse for family and friends.

   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in Louise's name be given to the Palouse Community Center building fund, P.O. Box 23, Palouse, WA 99161; or to the Divine Savior Lutheran Church in Pullman.

Rob Richardsen, 71, Orofino

   Rob Richardsen, Orofino, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. He was 71.

   Cremation has taken place and there will no service. Arrangements are pending with Malcom’s Brower-Wann Funeral Home of Lewiston.

Stephen Douglas Pruitt, 58, Hailey

   Stephen Douglas Pruitt, 58, of Hailey died Monday, Oct. 3, 2011 at his home in Hailey.

Henry Leroy (Roy) Clay, 84, Orofino

   Henry Leroy (Roy) Clay, longtime resident of Orofino, passed away Friday, Sept. 23, 2011 at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino after a sudden and unexpected illness. He was 84. His children were with him at his bedside when the good Lord called him home.  

   Roy was born in Lewiston on Jan. 22, 1927 to William F. Clay and Marcelle Nadine Hengen. He was the oldest of three children. The family relocated to Portland during his High School years where he worked in the shipyards learning various trades and skills.  After graduating from Franklin High School in Portland he attended Oregon State University in Corvallis studying engineering. 

   Roy married Rose Marie Lenz Dec. 28, 1947.  Having missed Idaho, Roy and Rose moved to Orofino where he worked in the Orofino Creamery.  Roy also put his skills to work in the construction field where he built and remodeled many homes, including his own which he lived in at the time of his death.   In 1957 Roy purchased the Fountain in Orofino and eventually decided to remodel it, renaming it the Ponderosa Restaurant. It later became the Ponderosa Restaurant and Brass Rail and is a thriving business today.  On Nov. 10, 2002 Roy lost his wife and best friend of 55 years.

   Roy leaves behind his most precious gift of all, his three children who were the center of his life; Katherine (Kathy) Hanson and her husband Larry, Lucinda (Cindy) Freeman and her husband Fenton, and Michael H. Clay and his wife Sandy all of Orofino. 

   Other survivors of the family include seven grandchildren, Jeff Hanson, Boise, Janelle Burns, Portland, OR, Rachell Larsen, Orofino, Stephanie Craner, Palmer, AK, Nikki Anderson, Orofino, Hope Coleman, Orofino and Corey Medley, Orofino and eleven great-grandchildren.  Roy also leaves behind a half-brother, Alan Hengen, a half-sister Joyce Hanson and a step-sister Arlene Snowden.

   Roy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Rose; brothers, Tom and Don Clay and half-brother James Hengen.

   Throughout the years, Roy established friends all over the Northwest, many of them high ranking politicians who often sought advice from Roy regarding local issues. Roy cared about his community and cared even more for the people who lived in Orofino.

   To help make a difference, he ran for City Council in 1970 and won.  In 1974 he ran for Mayor and served twelve years as the Chief Elected Official of Orofino.  After a break in Public Service, he was asked to fill a vacancy on the City Council which he accepted.  He subsequently won reelection and was running for the City Council again at the time of his death.  Between being Mayor and his tenure on the City Council, he served a total of 28 years as a public servant.  The only thing he cherished more was his family, his business at the Ponderosa and his love of flying.  Oh, how he loved to fly.

   Roy served as President of the Orofino Chamber of Commerce as well as President of the North Idaho Chamber of Commerce (NICC). The NICC is a non-partisan organization that has enormous influence with the Idaho Legislature. He believed in standing up and making his voice heard, especially if proposed legislation impacted local government or private sector businesses. Throughout the years he was asked to run for the State Legislature but declined.  He remained nonpartisan because he felt he could better serve his community and business environment without taking heated sides.

   Roy received many awards throughout his lifetime.  Other than his children and family, he was proud of his work trying to ameliorate the jurisdictional differences between the Nez Perce Tribe and many public entities in North Central Idaho. 

   As a result of his dedication and perseverance, Harvard University awarded him an Executive Leadership Certificate.  As a result, he and three other individuals from North Central Idaho were asked to speak before the Harvard Law School, the Harvard Business School, Harvard Faculty and the Students during a week-long speaker tour relating to conflict resolution.  What Roy didn’t know was that there were world renown professionals from all over the globe in attendance looking for new strategies dealing with conflict.  They couldn’t figure out what was working in North Central Idaho.  It was a very positive week where he and his group showed extraordinary leadership.

   Final services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 30 at the Best Western Lodge in Orofino.  Pine Hills Funeral Home in Orofino is in care of arrangements. Burial will take place in Lewiston at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens at 2:30 p.m.

Elvita Judd, 90, Fraser

   Elvita Judd passed away Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011 at age 90 of age related causes.  Born Anna Elvita Green on July 23, 1921 in Blaine, KS, she was the 13th child of James and Josephine Green. 

   Elvita moved to the Fraser area in 1939 where she met Claud R. Judd. They were married Sept. 20, 1941 and raised five children together. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary before Claud passed away in 2007. 

   In their early life together, Elvita was a mother and homemaker while Claud worked at Schmidt's lumber mill and helped his father farm. Later, they took over the family homestead and became life long farm people. After retiring they remained living there.

   Elvita was very active in the local community: she belonged to the Fraser Ladies Get Together Club, Clearwater County Homemaker Extension Club, Clearwater Valley Hospital Auxiliary, and was the Fraser News reporter for the Clearwater Tribune for many years; she was a 60 year member of the Fraser Grange; she was a leader in the Fraser Boosters 4-H club for 50 years.

   In 2001 Elvita was inducted into the Idaho 4-H Hall of Fame; she was a good cook and known in the community for her pies and in 1968 was chosen Clearwater County Homemaker of the year. She also received numerous awards at the Clearwater County fairs. 

   While Claud served in the Idaho Legislature, she was a member of the Idaho Legisladies group. She was appointed by then Governor Andrus to serve for three days in place of then Senator McLaughlin.

   Elvita took pride each year in her beautiful flower garden and had a big vegetable garden which provided canned food for the family. She enjoyed playing cards and hosting people for dinners and gatherings. She was an active member of Our Lady of the Woodland Catholic Church in Pierce. Elvita was a hard worker, very good mother, and loved spending time with her family.

   She was preceded in death by her parents, 12 siblings; husband Claud, and son Melvin. Survivors include sons Larry (Cindy) Judd and Don (Sharon) Judd of Lewiston, Howard (Diane) Judd of Coeur d'Alene and daughter Loretta Judd of Spokane.  Elvita is also survived by grandchildren Dave, Toni, David, Cara, Kristin, Leanne, Julie, Brian, Raina, Matt, Brett and Scott and 12 great-grandchildren.

   Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28 at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino. Burial will follow at the Fraser Cemetery and a potluck dinner will be at the Fraser Community Center afterwards.

Eldon I. Hutchins, 90, Lewiston

   Eldon I. Hutchins was born Jan. 29, 1921, at Tofield, Alberta, Canada, to Loid and Maud Hutchins, who were United States citizens. He was the youngest of nine children, and was one of a very limited number of people who could legally claim dual citizenship. He passed away on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at his home in Lewiston, surrounded by his family. He was 90.

   He married Lela Jean Wilson on July 19, 1941, at Lewiston, and they began their married life in Seattle, WA where he was employed.  They celebrated their 67^th anniversary prior to her passing in 2008. They have been described as a dynamic couple who had a zest for life and adventure.

   Eldon enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943. During the time he spent on board the transport ship to India, he and three other men formed a quartet and entertained the troops onboard as well as for many USO shows.  He served in the China-Burma-India Theatre during WWII. 

   He was an Air Electrical Specialist in the 381^st Air Squadron and was stationed in Tespir, India, in the Upper Asam Valley, where he was responsible for maintaining all electrical systems on base, as well as all airplanes using the base during the war.  He was honorably discharged from service in 1946 and returned to Weippe where he worked in the woods as a logger.

   He owned the Weippe Restaurant and Service Station, was a partner in H & W Mercantile, owned General Sales & Service in Weippe & Kamiah, and built and operated the first television cable systems in Headquarters, Pierce, Weippe, Kamiah, and Nezperce in the early days of TV.

   He was involved in community affairs. He and his family spent five summers in Alaska commercial Salmon fishing.  After the fishing season ended, they spent the rest of the summer making wild life and adventure movies.

   During the winter months, he would travel throughout the western states with film lectures in the Armchair Adventure Series. His movie, Land of the Midnight Sun was shown on PBS, and he had pictures and articles published in the Alaska Sportsman and Outdoor Life. He worked at Schmidt's Mill, drove lumber truck for Hutchins Brother's Lumber Company, and from 1973 to 1992 owned mills in Weippe, Calder, and Fernwood, ID, as well as Salmo, British Columbia, where he produced a variety of cedar products and lumber.

   He was an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

   After losing his vision in his late seventies, he was able to devote more time to his lifelong passion for writing stories and poetry. He published four books, including poetry, old time stories, and had a fifth one almost ready for publication.

   Since 2000, he lived with his daughter, Leann, who was constantly there for him day and night. With all of the hardships he experienced with his blindness and illness, he never once complained or uttered a harsh word.

   He is survived by his three children, Jeannie (Robert) Hafer of Grangeville, Phillip (Joann) Hutchins of Kennewick, WA, and Leann (Frank) Norris of Lewiston, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Alice (Gordon) Hueth of Weippe, and brother-in-law, Donald (Eileen) Wilson of Lewiston, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. 

   He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and eight siblings.

   The family wishes to thank Dr. Jamie Mackay whose kindness and care, over and above what was required, made his life so much better in his final years. 

   A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 1, at 1:30 p.m. at the Lewiston Seventh-day Adventist Church with a graveside service at the Weippe Cemetery at 4 p.m. A potluck dinner will follow at 4:30 p.m. at the Weippe IOOF Hall hosted by the Rebekah Lodge.

James Melvin Buchanan, 80, Kingston

   James Melvin Buchanan, 80, of Kingston passed away Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011 at the family home in Kingston.

   He was born April 26, 1931 at Somers, MT. James grew up in Nine Mile, MT; he attended and graduated from the Alberton High School of Montana in 1949.

   In 1953, James entered the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. After serving in the armed forces, James moved and lived in Orofino, and then in 1976, he moved to the Silver Valley.

   James married Roberta Ann Richardson on Feb. 4, 1977 at Kellogg. Roberta passed away in 2006.

   James had served as a rock crusher operator/mechanic; he worked throughout the Northwest including Idaho and Washington. James had helped to build the Dworshak Dam of Idaho from start to finish.

   James was a member of the International Operating Engineers Union for fifty plus years. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. In later years, James was a die-hard Seattle Mariners fan; he loved to watch and talk baseball and tell hunting and fishing stories.

   James is survived by three step-children Blaine and his wife Patty Richardson of Wallace, Colleen Heinig of Tulsa, OK, and Wade and his wife Paula Richardson of Tulsa, OK; four grandchildren Jennifer and her husband Riley Chipman of Stilwater, OK, Elizabeth Heinig of Moscow, Morgan and her husband Josh Herriman of Collinsville, OK and Franz Heinig of Coeur d’ Alene.

    James was preceded in death by an infant daughter, two sons, Dicky and Larry Buchanan, his parents; his wife Roberta and a son-in-law Lewis Heinig.

   Graveside services were held on Friday, Sept. 23, at 11 a.m. at the Chewelah Memorial Park of Chewelah, WA with Pastor Don White officiating. A family gathering of family and friends took place following the service.

Helen L. Anderson, Troy, 87

   Helen L. Anderson of Troy died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011 at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow, surrounded by her family. She was 87.

   Helen was born June 10, 1924 at Nez Perce to George and Kathryn Schlader. She grew up and attended school at Orofino, graduating from high school there.

   Viewing will be at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow on Friday, Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Moscow with burial to follow at the Moscow Cemetery. A reception and luncheon will be at St. Mary's Family Center following the graveside service.

   The family suggests memorials be made to the Troy Ambulance Fund.

Lester Steward, 47, Orofino

   Lester Franklin Steward, Orofino, passed away Monday, Sept. 19, 2011 at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino. He was taken from us with our dad and younger brother Timothy beside him leading him into the arms of heaven. He was 47.

   He was born Oct. 21, 1963 in Orofino to Vena and Bill Steward. He graduated from Orofino High School in 1983 and from Lewis-Clark State College as a computer drafter in 2000, acquiring a job with Cuddy and Associates immediately thereafter.

   He took all his tasks seriously and showed diligence and pride in every one ensuring they met all their deadlines. He was a precise draftsman, loving his job and co-workers.

   Lester is survived by his mother Vena Steward, brothers Billy and wife Chris, Ken, Ron and Jon; sisters, Dena Rose and Tracia Young.; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He took special moments with each one of them giving them all cherished memories and loved making each one feel as if they were his favorite.

   He will be forever be loved and missed while he walks in heaven with all our loved ones, dad and Timmy by his side and his aunts and uncles and grandparents holding him in their comfort.

   We love you Lester and we’re so grateful to call you our brother.

Leroy A. Altmiller, 76, Lewiston

   Leroy A. Altmiller, longtime resident of Lewiston, passed away Friday, Sept. 16, 2011 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston after a long struggle with cancer. He was 76.

   Leroy was born in Ahsahka on Oct. 9, 1934 to Albert and Ruth Altmiller. He was the oldest of four children.

   He spent his youth working in the woods and exploring the North Fork of Clearwater River. He graduated from Orofino High School, where he lettered in boxing, baseball, football and track.

   Leroy met his future wife, Janice Maxwell, when he was nine years old, on a trip to visit his cousin. When Leroy returned from his service in the Marine Corps during the Korean War; the two married in 1955 and moved to Bremerton, WA, where they welcomed their oldest son, Jon.

   They soon moved back to Kamiah, where Leroy served in local law enforcement as an officer and then, later, as Chief of Police. There, they welcomed their second son, Jerry. The family moved to Headquarters and then later, Orofino, after Leroy was elected Clearwater County Sheriff and served for 10 years.

   The family then moved to Lewiston, where Leroy acted as Security Director of Potlatch Corporation for almost 20 years. He was a respected member of the law enforcement community nationwide and is remembered as a just, strong man.

   He loved the outdoors and spent as much time as he could, fishing, hunting, and camping. He shared his enthusiasm and knowledge of archery and guns with many in the community, running an archery shop after retirement and offering hunting advice.

   Leroy was a master-class competitive shooter and taught many law enforcement officials and young shooters (including all three of his granddaughters) this skill. Leroy was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather.

   He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and active in the Knights of Columbus until his health began to decline.

   He is survived by his siblings, Darla Alteneder, Sharon Walk, and Robert Altmiller as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

   He is also survived by his wife of 56 years, Janice Maxwell Altmiller; daughters-in-law, Jean Cleto Altmiller and Carolyn Altmiller Copeland; granddaughters Amy Altmiller Eddy (husband Kevin Eddy), Jennifer Altmiller Kaufman (husband Joe Kaufman), Amanda Altmiller Wilkins (husband Jerry Wilkins) and grandson Jacob Denny.

   He is also survived by his great-grandchildren Noah, Kate, and Glory Eddy, Sam and Natalie Kaufman, and Jolie Altmiller. Another great-granddaughter, Peyton Wilkins, is due to arrive near what would have been Leroy’s 77^th birthday.

   He is preceded in death by his two sons, Jon and Jerry Altmiller. We know the three of them are having a joyful reunion up there in Heaven.

   A vigil will be held 6:30 p.m, Friday, Sept. 23 at St. James Catholic Church and a memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, also at St. James. Memorial gifts may be made to American Cancer Society or the charity of the giver’s choice.

Ellen Wisdom, 79, Weippe

   Ellen Wisdom, long time resident of the Weippe area, passed away Friday, Sept. 16, 2011 at Providence’s St. Mary’s Medical Center in Walla Walla, WA, with her children at her side. She was 79.

   She was born Aug. 10, 1932 to Jess and Marie Stout in Twin Falls.

   Ellen married Glen Jones Aug. 7, 1947. They had six children. This marriage later ended in divorce. She married Jake Wisdom June 1977. She became widowed December 1991.

   She was a member of the Rebecca’s Lodge in Weippe serving as Noble Grand and Chaplin in 1990. She was nominated and received the Decoration of Chivalry by her sisters of the Rebecca’s.

   Ellen worked as a school bus driver for the Weippe School District. She also worked with children with learning disabilities. She assisted in the dietary program for the first kindergarten class in Weippe.

   Ellen is survived by her children, Connie and Steve Spencer and Kathy and Rick McIntosh, all of Weippe, Steve and Melody Jones and Troy and Amy Jones, all of Walla Walla, WA, Dawn Thompson, Waldport, OR, Allen and Viola Wisdom, Grangeville, Ynonne and Jim Logan, Hermiston, OR, Ron and Connie Wisdom, Lewiston, Dan and Grace Grigsby, Irigon, OR and Pauline and Jerry Hill and Marline Sanders, all of Boise. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, which she loved.

   She was preceded in death by her parents, Jess and Marie Stout and two children, Debbie Jones and Arthur Jones Jr.

   Memorial services will be held Saturday, Sept. 24 at 11 a.m. at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino.

Jean M. Veltri, 81, Hayden, ID

   Jean M. Veltri, Hayden, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011 in Hayden, following a long battle with numerous health problems. She was 81.

   She was born on Sept. 1, 1930 to Glen and Elaine Hill at Tekoa, WA. She was raised and schooled in the Chewelah, WA area.

   Jean met and fell in live with Ray F. Veltri of Priest River. They married in Thompson Falls, MT in 1946 and were married 42 years.

   In 1966 they moved to Pierce. Ray started working at Jaype Mill and Jean started a career selling Avon. Jean received many awards from Avon. She was known for the many miles and many years of walking up and down Whispering Pines hill, going door to door selling Avon.

   For the last several years Jean has resided at Heritage Place in Coeur d’Alene, where she had established herself, made many good friends and loved it.

   Jean is fondly remembered for her talent in cooking Italian pastries and apple dumplings. Some of her hobbies were camping, hunting and fishing for Kokanee at the Dent and Grandad Bridge area. She will be missed dearly!

   She is survived by her children, daughter Kathy Gentry of Moore, Mitch and Diane Veltri of Spokane, WA, Colleen Bainbridge of Lewiston, Debbie Fitsgerald of Lewiston and Lonnie Veltri of Orofino, Brad Veltri of Martinsburg, WV; sisters, Penny Towles of Heron, MT, Barbara Fitzgerald, of Colwell, WA and brother, Spike Hill, of Springdale, WA and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

   Jean was preceded in death by her husband Ray F. Veltri and son Frank Veltri.

   Services will be held at Lewiston Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of North Idaho.

Eldon Hutchins, 90, Lewiston

   Eldon I. Hutchins, of Lewiston, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at home. He was 90. Arrangements are pending with Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home of Lewiston.

Gene T. Triplett, 84, Lewiston

   Gene died Friday, Sept. 9, 2011. He was born Oct. 9, 1926, to Leslie and Marie Triplett at home in Southwick. He was 84.

   The family lived in Southwick until his junior year. They then moved to Pierce, where he graduated from high school in 1944.

   Gene joined the U.S. Navy in 1944, serving two years on a naval destroyer during World War II.

   He married Delores Davis of Pierce and they divorced in 1972. He then married Donna Phillips in 1973.

   Gene worked in the woods and on log drives for Potlatch Forests Inc., living in logging camps until 1959, when he moved to Lewiston. He then went to work for Pacific Western Transportation and later started his own trucking business until retirement.

   He enjoyed spending time with his family, walking his dog, gardening, camping, visiting with friends, donating blood and was proud to be a World War II veteran.

   Survivors include his wife, Donna at their Lewiston home; three daughters, Linda and Joe Brownson of Lewiston, Donna and Lindsey Allers of Pierce, and Sandra and Rick Tomilson of Bremerton, WA.; stepdaughter, Vicky and Ken Andrews of Washougal, WA.; stepson, Todd and Vicky Phillips of Lewiston; his dog Sadie; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

   Gene was preceded in death by his parents; son Jim Triplett; grandson Travis Besst; step-daughter Lorinda Pierce; and two brothers, Gail and Charles Triplett.

   A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at the House of Faith, 2502 16th Ave., Lewiston.

Gary Stewart, 71, Weippe

   Gary James Stewart, of Weippe, died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011 at Clearwater Valley Hospital of sudden heart failure. He was 71.

   We lost our wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He touched lots of hearts in his lifetime.

   He was born Dec. 31, 1939 in Orofino to Stella and Leonard Stewart. He has five siblings, Beryl and (Hank) Spencer, Pierce, Leonard and (Janet) Stewart, Coeur d’Alene, Anita and (Bill) Lear, Peck, Neona and (John) Davis, Pierce and Richard and Judy Stewart, Lewiston. He has many nephews and nieces that love him very much. He would do anything for them.

   He married the love of his life Shirley Stout on May 13, 1966. They have two daughters, Betty and (John) Stinson, Pierce and Ronda and (Leo) Binder, Orofino; five grandchildren, Gary and Cheri Stewart, John Stinson, Brandon and Nikki Binder and five great-grandchildren, Jordon, Tyson, Jaimie, Alyssa and Leighton.

   Gary and Shirley lived at Grangemont for 32 years before moving to Weippe, where he lived at the time of his death. They spent 45 years together.

   He worked many different jobs in his lifetime. He enjoyed logging the most. He retired in 2002. He also enjoyed having the grandchildren around. He always called them his babies. He always made sure his family was taken care of even if it meant he went without.

   Gary loved to go camping, fishing, hunting, and riding his 4-wheeler and going on long rides with his sons-in-law and grandsons. He always called his grandsons by Hey #1 (Gary), Hey #2 (John), Hey #3 (Brandon).

   He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.

   Services for Gary will be Friday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. at the Weippe Community Hall with a potluck to follow. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. On Sunday, Sept. 25, the family will have a private celebration of Gary’s life to spread his ashes.

   I cried when you passed away, although I loved you dearly I couldn’t make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke my heart to prove to me He only takes the best.

Dad’s Gone Fishin’

   I went for a walk the morning after my dad passed away. The angels started to cry with me as I walked, I wasn’t alone. I felt strong arms around me, it was the Lord and He said to me don’t cry my child, your dad is with me now and we’re going fishing. Ralph Kinnick, 84, Orofino

   Ralph Kinnick of Orofino, formerly of Kooskia, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011 at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation in Orofino. He was 84.

   A graveside service was conducted Sept. 17 at Tahoe Mountain Rest Cemetery near Kooskia with Rev. Paul Baldwin officiating. Trenary Funeral Home of Kooskia is handling arrangements.

Randall Lee McHaffie, Orofino

   Randall Lee McHaffie, died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, at his home in Orofino. He was 64. Memorial services will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. in Orofino at Big Eddy Marina.

David W. Vaughn, Weippe, 49

   David Wayne Vaughn of Weippe bravely passed away Monday, Sept. 5, 2011 at the age of 49, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

   Dave was born Oct. 3, 1961 to Carol Shelley in Spokane, WA and later took his stepfather Jerry’s last name of Vaughn. He went to high school in Touchet, WA where he excelled in football and rodeo.

   Dave met his wife Peggy Wilson in May of 1980 in Walla Walla, WA. They were married Oct. 27, 1984 at the College Place Presbyterian Church. They later had two wonderful sons, Cody and Colton.

   Dave’s love of the outdoors and animals drew him to a life as a working cowboy. After working in a few ranches in Washington and Oregon, he and his family moved to Imnaha, OR where he successfully managed the Hubbard Ranch for many years.

   Later he and his family settled in Weippe, where he pursued his hobby of woodworking and opened Mountain Treasures Cabinetry and Woodworking.

   Dave was preceded in death by his brother Scott Faler. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Vaughn of Weippe; his son Cody Vaughn and daughter-in-law Tanya Fiddler-Vaughn of Adel, OR; his son Colton Vaughn of Weippe; his mother and stepfather, Carol and Jerry Vaughn of Touchet, WA; brother Cory Vaughn and his family of Milton Freewater, OR; mother-in-law Wilma Wilson of Walla Walla; and many sisters and brothers-in-law, nephews and nieces throughout the northwest.

   Dave will be severely missed by family and friends. A BBQ potluck celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. at his home in Weippe.

Sister Mary Petronilla Lieser, OSB

April 1, 1920 - Sept. 7, 2011

   "Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Jesus!"

   Mary Petronilla Lieser, OSB was born into eternal life Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, at 3:55 p.m. She took her last breath among her Sisters of the Monastery of St. Gertrude, including her biological sister, Sister Bernard Lieser. Sister Petronilla will be remembered as a woman of profound faith and passionate devotion.

   Born Cecelia Margaret, to Theresia Hemmesch and Joseph Lieser in Zion Township, Paynesville, Minn., she was one of three girls from her family to enter St. Gertrude's. She made her First Profession on June 29, 1940. From then until 1984 she worked in the kitchen and laundry at Our Lady of Consolation Hospital, as school cook at St. Paul's School in Nampa, at St. Gertrude's Academy in Cottonwood and as head of the dietary department at St. Mary's Hospital in Cottonwood. When she left the Academy the students dedicated the 1965 annual to her.

   In 1984, Sister Petronilla was missioned to serve in parish ministry; first at St. Rita's Parish in Kellogg, and then at St. Theresa's Parish in Orofino. At both parishes she was able to express her creativity and love of people through outreach for Habitat for Humanity, St. Vincent de Paul, and home and prison ministries. A near-fatal stroke in 1994 barely slowed her down. After retiring to the Monastery in Cottonwood, she ministered to inmates at the North Idaho Correctional Institution.

   "Reaching out to people is a good thing about being a nun," she had said. "To bring joy and laughter to others, to help them fall in love with the church and God, to be there to pray and play with them - this is God's good work."

   Until 2003, she was able to visit her family in Minnesota. Of course card playing, both there and at St. Gertrude's, was an important recreation for her and up to the last she accepted a dance when the occasion called for it.

   Her Golden Jubilee took place during 1990 and on July 27, 2010, she celebrated 70 years of Monastic Profession. Prioress Sister Clarissa Goeckner spoke immediately after Sister Petronilla renewed her promises. "You have been a mentor, guide and wisdom figure among us. Thanks for your determination, your commitment to the community, your dedication to ministry and your spirit of gratitude." The ceremony concluded with the community exclaiming the words that had become Sister Petronilla's signature: "Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Jesus!"

   Sister Petronilla is survived by the Benedictine Sisters of the Monastery of St. Gertrude; her sister, Sister Bernard Lieser; a brother, Bernard Lieser; and numerous nieces and nephews.

   The Vigil Service was held Tuesday and the Mass of the Resurrection was held Wednesday at the Monastery of St. Gertrude in Cottonwood.

Amanda Shelley, 54, Orofino

   Amanda Shelley, Orofino, passed away Friday, Sept. 2, 2011. She was 54.

   She is survived by her husband, Harley, their three children, six grandchildren, two sisters and a brother.

   Amanda was a wonderful mother and wife. She was a woman of God who loved Jesus with all her heart. She raised three children who love Jesus and are all happily married to spouses who love and serve the Lord.

   They are all raising their children with God at the center of their families.

   Amanda had been fighting breast cancer for 10 years. She died fighting it, refusing to give up all hope. In the end, the miracle of healing that her family and friends prayed for was not answered in the way we had hoped, but we are all comforted to know that she is now whole, pain free and “healed” in the arms of our beloved savior, Jesus.

   Services will be held Thursday, Sept. 8 at 2 p.m. at Sunnyside Cemetery.

Sharon Sue Smith Weber, 57, Lewiston

   Sharon passed on to be with loved ones in heaven on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011. She was 57.

   She was born May 5, 1954, in Pomeroy to Ed and Sue Smith. She lived in Headquarters for five years before moving to Lewiston, where the family lived for eight years and then they returned to Headquarters.

   She attended grade school in Lewiston, Headquarters and Pierce, and high school at Timberline High School in Pierce. Sharon went on to complete two years at Walla Walla Community College, Clarkston Center, majoring in computer technology.

   Sharon fell in love with Jim Weber and they were married Sept. 23, 1972. They lived in various places of the region and settled in Lewiston.

   She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Clarkston, WA.

   Sharon loved spending all the time that she could with her grandchildren, caring for them and making things for them. She was also very musical. Being outdoors, camping, riding four-wheelers, and picking mushrooms and huckleberries were among a few of her favorite things to do - even though she never made it back to the car with many berries.

   Surviving Sharon are her husband, Jim Weber of Lewiston; daughter, Margie and Sean, and Jamie Weber; son, Josh and Mandi Weber; parents, Ed and Sue Smith; brothers, Ted and Lorrie Smith, and Dan and Terri Smith; eight grandchildren, Rusty, Janie, Kelsey, James, Sammy, Abbi, Graci and Jaron; and many nieces and nephews.

   "Sissy" was a one-of-a-kind; special person and we will all miss her dearly.

   A memorial service was conducted Sept. 3 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1107 14th St. in Clarkston, with the Rev. David Naumann officiating.

Daniel G.R. Shreve, 67, Orofino

   Daniel G.R. Shreve, Orofino, passed away Aug. 23, 2011 from complications of an aneurysm at St. Joseph Medical Regional Center in Lewiston. He was 67.

   He was born June 4, 1944 in Long Beach, CA to Bonnie and Roy Shreve. He was the second child of five children.

   The family lived in California until Dan was 11. Then they moved to Lynnwood, WA, where he finished high school and then attended at a junior college for a year.

   He loved to learn new things and spent a great deal of time doing research on whatever it was he was interested in at the time.

   Dan wore many hats, as he was most of the time working two jobs. He started working at an early age. The most rewarding job was being a school bus driver in District #171. He loved the kids that he took to and from school, and those that he took to sports games.

   He also drove the ski bus, the fun bus and the bus for the 6th grade forestry tour. He was an amazing bus driver. Many have said that they where dumbfounded at his ability to park a school bus, where most wouldn’t even try to park a pickup.

   Dan married Tracie (Zipse) on Dec. 28, 1984 and they lived in the Orofino area since 1992. They have a daughter, Kendall.

   He was preceded in death by his parents, Bonnie and Roy Shreve, and his brother Richard Shreve.

   Dan is survived by his wife Tracie at the family home and daughter Kendall and husband Josh Gates and granddaughter Brooklyn Gates of Nampa. Also surviving him are his brother Bruce and twin sisters Royden and Linda as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.

   Cremation and a remembrance of life took place on Aug. 27.

Charles “Scott” Lefferts, 49, Weippe

   Charles “Scott” Lefferts, of Weippe, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011 at the age of 49. He got his strength and courage to fight the battle of cancer from his Lord.  He never lost his sense of humor during this time.

   Scott was born Dec. 17, 1961 to Charles and Judith Lefferts.  He was raised in Weippe.

   On July 26, 1986 he married Kathy Olson. They loved each other and were “stuck” together like glue.

   Scott loved to hunt, fish, listen to music and spend many special hours with his family and friends.

   Scott is survived by his wife Kathy; his mother Judith; sisters, Juanita and husband Wayne Gash, and Tracy and husband Todd Stuffing; nephew Derek Reagan and niece Darci Reagan.

   When Scott married Kathy his family grew to include Billy, Jolean, and Karen Olson, John and Sue Wyatt, Nikki and Chad Towslee, Kacey, Chris, and Olivia Cagle and Mindy, Fred, and Wyatt Michael Scheck.

   He was preceded in death by his dad, Charlie Lefferts, grandparents, Elsie Allen, John Lefferts, Cecil Allen, Irene Diebel, Ernie Diebel, and father-in-law Billy Olson.

   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Weippe Wesleyan Church.

Esther Holly Kirkland, 91, Orofino

    Esther Holly Kirkland, Orofino, passed away Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011 at Clearwater Health & Rehab in Orofino. She was 91. Esther was born to Ralph and Eliza Kirkland on Orcas Island, WA Nov. 17, 1919 and was the 10th of 13 children. Later she moved to Warm Beach, WA.

    She worked in nursing homes in Stanwood and Camano Island in Washington. Esther became a licensed practical nurse, later moving to Walla Walla, WA and then to Orofino.

    She is survived by her sister, Eunice Kempt of Kirkland, WA; brother Dan Kirkland and his wife Shirley of Tacoma, WA; her daughter Lois Galloway and her husband Leonard; grandsons Larry Galloway and his wife Robin of Walla Walla; Leonard Galloway Jr. and his wife Melonie of Yakima, WA; granddaughters Lacey Galloway of Walla Walla and Leia Galloway of Yakima and many nieces and nephews.

    A memorial Service will be held in Walla Walla at a later date.

Daniel Shreve, 67, Orofino

   Daniel G.R. Shreve of Orofino died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. He was 67.

Barbara McManamon, 89, Kennewick

   Barbara May McManamon of Kennewick, WA went to be with our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011 in Richland, WA with her son by her side. She was 89.

   Barbara was born May 17, 1922 in Harrison. She was a longtime resident of Orofino, until 2002, when she moved to Kennewick to be closer to her family.

   Barbara served two terms as Clearwater County Treasurer in the 1950's and also was the Administrator for the Orofino Convalescent Home in the 70's, until she retired in 1981.

   She was preceded in death by her daughter Lynda and three brothers.

   Survivors include her sister Jeannine McFarland and husband Tom, brother Dennis Wood and wife Patricia along with her son Douglas and wife Lisa; and grandchildren Dallas, Dillon, Carra and Dalton.

   A graveside service will be held at the Woodland Cemetery in St. Maries in the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 26.

Shirley Harrington, 75, Orofino

   Shirley Irene Harrington, 75, Orofino, passed away Friday, Aug. 12, 2011 at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation Center, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Cancer may have won the battle, but Shirley won the war. Cancer could never change who she was.

   She was born Sept. 18, 1935 to Joseph William and Katherine Ann Kaberline in Denver, CO. She spent her early years in Colorado before the family moved to Fresno, CA.

   Shirley married Albert Senior in October of 1955. The family moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1962 where she worked at Jorgensen Steel. The marriage ended in divorce in 1973. She continued to work and raise her son and daughter.

   She married Bert Harrington in December of 1982. He convinced her to retire and travel with him. They settled in the area where he was raised. When she arrived in Orofino she fell in love with the river, the valley and the people.

   They operated Vacationland Hotel and RV Park on Highway 12. In 1995 they converted the park to Riverview Estates, a senior citizen’s mobile home park and remodeled the hotel into a duplex. They continued to operate the business until it was purchased to enlarge the neighboring canoe camp site in 2002.

   Bert passed away in May of 2005 and she decided to move into Brookside Landing. Because of her declining health, she moved to Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation in March of 2008. She dearly loved her “family” there. They became her children and grandchildren of her heart. She made the decision to spend her last days there surrounded by people that loved her as much as she loved them.

   She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bert and great-grandson Austin Stump; great-granddaughter Prudence Watson and nephew James Dukes.

   She is survived by her son Joseph (Cindy) Senior of Kingman, AZ; daughter Christina Lymberopoulos (Mike Lee) of Orofino; brothers and sisters, George (Jan), Ted (Louanne), David (Lori), Don (Debbie), Jayne Dukes, La Jean Pendergrass of California and Joyce (Rex) Pevehouse of Orofino. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

   Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 20 at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel and Crematory at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery and a potluck at the senior center at 12:30 p.m.

Juanita E. Levitt, 82, Great Falls, MT

   Juanita E. Levitt, Great Falls, MT (former Ahsahka resident) died of natural causes Aug. 23, 2010 at a local hospital. She was 82.

   She was born June 13, 1928 to Elsie (Stalnaker) and James Dawin Levitt in Republic, WA. The family moved to Ahsahka where she was raised and educated, graduating from Orofino High School in 1945. She attended Kinman Business College in Spokane, WA.

   Juanita married Ray Stuckenschneider in Spokane in 1946, and together they had five children.

   They moved to Cascade, MT and then Warm Springs, MT, where she worked as an administrative secretary n a doctor’s office. They moved to Missoula, MT and she was employed by Western Montana Clinic before going to work for the University of Montana Bookstore for two years.

   They family moved to Polson, MT where Juanita worked for a doctor and a dentist for four years. She worked for B&B Foods as a checker before leaving Polson for Moscow. She moved to Great Falls and began working for the City of Great Falls as deputy treasurer until retiring. She then moved to Billings, MT where she lived for eight years before returning to Great Falls in 1987.

   Juanita belonged to a square dancing club and traveled to various places to teach square and round dancing. She was an avid cat lover who loved her three cats. She designed and sewed matching dresses and square dancing clothes.

   Survivors include a son Paul Talisman of Loveland, CO; daughters Jody Kennedy, of Sandpoint, Laura Ann Horner and husband Bill of Sterling, AK, Patti Almond and husband Jon of Great Falls, MT and Michelle Gilchrist and husband Jim of Taft, TX; eight grandchildren, Doug, David, Scott, Jennifer, Apryl, Loren, Daniel and Jamie, and four great-grandchildren, Bailey, Libby, Harley and Haven.

   She was preceded in death by her former husband Ray Stuckenschneider, 1975; her parents; and step-father Joseph Wojciehowski.

   Juanita’s ashes were spread on Lower Ford Creek Road at the bridge with family from Sandpoint (daughter Jody); Great Falls, MT (daughter and husband Jon and Patti; granddaughter and husband Jennifer and Aaron; and cousins from Clarkston, WA, Arnie and LaDoris (Stalnaker) Brandt.

   Four trees were planted in mom’s (Juanita) honor and a white rose bush on the Stalnaker, now Bonaparte place.

Vaudus Helm, 84, Orofino

   Vaudus Helm passed away on Aug. 8, 2011 at home with her two daughters by her side.

   She was born Nov. 15, 1927 at Chester, ID to Oriah and Elsie Helm. She was raised on the farm with one brother and five sisters. Vaudus moved to Pocatello at age 17 to work on the railroad with two of her sisters during World War II.

   She married Ted Winters, the boy next door, on Feb. 28, 1947.  They moved to California so that Ted could work at the race track with her brother Mosier. They had a daughter, Donna, while living there.

   They returned to Chester to work on the family farm. A son, Curt and a daughter Teresa were born there. They later moved to Idaho Falls when Ted got a job there and raised their family there.

   Vaudus was a wonderful mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was the kind person who always put others before herself. She made the best fried chicken and homemade bread in the world.

   She was very ill for years but never complained, just enjoyed the time with her family and was thankful for the small pleasures in life. Her wonderful smile and special spirit will be missed very much.

   She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Delpha, Wanda, Naomi, Veva and Marcia, a brother Mosier; and a grandson, Roy Fonnesbeck.

   She is survived by daughters Teresa Van Kirk (Robert Van Kirk) and Donna Fonnesbeck (Dee Fonnesbeck), and son Curt Winters; five grandchildren, Andrea Fonnesbeck, Lyndee Aardema, Brittany Goetz, Sean Moen and Randy Pardini and three great grandchildren, Bradley, Ava and Ella.

   Services will held at the LDS Church on Friday Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. Interment will be at the Wells Bench Cemetery.

Robert Hohnstein, 79, Lewiston

   Robert Jett Hohnstein passed away peacefully on Friday Aug. 5, 2011 at Life Care Center in Lewiston of renal failure. He was 79.

   He was born at the family home at Elk Creek in Clearwater County on March 23, 1932 to Fredrick and Daisy May Laws. He was adopted as a child by Henry Hohnstein after his father's death. He was raised in Cardiff Spur and attended school in Pierce.

   He married June Ellen Knapton on Feb. 19, 1951 in Lewiston, ID. They made their family home in Cardiff Spur. They shared 36 years together and had six children. June passed away in February of 1987.

   Robert married Alysann Anderson in December of 1987. They continued to live in Cardiff and later moved to Lewiston. He worked for Potlatch in Head-quarters as a loader operator for 41 years until his retirement.

   He was an active member of The First Baptist Church of Pierce. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. After retirement he enjoyed buying, restoring and re-selling items at his yard sales. He liked riding his Schwinn Motor Scooter around Lewiston. He looked forward to visits with his family and friends.

   Robert is survived by his wife, Alysann of Lewiston; his children, Roger and Kyoko Hohnstein of Portland, Bob and Hildie Hohnstein of Lewiston, Susan and Jim Gustin of Orofino, Dianna and Mike Reece of Waitsburg, Rory Hohnstein of Clarkston, and Karen and Todd Wilson of Post Falls. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Yasuhiro Yamamoto, Ashley Reece, Wesley Hohnstein, Samamtha Gustin, Kasen and Kanyon Hohnstein, and Tyler, Jensen, and Jaxsen Wilson; a sister-in-law, Lillian Laws of Thompson Falls, and brother-in-law, Jim and Rose Knapton of Stites.

   He was preceded in death by his parents, wife June, brothers Doyle Laws, Wes Laws, John Laws and sister Esther Wilson.

   Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 11, at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. His graveside service will be held on Friday, Aug. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Pierce Cemetery.

   The services will be followed by a lunch and all those attending are invited to share.

Wade Harvey Nelsen, 77, Noxon, MT

Aug. 24, 1933 – Aug. 4, 2011

   Wade Harvey Nelsen, of Noxon, MT, passed away Aug. 4, 2011 at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, WA. He was 77.

   Born in Noxon, MT on Aug. 24, 1933, Wade was the only child of Harvey Nelsen and Isobel (Dodge) Nelsen. His parents divorced when he was young, and his mother remarried Ivan Rasmussen, so most of his childhood was spent living in different cities throughout the Northwest.

   Wade eventually returned to Noxon where he attended Noxon High School, and where he met his wife of 54 years, the late Faye (Rasmussen) Nelsen.

   Wade was a veteran of the U.S. Army and one of the best mechanics anyone has ever known. He had a passion for cars, pickups, and almost anything with an engine. Even when his career moved to heavy construction and concrete mixing plants for dams, he still called himself a mechanic.

   However, Wade’s career in building dams was the catalyst for his world travels. He and his wife, Faye carved out a home for their four children wherever it was that his job took him. They both shared a belief that family is always the priority so when he accepted a new job, his wife and children soon followed.

   Wade used his locations of employment to learn and discover the different cultures and what each area had to offer. He climbed through caverns in Carlsbad, New Mexico, explored pueblos in Santa Fe, toured the nuclear reservation in Richland, WA, went clamming on the Pacific Coast, learned Spanish in Venezuela, snorkeled with fish in Puerto Rico, visited old west towns in Arizona, rode the riverboats on the Mississippi, and sampled authentic Chinese food in China.

   But when he retired, he chose to live where he called home; Noxon, MT where he could tend his flowers, enjoy his birds, and work in his shop restoring his ’49 Ford. What a full life.

   Wade was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Francis Nelsen, and Ivan and Isobel Rasmussen; half brothers, Darryl Nelsen and Derbin Nelsen and his wife, Faye Nelsen.

   He is survived by his half brother, Neil Nelsen of St. John, WA; four children Jerry (Janis) Nelsen of Orofino, Terry (Teresa) Nelsen of Orofino, Susan (Ron) Stade of West Richland, WA and Sandra (Dave) Szambelan of Spokane, WA; as well as 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

   A memorial service for Wade is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13 at 3 p.m. (MST) at the cemetery in Heron, MT.

Clinton J. (Pink) Greene, 85, Peck

   C.J. (Pink) Greene, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, died at Clearwater Valley Hospital Sunday, July 31, 2011. She was 85.

   Pink was born July 25, 1926 to Clinton D. and Mable Arlouine Greene in Delta, UT.  He had three brothers and three sisters.

   He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and served in WWII in the Pacific.

   Pink married Betty Jo Hobdey May 3, 1947 in Hailey.  Together they raised four children.

   In 1952 they moved to the Peck area where he hauled logs with Betty’s father. He worked in the logging industry most of his life.  He and his brother Gerald (Hap) formed Greene Brothers Logging which later became Greene Logging.  His three sons Ben, Scott, and Speedy worked alongside him at times during his logging career as well as his wife Betty.  After his retirement, he remained active by driving truck and operating equipment for many local companies. 

   Pink was known far and wide for his keen sense of humor and never forgetting a joke. He always had a cartoon to show everyone tucked inside his Western shirt pocket.

   During his life he was well known at truck driving competitions; most often coming in 1^st place. He always gave anyone interested the opportunity to learn from his years of driving experience.  He was also a terrific mechanic and fabricator and could always be counted on to figure out how to make repairs – no matter how large or small.

   In 2002, he and Betty were chosen to serve as Grand Marshalls of the Clearwater County Fair and Lumberjack Days.  The community was so proud of their many contributions to the timber industry. 

   Pink had a keen memory of not just jokes and people; he also remembered each and every road and creek he had seen.  His love for all things outdoors included fishing, camping and boating.

   He is survived by his wife Betty at family home in Peck; sister Iona “Toots” Anderson of Wendell; children Ben and Jane Greene, Scott and Nancy Greene, Clinton A. (Speedy) Greene and Adele O’Leary, Rita Kaufman and Robert (Bob) Kaufman; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. 

   Pink was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Kenny, Duane and Hap and sisters DeEsta and Myrna.

   A celebration of life will be held at 3 pm on Friday, Aug. 5, at The Lodge at River’s Edge in Orofino. Internment will be at a later date for immediate family.

   The family suggests Memorial donations can be made to CVH Auxiliary or VFW Post 3396 in Orofino.

Osie Marie Anderson, 87, of Lewiston

   Osie Marie Anderson of Lewiston passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, with family by her side.  She was 87.

   Osie was born Nov. 30, 1923 in Leland to Emmett and Muriel Thornton. They moved to Lapwai in 1928 where she went 12 years of school graduating in 1941. In 1941 she moved to Pierce.

     On Nov. 5, 1945 she married Delmar Anderson at Vancouver, WA.  They lived in Weippe until 1951 when they moved to Headquarters. She went into the Unites States Post Office in 1969 and became Postmaster in 1977.  She retired in 1988 and they moved to Lewiston.

   Surviving Osie are her children and their spouses, son Denny and wife Rene Anderson of Headquarters, son Gary and wife Anna Anderson of Seattle, WA, daughter Darlene and her husband Bill Bolen of Weippe and daughter Bonnie and her husband Frank Allen of Lewiston. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren, as well as her sister-in-law, Mildred Johnson.

   Preceding Osie in death is her parents, her husband Delmar, her daughter Donna, her brother, and two sisters.

   A graveside service was held Aug. 2 at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens in Lewiston. A potluck was held afterwards.

Brenda Gail Snyder, 62, Moscow

   Brenda Gail Snyder, of Moscow, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2011 at her home in Moscow, of cancer, surrounded by her family and friends. She was 62.

   Brenda was born Dec. 16, 1948 to Clarence and Linita Donovan in San Diego, CA.

   She married Norman Dale Snyder on Dec. 9, 1978 and they spent many years traveling around the world while serving in the Navy.

   Brenda was very proud of her Native American heritage and loved Pow Wows and dances around the northwest.

   In July of 2009, Brenda was diagnosed with large cell cancer, but that didn’t stop her from living her life to the fullest. She loved being outside and working in her gardens, shopping and keeping her spirits high. She was very outgoing and will be greatly missed by all.

   She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Norman Dale; three daughters Noell and David, Destiny and Dennis and Dawn and Mike; seven grandchildren, Corey, Matt, Autum, Alex, Destiny, Damon and Saige; sister and best friend Donna and sisters Kris and Cheryl.

   She is also survived by many extended family that love her dearly and she’ll never be forgotten.

Marie Parks Wargi, 91, Kennewick, WA

   Marie Elene Parks Wargi, of Kennewick, WA, passed peacefully July 25 in Kennewick. She was 91.

   She was born near Cabri, Saskatchewan Canada and is the daughter of the late Clarence and Ella Mae Rugg. Marie moved to Peck with her family including six brothers and sisters in 1926 where she attended school and helped on the family farm.

   Marie married Clifford Parks June 1940 and they made their home on the farm at Central Ridge, later moving to the farm on the Cavendish Grade, where they raised four children, Judy (Link), Jim Parks, Jenifer (Rowland) and C Ray Parks.

   Marie attended and graduated from nursing school and became an LPN. She worked in the Orofino area for many years.

   After retirement Clifford and Marie moved to Peck, where Clifford passed away in 1983. In 1985 Marie married Ray Wargi and they resided near Peck, later moving to Lewiston. In 2010 Marie moved to Kennewick, WA to be near her children.

   Marie is survived by her husband Ray, who resides in Lewiston with his daughter; her four children; two step-children, Joan Hunter and Tom Wargi; sisters Jean Peer, Doris Harvey and Joyce Gould and brother, Wallace Rugg. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of whom she dearly loved.

   She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John and Clarence Rugg.

Marla Forsmann, 77, Kirkland, WA

   Marla Goffinet Forsmann was born Dec. 16, 1933 to Gordon and Elizabeth Goffinet in Orofino. She was raised in Peck and graduated from Orofino High School in 1951.

   She married Arnold Forsmann in 1956. They moved to Yakima, WA, then Seattle and returned to Peck when Arnold retired.

   When Arnold passed on she moved to Kirkland, WA to be with her only daughter and lived there until her death at age 77 on Wednesday, July 27, 2011.

   She enjoyed many crafts including gardening, crocheting, sewing, embroidery, crossword puzzles, picture puzzles and plastic canvas.  

   She is survived by her daughter, Janet of Kirkland, WA; brother, Donald Goffinet of Lewiston, brother, Virgil (Irene) Goffinet of Lewiston; three nieces and three nephews.

   A graveside service will be held Saturday, Aug. 6 at 11 am at Vineland Cemetery in Clarkston, WA. Services are under the direction of Malcom’s Brower-Wann Funeral Home. Condolences for the family may be left online at www.malcomsfuneralhome.com.

   A memorial celebration of life is being held for Carolyn Erickson on Saturday, Aug. 6 at the Weippe Community Center in Weippe at 1:30 p.m.

   Carolyn was a long time resident of the Pierce-Weippe area. She passed away Dec. 8, 2010 in Bow, WA at the age of 70.

Kurt K. Potratz, 79, Orofino

   Kurt K. Potratz of Orofino went home to be with the Lord Sunday, July 24, 2011 at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, WA. He was 79.

   Kurt was born July 14, 1932 in Pierre, SD to Walter and Violet Potratz.

   He graduated from Rathdrum High School in 1951, and from North Idaho Jr. College in 1953. He also attended the University of Idaho for a short time. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1962.

   Kurt married Bonita Turcott Oct. 20, 1955. After serving his country he returned to the Coeur d’Alene area to log for various companies before moving his family to the Pierce area, where he became a logging contractor for Potlatch Corporation.

   The family enjoyed numerous summers on the Northfork where he was working. He loved to go fishing there with his kids. After retiring in 1994 he built his own fishing pond, where he spent many hours sitting on the dock fishing.

   They moved to Orofino five years ago and were members of the First Baptist Church. He loved the Lord and faithfully served in his church, sharing the gospel every chance he could. He was a very giving person and was always there to lend a helping hand.

   Kurt was very involved within the community. He served on the Clearwater County Planning & Zoning Committee for 18 years, helped build the Mountain View Baptist Church in Pierce and was involved with numerous volunteer projects. He was very well known for his carpentry skills.

   He is survived by his wife Bonita and their children, sons Mike Potratz of Puyallup, WA and Bob and wife Leslie of Pierce, and daughter Sharon Waugh and husband Jeff of Orofino; his mother, Violet Potratz and brother Gary Potratz of Coeur d’Alene and sister Joann Carlson of Greenacres, WA; four grandsons, Matt, Chris and Jon Potratz and Joey Myers; two granddaughters, Jessica Libolt and Renee Potratz; and seven great grandchildren.

   A celebration of Kurt’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6 at the First Baptist Church, 219 118th St in Orofino. A provided dinner will follow.

Floyd Snyder, 87, Weippe

   Floyd Gordon Snyder, formerly of Weippe, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center after battling a long and extended illness. He was 87.

   Floyd was born to Denver and Sylvia (Teed) Snyder at the family home on the Weippe Prairie May 20, 1924. 

   He was a fun-loving and mischievous boy who was raised in a family of eight children (five boys and three girls).  Floyd was eight years old when his father passed away, and his mother passed away when he was eleven years old.  The close-knit family of children managed to stay together with the help of their grandmother, Lillian Teed.

   During those years, Floyd was educated in the Weippe schools.  When he was 14 years old and a freshman in high school, he worked nights in a lumber mill on a green chain and went to school by day.

   Floyd was a proud member of Weippe’s first six-man football team, and he played on the school’s basketball team.

   Floyd married his high school sweetheart, Barbara (Wells) Snyder, May 27, 1944.  During their years together, Floyd worked on their ranch to develop a herd of Hereford cattle.  He also worked 20 years in the logging industry for Frank Fromelt after which he continued working for various other logging operations. 

   In off-seasons, he worked at various locations as an operating engineer through the Operating Engineer’s Local 370 running heavy equipment.  In 1973 the couple sold their ranch and moved to Weippe where they still own their home. 

   Floyd loved basketball. He attended referee classes and served as a referee for high school games.  He also played for several years on Weippe and Pierce town teams. For three years, he coached basketball to a group of boys from their fifth grade year through eighth grade. This group of boys later went on to win the state championship in their league.  Floyd was really proud of the boys’ accomplishment. 

   Floyd enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, team roping, going to auction sales, and serving as a livestock project 4-H leader.  He never knew a stranger, and he always enjoyed visiting with other people. He also enjoyed listening to music provided by family members. Family was very important to Floyd.

   Surviving Floyd is his wife, Barbara, of 67 years; his daughter Gwen (Burton) Greenfield and her husband Vic; his grandchildren Ted Burton, Kim Burton, and Russ Burton and his wife Elena; and his one great-grandchild, Aleska Burton.

   Also surviving Floyd are two sisters, Marie Vanderpool and Lillie Thiessen and her husband Gordon; numerous nieces, one nephew, and numerous cousins.

   Floyd was preceded in death by his son, Roger Snyder; his parents; his brothers, Robert, Bert, Ellis, and Louie; and his sister, Mary.

   Funeral services were held Monday, July 25, at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino, at 11 a.m. A graveside service took place at the Weippe Cemetery followed by a potluck dinner at the White Pine Rebekah Lodge in Weippe.

Donna L. Rueppel, 82, Peck

   Donna Lorraine Rueppel of Peck passed away Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Garden Skilled facility in Spokane, due to complications related to cardiac surgery. She was 82.

   Family and friends are invited to gather for a potluck lunch at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 30 at the Peck Community Center to help celebrate her life.

   Donna was born in Princeton, ID on July 7, 1928, to William and Nellie (Shook) Trotter. She attended grade school in Princeton and high school in Potlatch, graduating in 1946. On June 7, 1946 she and John W. Rueppel were married in Moscow.

   In 1953 John went to work for Clearwater Power Company and they moved to Lewiston. In 1961 he was transferred to Orofino and in 1962 the family moved to Peck.

   Donna was a homemaker and was dedicated to her family. Not only was she “Mom” to her own three children, but a lot of the other kids in Peck. The kids were all invited to the Rueppel’s and were treated as family, the only requirement before entering the house was “take your shoes off outside, bring them in and put them on the newspaper inside the kitchen door.” She was also an avid Mariners fan and until her illness never missed a game on television.

   Donna had two sons and one daughter, all of whom passed away in early adulthood due to complications of Type I Diabetes Mellitus.

   She is survived by her sister Ardith (Max) Stewart of Lewiston; sisters-in-law Jessie Rueppel and Mitzy Burris, both of Moscow, and Wanda Rueppel of Deary; grandchildren Mirisa (Dawny) McCullough of Pendleton, OR, Tammy Crawley of Pilot Rock, OR, John W. (Nick) Rueppel of Peck, Barry C. (B.C.) Rueppel of Beaverton, OR, Coby Bloodsworth of Peck and Robert Rueppel of Pilot Rock; 11 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

   She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John W., daughter Gaylene Bloodsworth, sons John D. and Barry L., and grandson Marty Bloodsworth.

Zona Brewer Grytness, 71, Spokane, WA

   Zona Brewer Grytness of Spokane, WA passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 2, 2011, surrounded by her family.

   Zona was born in Orofino on April 26, 1941 to Helen (Wells) and Strather (Straw) Brewer and had a very happy childhood with her sister, Sonnie, born 13 months later.

   They lived at logging camps in northern Idaho, and then moved to Spokane, WA prior to Straw’s deployment to the South Pacific in World War II. The family settled in Peck after her parents purchased the Peck store from her grandfather, Earl Wells.

   Zona graduated from Orofino High School in 1959. Her grandchildren were always thrilled to know their beloved “Nana” had actually worn poodle skirts and danced the twist.

   Zona attended Lewis and Clark Normal School in Lewiston, and later married Richard (Dick) Grytness. They had two children, Tammy and Jeff. They made their family home in Lewiston, and Spokane.

   Zona was so many things, a loving, inspiring and devoted mother and grandmother, a wonderful sister, a great aunt and cousin, and a terrific friend. During her retirement, Dick and Zona loved traveling and spending time with their family and friends, attending countless sports games, piano and dance recitals, and choir concerts of their grandchildren, Katie and Peter Welch.

   Missing her so very much are her husband, Dick Grytness; daughter, Tammy and husband, Mark of Mercer Island, WA; son, Jeff of Loon Lake, WA; sister, Sonnie Campbell of Spokane; great uncle, Dayton Wells and his wife, Norma of Spokane; great aunt, Gail Dietz of La Center, WA; cousins, Sabra Dietz (Cletus), La Center, WA, Steve Dietz (Lori) of Lewiston, and Clayton Cross (Yvonne) of Clarkston, WA.

   A memorial service and reception will be held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 9, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Orofino.

William “Bill” Williams, 69, former resident

1942-2011

   William Ervin “Bill” Williams, Antioch, CA, formerly of Orofino, left this Earth for Heaven, Thursday, July 14, 2011 after a long battle with cancer. He was 69.

   Bill was born Jan. 22, 1942 in Wendell to Charles Orval and Helen Mae Claiborn-Williams. 

   He went to Orofino High School.  He received his GED on March 11, 1960 from the United States Armed Forces Institute (USAFI). He served in the United States Army from July 18, 1960 to July 17, 1963 and was stationed at Fort Leonard, Wood, MO,  where he received an honorable discharge. He received medals for marksmanship (rifle), expert (carbine) and good conduct. He received a certificate for Operating Engineers Journeyman Apprenticeship May 25, 1971.

   He was a construction machine operator and drove a bulldozer. He was employed by and retired from Ford Motor Company after 30+ years. He then drove a tour bus for Sierra Pacific Tours until his passing.

   Bill loved animals, he enjoyed driving, traveling and camping in his motor home, fishing, gold panning and watching Kansas lightening storms with his granddaughters. Everyone who met Bill loved and adored him.

   Bill married Ruth “Sue” Tinsley on March 9, 1963 in Dawson, MO. They moved to Idaho then to California. They divorced June 1966 in Milpitas, CA.

   Bill married Kay Bailey on Aug. 5, 1972 in Reno, NV.  She survives him.

   Survivors also include his daughter, Helen Fayeline “Faye” Williams-Rubow and her husband Chuck, Chanute, KS; stepson Ralph Deborba, Danville, CA; stepdaughter Tracy Deborba, San Jose, CA; a verbally adopted daughter Charlotte Shaw-Chase and husband Mike, Chanute, KS; a verbally adopted son Tony Clark, Chanute, KS; mother Helen Mae Highly, Portland, OR;  three brothers George Alan and wife Carol Williams, Portland, OR, Dewey Lee and wife Renee Williams, Fort Worth, TX, Roy John Williams, Lincoln, NE; sister Cherie Mae Williams-Shearer and husband Tom, Portland, OR;  four granddaughters Desirae Rubow, Los Angeles, CA, Danielle, Darian and Devin Rubow, Chanute, KS; two step-grandchildren Finesse and Israel Deborba, San Jose, CA; six verbally adopted grandchildren, Kristin, Kody and Kylie Chase, and Levi, Matt and Toni Clark, Chanute, KS;  god-daughter Cali Bowersmith, San Jose, CA; ex-wife and friend Sue Tinsley-Shaw and several nieces and nephews.

   Preceded in death are Bill’s father Charles Orval Williams; brothers David Richard Williams, Paul Michael Williams and Bills paternal and maternal grandparents.

   At Bills request there will be no services. His body will be cremated and taken home in a beautiful black and white marble urn. A personal celebration of Bill’s life will be observed by the family.

   Memorials are suggested to the cancer society or any charity of your choice in Bill’s name.

Kenneth D. Stockard, 85, Kamiah

   Kenneth D. Stockard, of Kamiah, died Sunday, July 17, 2011, at St. Mary's Hospital in Cottonwood. He was 85.

   Ken was born Nov. 26, 1925, at Greer to Charles and Elsie McKinley Stockard.

   He attended grade school in Greer, and high school in Kamiah and Cottonwood.

   Ken joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served in the Pacific during World War II. After discharge he returned to the Orofino-Weippe area, where he worked at numerous mills, mostly as an electrician or certified lumber grader. Ken also worked six years on the construction of Dworshak Dam as an equipment operator and electrician.

   He married Mary McPherson in Orofino, June 1, 1948, and she died in 1991.

   Ken was an avid fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed many hobbies including music and photography.

   He is survived by his best friend and companion, Rosemary Hutchins of Kamiah; his stepson, Melvin McPherson of Weippe; and four step-grandchildren. Ken was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Stockard; two stepchildren, Pat and Sam; three brothers, Dick, Frank and Lester; and two sisters, Beula and Florence.

   A memorial Mass was held Thursday, July 2 at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Kamiah. Inurnment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Kooskia. Trenary Funeral Home of Kooskia is assisting the family.

Robert Jacobson, 78, Whitefish, MT

   Robert C. “Jake” Jacobson, Whitefish, MT, passed away unexpectedly at his home on July 13, 2011. He was 78.

   Jake will be missed greatly by his family and friends.

   He was born in Whitefish on March 14, 1933 to Andy and Lucille Jacobson. He spent his childhood in Whitefish and attended Whitefish schools.

   Jake married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Mason on June 1, 1953. Shirley and Jake recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary.

   Jake joined the Navy in 1951 and served in Korea. Jake and Shirley lived in San Francisco during those years. After his discharge, the couple returned to their hometown. They started a business and started a family living on Texas Ave. near family for the next seven years.

   Sons Bobby and Danny were born in 1956 and 1958. Tragically, Bobby passed away from complications of a spinal meningococcal virus in 1962.

   In 1961 Jake took a job with the U.S. Forest Service. The family moved to Billings, MT to begin a new journey and remained there eight years. Their son Mason (Smokey) was born there in 1963.

   The family then settled in Orofino and remained there until Jake’s retirement in 1988. They lived in Orofino 20 years. The couple then returned to Whitefish, settling in the Mason family home on Texas Ave.

   Jake had many hobbies and interest and was always busy puttering around or fixing something. He enjoyed 4-wheeling, snowmobiling, hunting and working with various service organizations including Moose Lodge Elks, VFW, Sheriff’s Posse and Clearwater Search and Rescue. Jake was the founding member of the Iguana’s in 1976 in Orofino.

   Jake and Shirley had the opportunity to travel and to spend time with family and friends camping and boating all over the United States.

   He was preceded in death by his parents; younger brother Dan, and his son Bobby.

   Surviving him is his wife Shirley; sons Dan and wife Dawn, Whitefish, MT and the North Fork, Mason and wife Debbie, currently residing in Belize; Dan’s sons, AJ of California, Tyler and wife Malarie, currently serving in the U.S. Army stationed in North Carolina; Dawn’s sons Nathan, Garrett and wife, Liz and Thane and Baylee; Mason’s children David, Jeremy, Anna, Joel, Grace, Daniel, Mercy and Isaiah; sister Betty; brother Bruce and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

   Jake never failed to lend a hand or offer help. He was a master storyteller and had an infectious laugh and smile that could liven up any situation.

   To our dear “Jake”: a hole has been left in our hearts and in our lives. We will forever love and miss you!

   A memorial service was held July 19 at the Moose Lodge in Whitefish.

   A memorial celebration of life is being held for Carolyn Erickson on Saturday, Aug. 6 at the Weippe Community Center in Weippe at 1:30 p.m.
