Thomas Coma, 63, Orofino

   Thomas Patrick Coma, of Orofino, died Dec. 31, 2010, at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino. He was 63. No services are planned. Cremation is to take place. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in care of arrangements.

Kenneth P. Schoenek, 89, Orofino

   Kenneth P. Schoenek of Orofino died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011 at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino. He was 89.

   Ken was born to Paul and Georgie Schoenek in McAllister, MT. He graduated from Bozeman High School in 1940 and spent one year in Seattle, where he worked for Boeing and attended the University of Washington. That was also when he bought and learned to fly his first plane.

   He joined the Navy Air Force in 1942, where he was a flight instructor until being deployed to the Pacific to fly torpedo planes, PBY-1 and PBY-2, after enemy shipping.

   In the spring of 1945 he was shot down, and he and his crew of five escaped on a rubber raft. They floated for seven days before being picked up by a plane called “Mother Goose.”

   Ken said he always thought if they were ever shot down, the only chance to get out would be if he could spin the  plane and land on top of the water, like you do when skipping rocks. He did this and they were able to get out before the plane was riddled.

   He spent his post war years in Pharmacy, graduating from Auburn University, in Alabama.

   Ken is survived by his wife, Shirley; his nephew, Paul Sagunsky and his cousin, Dr. Edna Lay of Bozeman, MT.

   At his request no services will be held. Cremation will take place.

Ruth Bausch, 88, Orofino

   Ruth Grace Meadows Bausch passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, Jan. 7, 2011 at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino. She was 88.

    Ruth was born Dec. 10, 1922, in Grand Junction, CO to Louis and Grace Meadows. The family moved to Salt Lake City, UT, a few years later. When the Great Depression hit, they moved to Declo, Idaho, to work in the potato fields. Although Ruth and her three younger brothers, Albert, Rueben, and Merle, didn't have many possessions during their younger years, they were richly blessed with strong family values and a hard work ethic.

   In 1939, her family relocated to Lewiston, where Ruth graduated from high school in 1941. On July 4, 1942, she married Daniel Bausch in Wapato, WA, and they made their home in Lewiston while Dan served in World War II. Upon his discharge, they moved to O'Neil, NE for a short time, then returned to Lewiston where Dan went to work for Clearwater Power Company. Dan, Ruth, and their three children, Woody, Sandy, and Dennis, lived in Lewiston and Juliaetta for eight years before they moved to Orofino in 1955.

   Ruth very much loved the home and farm that she and Dan built. She always welcomed guests, whether they were family, friends or strangers, into her home. Ruth would engage guests in a game of cards or entertain them with fond stories of her family. Guests never left her house without a full tummy and a smile on their face.

   Ruth was famous for her cooking, especially her buttermilk pancakes and homemade cinnamon rolls. She would graciously share her recipes with anyone upon request, but all agreed that no one could quite replicate the taste because she always added a special ingredient (love) to everything she made.
   Ruth lived a life of honesty, hard work, and a love for all people. If she wasn't cooking, cleaning, or tending to other chores around the family farm, she was painting ceramics, making yarn covered hangers, sewing, or crafting. She was well known as a grocery clerk in the old M&K in Lewiston, and Bessents, and the old Hayes stores in Orofino.

   Although Parkinson's Disease limited her mobility in later years, she enjoyed taking trips to the casino and shopping.
   Ruth is survived by her three children and their spouses: Woody and Colleen Bausch, Sandy and Ed Butler, and Dennis and Kim Bausch. She enjoyed her seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one brother and his spouse, Rueben and Jeanne Meadows, and an abundance of extended family and close friends.

   Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Albert and Merle, and her husband, Dan.

   A visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 14, 2011 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino.

   Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, 11 a.m. at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino. A potluck luncheon will follow at the Orofino Senior Center. Meat and beverages will be provided. If desired, please bring a side dish, salad, or dessert. Burial will be held at Normal Hill Cemetery in Lewiston at 3 p.m.

Betty Louise Brown, 77, Orofino

   Betty Louise Brown was born in Jerome, Idaho, Sept. 8, 1933, to Lereatta Wolverton Brown and James Morris Brown Sr. She died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011. She was 77.  

   Her early childhood was spent in southern Idaho, rich with aunts and cousins. Betty graduated from Orofino High School in 1951, where she met the only man in her life, James Alden Brown Sr.

   Betty and Jim made their life home in Orofino and raised two daughters, Chris and Debbie, and a son, Jim.

   The pride of her life was her family, of whom there are many members. They include: Christine and Gary McBee, Todd McBee and Stacy McBee; James Alden Brown Jr. and Billie Brown; Tansi Pedersen, Roddy and Toni Brown with Dakota, Tyra, Mikey, Lilly and Sierra; Tara Wilson with children Matea, Taylor, Payton and one yet to come, and Tessa Brown; Debra and Mike Claffey, Mike Claffey, Marc Claffey, Angie and Elmer Robertson with children, Ariel and Jaden; Brandi Claffey and fiance Riley O'Brien. She also formed lifelong friends from which the "Wild Bunch" was born.

   During her life, Betty was involved with many organizations in the community. One place you could always count on seeing her was at the elections where she served as an election official. She was instrumental in getting the Clearwater Valley Hospital Auxiliary started. She served on the Riverside Water and Sewer Board from 1993 to the present, for the past six years as chairwoman. Betty was involved in many enterprises in her life, retiring from a full-service drapery shop with partner Edith Day.

   Betty was very artistic. There wasn't any craft, sewing or painting project, to name a few, that she hadn't mastered. She blessed many with the fruits of her talent.

   Someone very special in both Betty's life as well as Jim's was their lifelong very best friend, Leif Hovland. Leif, a childhood friend of Jim's has seen Jim and Betty through much of what life has thrown at them. During this last illness of Betty's, he was a godsend to her in every way. He has done so much that the family cannot thank him enough for.

   Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Brown, who passed away July 25, 1997; her parents, Lereatta McDonald and James Morris Brown Sr.; and her best friend, Pat Dewey.

   A visitation for Betty was held Jan. 12 at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino. Services were conducted Jan. 13 at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel.

   Interment took place at Riverside Cemetery after the service. A dinner was held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars building in Orofino.

   Donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Betty McIntosh, 67, of Weippe

   Betty McIntosh was born Oct. 3, 1943.  On Jan. 4, 2011, at age 67, she passed from this world.

   She was survived by her husband of over 50 years, Don McIntosh.  They met while they attended school in Weippe and were married July 16, 1960.  They have lived in the area since then. They lived on the land previously owned by Don's parents.

   She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Kathleen Vargovich, her brothers, John and Theodore Vargovich.  She was survived by her brothers, Donald Vargovich of Virginia, Joseph Vargovich of Michigan, William Vargovich of Orofino and James Vargovich of Weippe; her children, Don McIntosh Jr. of Weippe and his wife, Kim, Tammey Tilley of Weippe and her husband, Bill, Sandy Fletcher of Clarkston, Wa. and her husband, Cory;  her grandchildren, Lucas Tilley and his wife Veronica, Lynnae Tilley, Jami Carrico, Stephen Carrico, April McIntosh, Schreline McIntosh, Darrion McIntosh and Taylor McIntosh.  Great grandchildren are Trinity Tilley, Serenity Tilley, Xayden Lefors, Natalie Carrico, Gabriel Carrico and Dontae Carrico.

   She was cremated and per her request there will be no services.  She immensely enjoyed the short time she had on this earth and wanted those left behind to celebrate every minute of life while we have the opportunity.  She often talked about how lucky she was to have the friends and family she was privileged with.  She was a loving and giving member of her family and she will be missed beyond comprehension.  Her favorite pass time after she retired was to work beneath the shade of the trees in the back yard.  Don would drag in logs to this shady spot and she would saw the logs into chunks for firewood.  She would stack the wood between the trees making some what of a maze.

   Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, crocheting, fishing, hunting and most of all riding her 4 wheeler on the limitless trails and roads around the area.

Dollie Grace Colwell, 78, Peck

   Dollie Grace Colwell passed away peacefully at Tri-State Memorial Hospital on Jan. 8, 2011 surrounded by her husband, four sons, daughter and numerous grandchildren. She was 78.

   She was born Oct. 3, 1932 to John Phillip and Elsie Dick in Pravine, IL. She grew up on the family farm in Smithfield, IL and graduated from Yates City High School in 1950. From there she went on to Saint Francis School of Nursing in Peoria, IL. She graduated with a Registered Nursing degree in September 1953 where she also received an endorsement in psychiatric nursing from the Creighton University Saint Joseph Unit in August 1953. After graduating she continued working at the Saint Francis Hospital as an RN until she met the love of her life, Chuck.

   She married Charles Edwin Colwell Feb. 27, 1955. After getting married they made 15 moves with five years between Illinois, Montana and Idaho. They finally settled down permanently in Peck around 1961. She worked as a Registered Nurse in Orofino; approximately 3 ½ years at Clearwater Valley Hospital and then 28 years at Idaho State Hospital North, where she retired from there in 1993. Some of her many favorite hobbies were going to yard sales, gardening, canning, sewing, and needlepoint.

   Their original plan was to have six kids, three boys and three girls. After their fourth son was born they decided the ratio of boys to girls was now out of balance. Although Dollie always wanted a daughter she decided then that she would wait and let her boys bring her daughters home; “already trained and with no returns.” She lover all her daughters-in-law as if they were her own.

   She leaves behind her children Pat and Becky Colwell of Peck, Gary and Jerri Leigh Colwell of Lewiston, Darrel and Paula Colwell of Peck, and Terry and Nancy Colwell of Orofino; grandchildren Jerry and Lise Colwell, Kathleen and Arby Shown, Joshua and Kelsy Colwell, Madison Colwell, Jennifer Colwell, Jeremy Colwell, Randi Colwell, and Jordan Colwell; great-grandchildren Michael, Natalia, Ryan, Ridge, Selway, Canyon, Syringa and Trinity; sisters Marge and Russel Coulter, and Rosalie Smith; brothers Bernice Dick and John and Sherry Dick; numerous nieces and nephews.

   Preceding her in death were her parents John and Elsie; brother-in-law Dean Smith (Rosalie); sister-in-law Bonnie Colwell Dick (Bernice) and a great niece who she was very close friend to Rhonda Orr.

   A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, Jan. 14 at the Peck Community Center at 1 p.m. followed by a potluck dinner host by the Peck Ladies Club.

Darlene Jackson, 74, Weippe

    Darlene Faith Jackson, of Weippe died Jan. 10, 2011 at her home in Weippe. She was 74.

    A visitation will be held Thursday, Jan 13 from 2 – 5 p.m. at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel. Funeral Service will be held Monday, Jan. 17, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel with burial to follow at 2 p.m. at Lewis Clark Memorial Gardens in Lewiston.

Rosella G. Snyder, 102, Orofino

   Rosella G. Snyder, Orofino, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011 at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation Center in Orofino. She was 102.

   Services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 18 at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel on Michigan Avenue, Orofino, followed by a dinner at the United Methodist Church on College Avenue, Orofino.

Ruth A. Archer, 64, Pierce

   Ruth A. Archer, of Pierce, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. She was 64. Arrangements are pending with Merchant Funeral Home of Clarkston.

Teresa K. Goffinet Rost, 53, Spokane

   Teresa Kay Rost, known as Terry, died in Spokane Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, from cancer. She was 53.

   Terry was born in Lewiston, March 28, 1957, to Shirley Harding Goffinet and Donald Ray Goffinet. She grew up in Lewiston and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1975.

   Terry married Flint Rost in 1994, and they made their home in Spokane. They have two sons, Jordan and Zachery. Terry loved her sons very much and was very proud of both of them.

   Terry worked for Barney's Harvest Foods since 1977. She began her career in Lewiston then moved to Spokane. She had many good friends at work and also enjoyed visiting with her customers.

   She is survived by her husband, Flint; sons Jordan and Zachery; father Don Goffinet of Lewiston; sister, Cheryl Goffinet of Lewiston; brother, John Goffinet and wife Sandra of Orofino; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

   Terry was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Goffinet; grandparents Gordon and Elizabeth Goffinet; and grandmother, Winnie Hirsch.

   No services are planned at this time.

Ron Lyons, Weippe

   Ron Lyons of Weippe died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011.

   Services will be held Monday, Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. at the Fraser Cemetery, with a potluck after the service. (The printed version of the paper is incorrect; the services are NOT Sunday.)

James Barnett, 60, Orofino

   James R. Barnett, Orofino, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. He was 60.

   Services are pending with Mountain View Funeral Home of Lewiston.

Sulo Wuori, 88, Greer

   Sulo Wuori, of Greer, passed away Jan. 1, 2011 while in Stevensville, MT. He was 88.

   He was born to Raisa and Henry Wuori on Jan. 2, 1922 in Elo, MI.

   In the late 1940’s he moved to the around Orofino and Pierce areas where he worked most of his life in the logging industry until he retired.

   He married Sophia Lester on Dec. 18, 1953. She had two daughters Hazel Parker of Ludowici, GA and Erma Jones of Orofino.

   In 1997 he married Betty Weigand in Montana. She has three daughters: Beverly Rawls, Susie Hambrick and Debbie Miller, all of Montana.

   Sulo was an avid hunter and fisherman and getting out in the backwoods of Idaho.

   He is survived by his wife Betty; her three daughters from Montana; daughters Beverly Rawls, Susie Hambrick and Debbie Miller; several grandchildren; nephews and nieces from Michigan and California.

   He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Sophia; 13 brothers and a sister.

   He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.

   A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. at the Ascension Lutheran Church, 215 115th St., Orofino, with a dinner to follow.
