Martins’ 65th
More on the Martins... Everet and Barbara were still in high school when they decided to get married but Everet knew from his sophomore year on he’d be drafted into the Army at the age of 18 so he planned his high school career accordingly by taking enough credits to finish in seven semesters (instead of eight). He decided to join the Navy instead and signed on for V-6 which means victory plus six months. The day he was 18 he left for the Navy and training as Electrician’s Mate. Barbara stayed home and worked in the Weippe post office as assistant postmaster. Everet returned from the Navy and they have lived in Weippe since. Our good fortune. Congratulations to the Martins.
Landfill schedule
Joyce at AITCO says the landfill will be closed Dec. 24-25 (Thursday and Friday).
Community Christmas Tree
The Christmas spirit is alive and well in Weippe! The community Christmas Tree lightning brought out about 30 people. Linda Soles was the organizer and said many people helped make this event work. The tree will be lit every day now from 4:30 to 11 until New Years.
Ed Dobson provided the space in town to install the tree. Deena & Jim Irby donated the tree itself. Material for the tree stand was donated by Jason Berreth and Bill Barteaux and members of the Pierce/Weippe ATV Trailriders made the stand. Empire Mill plowed the area so the tree could be installed. The Rebekahs contributed the electricity. Sherry Paige created the posters for the event. Bev Bailey, Weippe City Hall and Sherry Schlader provided lights. Ronda Rhoads provided song sheets while Linda Soules provided music. Stanton Lewis and Mary Ann's also contributed. Weippe Fire Department helped decorate the tree. If I missed anybody let me know, will add next week.
Plans for next year are to possibly use a live tree and light it the first week in December. Linda will keep us informed.
Senior Center
Thursday lunch at the Senior Center will be turkey with all the trimmings.
City News
It is snow removal time once again. City equipment operators would appreciate it if residents would remove vehicles from the right-of-way to allow for the snow plows.
City dog licenses are due. Prices will double Jan. 15.
The 2008 Audit Report is now available for review at city hall.
Pinochle at the Lodge
I am in big trouble. Gave the wrong time for pinochle in last week’s news and Dolores said they were inundated with calls asking why the change. It starts at 1:30 p.m. ALWAYS. Yikes! Sorry guys.
