CVHC hosts childbirth education class Jan. 9
Cheri Carter, RN,
(pictured) will facilitate a class for expectant parents in their second or
third trimester of pregnancy on Saturday, Jan. 9 from
9 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m. at
Clearwater Valley Hospital. Carter was an OB nurse at St. Joseph Regional
Medical Center for six years and has specialized training in labor, delivery and
childbirth education.
The class is provided as a public service by CVHC. Lunch is also provided at no cost. “We understand that this is a very special time in the life of the parents. Attending the day long class helps prepare parents. Knowing what to expect during the labor and delivery process and what to expect once you bring the baby home whether it’s a first baby or one of many enhances the experience,” said Carter. “I’ve invited a number of presenters to speak about a variety of topics so it’s a full day, but also lots of fun.”
Carter is scheduling the Infant Toddler Program Coordinator for the Department of Health and Welfare. “She will talk about the stages of infant development so parents can gauge their child’s progress. I’ll also have Joyce Bunt a registered dietitian with CVHC talk about breast feeding and nutrition for mom and baby before and after the birth. She’ll talk about caloric intake, vitamins and the importance of folic acid even before the pregnancy begins.”
Sarah McGrath, a local Yoga instructor, will instruct and demonstrate various yoga positions and methods to enhance breathing and relaxation techniques during pregnancy and for use during labor and delivery.
Presenters will also include one of the two CVHC CNAs who are Certified Child Passenger Seat Technicians. Either Carol Berkey or Denise Cole will talk about selecting the proper seat, its placement and how to safely secure the infant. They are also available at any time to meet a parent in the hospital parking lot to look at their child safety seat and instruct on its proper usage. Call 476-4555 for an appointment.
Either Dr Christopher Jenkins or Dr. Amy Schochler will describe exercises during pregnancy to help facilitate delivery. One of the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists will discuss the options, risks and benefits of pain management during delivery if and when the mom requests it, according to Carter.
To register for the class call CVH, 476-4555 and ask for the nurses’ station. The classes are offered quarterly. The next class will be scheduled on a Saturday in April.
