Albert Goodwin, 84, Mt. Pleasant, MI
Albert was born Sept. 9, 1925 in Detroit, MI, the son of Brace and Madeline (Hade) Goodwin. He graduated from Melvindale High School in the Class of 1943. Albert married Cleta Thomas on Aug. 7, 1948 in Romulus, MI. Albert was drafted during World War II and attained the rank of sergeant in the U.S. Army. During the war, he was captured and held as a P.O.W. in Europe. He went to work for Kaiser-Frasier Automobile Manufacturing as an accountant. Albert then worked for the United States Postal Service for 28 and a half years, retiring in 1985. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. Albert enjoyed reading and gardening, especially his flowers. He also enjoyed sports and hunting. Albert and his wife spent many winters in Tavares, where he spent a lot of time shuffling. The second week of June for 19 consecutive years, Al and Cleta drove from Michigan to the Orofino area to spend time with their Idaho family, Mike and Karen (Bird) Goodwin and Grandsons Josh and Caleb. They watched many baseball games through the years, beginning with Mike’s play on the McLaughlin Logging Team at the Father’s Day Tournaments and on through the years with Josh and Caleb at Maniac games and American Legion. Close to Ruth and Bill Bird of Greer, they often spoke of the good folks in Orofino. Unlike many “flatlanders,” Al and Cleta loved traveling that last stretch from Lolo, MT, and then up into our beautiful timber country. Most important to Albert was spending time with his family. Albert is survived by his wife, Cleta; children, Michael (Karen) Goodwin of Orofino and Holly (Gene) Whitehead of Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren, Joshua and Caleb Goodwin, Vicky (Chris) Ball, and Todd Whitehead; four great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Whitney Goodwin and Emily and Kimberly Ball; and a brother, Ralph (Joanne) Goodwin of North Carolina. Albert was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gerald Goodwin. Funeral services for Albert were held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel, located at 114 S. Bradley Street in Mt. Pleasant, on Nov. 28, with Pastor Jon VanDop of Rosebush United Methodist Church officiating. You may view Albert’s obituary online and send a private condolence to the family or sign the public guestbook at www.clarkfuneralchapel.com. |
