Happy Thanksgiving from Fraser

By Norma Brand

The residents of the Fraser community want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. We hope you enjoy your dinner and that you take time to reflect on all the blessings you have received during the year.

Gini Donnelly brought the dictionary project to the attention of the members of the Fraser Grange in 2004. The Grange voted to support the project, and dictionaries were delivered to the third grade classes of Weippe and Pierce. After the Grange closed in March of 2008, the Fraser Community Club voted to continue this project.

On Thursday, Nov. 12, Linda Beard and Norma Brand drove to Timberline Schools to again distribute the dictionaries.

There are six students in the third grade class this year. Their teacher, Rea Dobson, introduced Linda and Norma to the class and explained the dictionary project. Linda told the class that she still has the dictionary she received when she was in school. Next year there will be 15 students in the third grade.

Noah Webster would be proud of this project. Did you know he was born on Oct. 16, and that he would be 251 years old this year? Webster’s Compendious Dictionary of the English Language was the first dictionary that used distinctly American spellings, pronunciations and definitions. We hope the students will make good use of their dictionaries.

Shirley Lutes reported that her mother, Betty Smolinski, has moved back on the hill. She will be living with Keith and Shirley on Cottonwood Road. She loves to play Pinochle, look for her at the Rebekah Lodge and the Fraser Community Club. Welcome back Bertys.

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, Oreta Stuart flew to Portland, OR. She visited her daughter, Carmen Minard, and her husband, Scott and helped them celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. The following day she and her granddaughter, Tessa Brown flew to Las Vegas, NV, to attend the Professional Bull Riders’ Finals. Oreta’s brother, Howard Holt and his wife, Diane, also attended this event. They spent their time site seeing and especially enjoyed the water show outside the Billagio Hotel. They drove out to Hoover Dam and were surprised to see how low the water was in Lake Mead. Next year, they will make the trip again, they already have their tickets.

Oreta added another replica to her bullpen; this one is black with a white blaze on its face and carries the name, “Chicken on a Chain”. With a moniker like that, no wonder he puts on a good show!

When Oreta returned home, she had a phone call from the Moneysaver. She had won a $75 gift certificate for a recipe she had entered called “Frying Pan Cookies”. Look for it in the recent issue of that paper. Good job, Oreta!

Game Day

What do you think about a game day at the Fraser Community Center? This could be added to the Pinochle Party for those who don’t play cards. What about Dominos or Scrabble?  Call Linda Beard with your ideas at 435-4806.

Sherry Schlader is hosting a Christmas Open House at her business in Weippe on Dec. 4 and 5. On Friday, she will be open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday’s hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stop in and check out her wide selection of gifts. You may get your Christmas shopping done early. We hear some wonderful elves will be making cookies and bars to taste while you shop.
