Smokey Bear visited the Lewis Clark Early Childhood Program in Weippe recently. Linnea Keating read a story about Smokey Bear to the children. Most of the children gave big "Bear" hugs to Smokey and some decided to stay away from him. Pictured (l to r) front row sitting are Sawyer Van Hook and Lane Downing; back row, guest child Zarek Cochrell, Graiclyn Cochrell, Smokey the Bear (LynnAnn Bullene), Lexie Allpress, Harrison Hill, Carly Jared, Linnea Keating and Cadence Wright. For more information about this program or to fill out an application please call 435-4289.

Library news

Next week is Family Reading Week. The Weippe Library is hosting their annual event on Monday, Nov. 16, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Weippe Library. There will be free books and door prizes to be given away.

This year’s theme is Wild About Reading. Our guest reader will be Stephani Bennett, the Timberline School's principals' wife. We'll have light snacks and refreshments. All families are encouraged to come join the fun.

Recent fire

Lisa Weyerts, with the Weippe Fire Department, sends this message…

As you know our community suffered a great loss on Nov. 2 in the trailer fire. The Fire Department is also collecting food, clothing and household furniture and items. On Saturday Nov. 14 we are having a biscuits and gravy feed at the Weippe Community hall starting at 9 a.m. This breakfast will be a benefit for the Proctor/Robles family on a donation basis. We would like everyone to come out and enjoy breakfast and help this family. This is put on by the firefighters.  Thank You, Safety Officer Lisa Weyerts, Weippe Fire Department, 208-435-4030.

Also an account has been set up at White Pine Credit Union to help with funeral expenses. Karen Cole has set this up.

Class

Creative Gifts is offering a Fresh Centerpiece Class Wednesday. Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. Call Bev at 435-4870 for details.

1979 THS graduate in Iraq

I have asked for up-to-dates on former THS graduates so Marlene Hyde, formerly a resident of Weippe, kindly sent the following....

Sheila Hyde, a 1979 graduate of Timberline High School, returned to her desk in Iraq last week, as she left from Washington, D.C. enroute to Kuwait, where she was transported by a military plane to Tallili Base, south of Baghdad.

Sheila returned stateside in August when her position with the Corps of Engineers was completed.

She has spent two years in that area and signed up for one more year after being recruited to her present assignment by the State Department.

While “home” to visit her parents and brother Shane in Lewiston, she also spent time in Seattle where her sister Suzanne lives, as well as two trips to Atlanta, GA to see her sister Sonya. Marlene says one of the perks Sheila enjoys while working for the U.S. is frequent travel to other parts of the world.

Anybody else have updates on THS graduates? Bring ‘em on.
