Voters to decide on bond for new Peck Fire Station

By Alannah Allbrett

A General Obligation Bond of $177,100 has been applied for by the Big Canyon Fire District, which serves Peck to the Clearwater County line west to Lenore. The purpose of the bond is to build a new fire station. Currently, the City of Peck has no indebtedness or financial obligations. The bond is set for a 30 year time period, but it is expected that the bond will be paid down well before time.

Voters in Peck will vote on the bond in the general election Tuesday, Nov. 3 at the Peck Community Center located at 160 S. Main St.. Two separate polling places (within the community center) will be set up – one for the Fire District and one for the City of Peck.

Polling hours are as follows: voting for the Fire District bond will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voting for the City of Peck general election will be from 12 noon until 8 p.m.

Donald Gross, one of three fire commissioners reports that the current fire station has no bathrooms or running water. It houses only three trucks, and there are nine trucks in the district. Presently, six trucks have to be taken out of service each winter for lack of a facility. “They are drained and stored on private property,” said Gross.

If the bond is passed by voters, the new 6,000 square foot facility (pictured above) will have two bathrooms, a combination kitchen and training room, and house eight trucks. If the bond is passed, ground-breaking should take place in late spring. The building will be built in three phases in order to get the project underway. The County of Nez Perce will be sponsors. They will be formally petitioned next month. The 300 member Fire District also partners with Clearwater Economic Development in Lewiston.
