Duke Day

Duke Day was celebrated in Weippe on Thursday, Oct. 1 at the Weippe Cemetery to commemorate the death of Weippe founder Wellington Landon, also known as “The Duke”. The ceremony included a welcome by Everet Martin and a ceremony during which Everet dubbed (with a broadaxe) stand-in Weippe Mayor Norm Steadman as “The Duke”.  “The Duke” then gave his “I had a dream speech” detailing the hopes of the original Landon.

A new headstone was unveiled at Landon’s burial site. This ceremony was created and presented by the Weippe Hilltop Heritage Society.  See photos.

Mural at Durants

Ronda Rhoads had spoken to Will Leaton earlier. Will is not going to school now, so he may be able to finish it this fall. He has added a few new items recently.

Trevor Haag Memorial Race

Marge Sharp’s grandson Warren Joiner and Jared Erlewine, team partners, won 1st place in the Amateur Class last weekend at the Trevor Haag Memorial Race at Bald Mountain.

Son-in-law Troy Joiner and Alan Deyo won first 1st place in the Geritol Division and 2nd Place Overall. Kyle Joiner was racing in Utah that weekend.

Comings and goings

Recently Georgia Watkins, Rosemary Walker, and Maebelann Steadman went traveling. They journeyed up Black Canyon over Hoodoo to Superior, MT. From there they drove to St. Regis, came back to Superior and spent the night in Missoula. During the trip back they stayed the night at the Lochsa Lodge. There had a windstorm before they got there and the power was off so they had dinner by candlelight, and used candles for light getting to the cabins. Primitive but fun.

Ronda and Nick Rhoads recently returned from Phoenix where they spent time with their daughter Deborah Crenshaw, husband Greg, and their children Adrian and Addison. A highlight was checking out the local Cabela’s store.

EMT meeting

A Basic EMT informational meeting is being held Thursday, Oct. 15, 6:30 p.m. at Timberline Schools Library. For more info, call Marv Cook 464-2373 or Nick Rhoads 435-4288.

House Fire

Minnie West says the family appreciates the assistance in   financial help, household goods, and the many offers of help after their fire. She was able to salvage some photos and as she had made photos albums for adult children last Christmas, many family photos have been saved that would otherwise been lost. The dog was able to get out of the house so was saved.  Minnie says the new house is up and running and although there are a few things left to be done, the bulk of the work is finished. Now that she has time to take a breath, she wants everyone to know how grateful she is for their help.
