Duke Day coming up
“Planning for Duke Day Thursday, Oct. 1, is progressing well,” says Mike Green of the Museum Board. There will be canopies and seating for the event at the Weippe Cemetery. The gala celebration will include the posthumously dubbing of Wellington Landon as The Duke of Weippe.
The Duke will be portrayed by Weippe Mayor Norm Steadman. Other events will include the reading of a city proclamation, a history of Landon by museum Chairman Everet Martin, the unveiling of a commemoration marker, and awarding of prizes to poster winners of the fourth grade Idaho history class. The event will begin at 4 p.m.
Sales of Weippe High School souvenir brick have surpassed $200. It is a great start but yet way short of the $1,000 needed to pay for a new roof for the museum addition. The bricks, which are cleaned and stamped with a line print of the school, a WHS logo and a gorilla logo, are available at the museum in Weippe on Wednesdays. The bricks also will be available at Duke Day.
New residents
Dan and Sherry Paige are new Weippe residents. They moved here from Oregon and are friends of Bill and Linda Soles. The Paiges are active fishermen and ATV riders. Welcome to Weippe, Paiges!
Church news
Members of the Wesleyan Church enjoyed the annual campout at Wilderness Gateway over the labor day weekend. The Eternal Hope Wesleyan from Kooskia and Weippe Wesleyan Churches both participated in another great campout again this year, according to Don Blain, pastor of the Weippe Wesleyan Church.
Around 60 people enjoyed camping, playing games, fishing, 4 wheeling, hiking and eating together in addition to a Sunday Morning Worship Service which included an annual Baptismal Service. Judy Lefferts was Baptized this year. Don says, “What an honor to participate in this baptismal service.” He said he appreciates the spirit of cooperation that makes this annual family campout possible.
