Merchants split doubleheader with Lewis-Clark
The
Lewis-Clark Cubs dropped their opener against Orofino before
bouncing back in a pitcher's duel in an American Legion
doubleheader.
The
Merchants scored four runs in the fourth inning to take the first
game 9-7 before Jared Hassell outdueled Michael Welch to give the
Cubs a 3-2 triumph in the nightcap.
The Cubs,
who led 5-2 early in the first game, walked four batters in the
fourth inning and the Merchants took advantage in a game which
featured 15 combined hits.
The second
game, however, was a stark contrast.
The Cubs'
Dodge threw 12 strikeouts to Welch's eight and Reece Qualey's
walk-off double in the seventh broke a 2-2 deadlock.
"Both
pitchers threw great games," Cubs coach Justin Miller said. "It was
a pitcher-dominated game. We were tough mentally in the second game,
but not the first game."
