Last Thursday was Volunteer Recognition Day at the Senior Center. Those recognized were Elva and Leo Binder, Bill and Linda Soles, Frank and Marcy Krug, Lorna Hubler, Corey Rebel, Geraldine Rebel, Doris Owens, Jerry Blanchar and Bea Johnson. Each person was given a jar of homemade jam and a thank you card. These volunteers take meals to people, do bookkeeping, help in the kitchen and lend a hand with whatever needs to be done. The ceremony culminated with cake and ice cream.
Weippe Fire Dept. will be having a car wash on Sat. July 19 from 10 -4. We would like to let all who celebrated the 4th of July at the Mini Park know we had a successful fundraiser and how much we appreciate our community. This will be an annual event. Any more information about up coming events or becoming a volunteer firefighter call Lisa 435-4030
How to get rid of ticks - apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds (15-20), after which the tick will come out on its own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away. Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be damaging in any way.
Rhonda Rhoads sends an update. “I've been through my first round of chemotherapy with no problems. They juiced me up with a lot of anti-nausea pills before I started and I have a supply at home. I am supposed to take Dexamethasone every morning for 3 days, then I have three others I take on an as-needed basis. One benefit to the Dexamethasone is that it gives me nice rosy cheeks. I actually look quite healthy, and I feel pretty good, too.
Today (Thursday) I went back down to Lewiston to get a Neulasta shot. This is the white blood cell booster. Originally I was going to get it in Orofino, but a wonderful lady at Dr. Medince's office knew of a program where the drug company supplies the drug for free to qualifying individuals. I qualified, but I do have to go to Lewiston to get it. (That saves me $4000 a shot! I will be getting four shots.) What a big answer to prayer.
Ruth had me stocked up with her MP3 player and a book on CD for my first chemo treatments that lasted about an hour and a half. As it turned out, I didn't need it because there were a whole bunch of us women in the treatment room who had a fantastic time talking and sharing our stories. It was great.
Almost all of the cancer patients I've met have a really good mind set. Nobody mops around with a "Why me?" attitude. Maybe it's because they treat us really good at the treatment center, almost like a spa.
You might pray for my doctor, Dr. Medince. He had surgery on his leg and has to maneuver around with a cart he kneels on with one leg. He couldn't get the handle bar to stay up and thought he would have to return it, but Ruth knew how to tighten it and saved him a trip.”
Noticed lots of hay in the fields around Weippe. Hopefully it was gathered before the rain.
Bev's Creative Gifts is having a sale this Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Cyndy's 1st Stop Java has opened a sit down coffee shop at the same site. Cyndy has decorated it in a Mediterranean theme. It's a great place to meet friends for coffee and have a treat, maybe a scone, homemade pie. Jamie Allpress has painted designs in Mary Ann’s with a Rodeo theme.
Now is a good time to meander through the trail at the Discovery Center as many of the scrubs/plants are in bloom. There are interpretive signs at many of the plants so it is a good way to learn the names of those you don’t know.
