   With the end of the school year Elvin Pfefferkorn said farewell to his 33 years as a teacher at Orofino Elementary School.

   The first person to rent an apartment at Brookside Landing Retirement Center was Aretha Chilton.

   Two local students were among the 1,686 students named to the spring semester Boise State University Dean’s List. Peck resident Lacey Anne Knowlton, a junior majoring in arts and science and Melissa Lee Ray, Orofino, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering, were named to the Dean’s List.

   Harper Chiropractic Clinic, a 14 month old Orofino business, will have their grand opening July 17.

   Road Runners were the Little League Champions in league standings. Members include Shane Compton, Heidi Kludt, Tracy Johnson, Tammy Joersz, Christy Jenks, Jessica Garrison, Missy Davis, Jenni Geidl, Shelly Greene and Shelly Thompson. Monte Davis and Neal Compton are the coaches.

   Lori Morris of Timberline High School will represent District 2 in the girl’s all star basketball game at Capital High School in Boise.

   Construction began this week to remodel the hotel rooms at the Key Bar and Hotel into apartments. The remodeling is being done by Burnham Construction of Orofino.

   U.S. Corps of Engineers lowered the first of a vinyl curtain in an effort to stop the flow of water through the crack in the dam.

   1979 steelhead harvest is estimated at 5,600.

   Preliminary census for 1980 shows Clearwater County at 10,178, a surprising drop of 6.7 percent from the 1970 figure of 10,871. Loss of dam personnel was a factor.

   Corps of Engineers have begun an extensive program of ridding the Dworshak Pool of driftwood and logs that make boating hazardous. The work will cost over a half million dollars and is being done by the Corps after a dispute among contractors.

   A low bid has been submitted of $34,352 to construct a new ranger’s residence at Powell Ranger Station on the Clearwater Forest.

40 Years Ago

   Travelers are warned that some back county roads on the Clearwater National Forest are still snowbound. Other roads are muddy and extreme driving care is advised.

   1860 Days Royalty was selected at the Queen’s Contest held Saturday at Pierce. Betty Skinner was chosen queen and Connie West and Diana Shubert are princesses and Vicki West Miss Congeniality.

   Farmers Home Administration has financed two new rental housing apartments at Orofino at a cost of $110,000.

   A total of 255 men and 75 vehicles have arrived in Orofino to begin summer work on the Hollywood Grangemont Road. The Lewiston, Moscow, Coeur d’Alene and Bonners Ferry Guard Units are aiding in the work.

   Construction work has begun by a forest service crew for a new $240,000 timber access bridge across the North Fork at Washington Creek, six miles below the Bungalow.

   Wednesdays 101 mercury reading set a new high to date for this year.

   City Council has approved joining the state retirement system. Present annual cost put in is $7,000 a year.

   Shortage of personnel is effecting State Hospital North for the patients. Staff roster has increased from 32 to 44 in recent months. The normal roll is for 62 employees.
