Fraser Park Board honors Claud Judd

By Norma Brand and Cathy Walker

According to Claud Judd’s book Judd’s in Fraser, Idaho, Lewis and Clark crossed through Fraser Park on their way to the Pacific Ocean in 1805. This trail was a main route used by the Nez Perce Tribe as they traveled between Weippe and Orofino.

The local park board dedicated this portion of the trail as a memorial to Claud Judd in 2007. Green Things Nursery in Orofino was hired to landscape the trail and Dave Daniels of Weippe built the bench that sits beside the trail. On Sunday, June 29, Fraser Park Board added another feature to the site, a Dwarf Sitka Blue Spruce.  Elvita Judd and her daughter, Loretta Judd, selected it from the stock at the Green Things Nursery.

Claud and Elvita’s granddaughter, Toni Smith, and her sons, Jamison and Joseph, brought Elvita and Marie Green to the tree planting ceremony. The temperature on Sunday afternoon was 92 degrees, everyone was thankful for the shade provided by the large evergreen trees at the park.

After the tree was planted, Elvita and Marie stayed for the park board meeting.  The board has more improvements planned for the site and for the cook shack.

Fraser Park is a county park, under the direction of the Clearwater County Commissioners; a local park board manages the park.  A caretaker is hired to look after the park; Jake Armitage presently holds this position. The kitchen building is available for use, cost for a half day is $10, a whole day is $15, and for the weekend $25.  To reserve the cook shack, call Linda Beard at 435-4806

The Fraser Community Center Club will hold a regular meeting on July 10. The potluck will start at 6 p.m. and the meeting will follow at 7 p.m.  Plans for the Third Annual Bluegrass and Old Country Western Music Jam Session will be discussed. Everyone is welcome to join. See you there. The jam session is the first weekend in August, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 2-3.  Call Linda Beard at 435-4806 or Norma Brand at 435-4354 for more information.

The Brands enjoyed breakfast at the Timberline Café in Weippe on Monday, June 20.  Norma had time to visit with Maxine Johnstun and her caregiver, and Rose Opresik, while Steve visited with Wes Stuart and Mike Beard.  Maxine had a phone conversation with Clarabell Brown last week, and they enjoyed visiting over old times.

Crews are installing the conduit for the Verizon fiber optic cable on Lower Fords Creek Road. It will eventually run from Uniontown, WA, to Weippe.  The crews have had to do extensive jack hammer and backhoe work to dig the trench the conduit will be installed in. The fiber optic cable will be installed after the conduit job is completed. The residents on the hill have needed this update for a long time.

Janet and Pete Kingen drove to Lewiston on Father’s Day.  They enjoyed a barbeque at the home of Karen and Sam Borders.  Their daughter, Julie Woods, met them at the Border’s home.

Ruth and Chuck McHone are doing fine. Ruth still tends her garden. She takes advantage of the cool temperatures at 5 a.m. then remains inside with Chuck as the day warms up.

Janet Kingen received a call from a friend that lives in Missoula, MT.  Shirley William Randall reads the Clearwater Tribune on the internet so we thought we would mention their long time friendship of 50 years in our column.  Hi Shirley from Janet.

Rodney and Donna Bonner are building a new house on their property on Cottonwood Road.  Welcome back to Fraser.

Marie Armitage is home recovering from knee surgery. She is in charge of the 4-H program for Clearwater County, so she has her phone handy to answer questions until she returns to work.

The Fraser Weed Coalition will hold a meeting on Thursday, July 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fraser Community Center. For more information, call Linda Beard at 435-4806.

Rosena and Lanis Aultz enjoyed having three of their daughters home for a visit.  Elisa Likins and her daughters, Erin and Kaitlyn, traveled from Nampa to spend the first two weeks of June with her parents.  While Elisa was there, Emily Conder traveled with Lana Finch and her children, Jaci, Quian, Raeli, and Quiara, from Lewiston to spend three days with them.

Emily Conder was asked to participate in Cottonwood’s 4-H Poultry Clinic. She demonstrated proper care and how to show chickens.  She has been asked to be a judge this year at their fair.

RATTLESNAKE ALERT

The Walkers have killed their first rattlesnake at their ranch in 13 years.  The snake was about 30 inches long with 11 rattles. Other people have reported seeing rattlesnakes around.  Please use extra caution when outdoors.

Happy Birthdays go out to Larry Schlader and Keith Lutes on July 7.
