Orofino splits doubleheader against St. Maries

The Orofino Merchants came away from their league doubleheader against St. Maries with a lackluster split of Orofino 7-12, St. Maries 8-3.

The Merchants had a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning of the first game, but several fielding gaffes and errors allowed St. Maries to mount a comeback and claim an 8-7 win.

"We gave away too much in the field and at the plate," Merchants coach Jeff Wright said. "We struck out 13 times against pitching that was just OK, and we had very little clutch hitting."

But Orofino got another early lead in the second game and made it stand up, as they cruised to a 12-3 triumph, fueled by six St. Maries errors.

Ethan Gilliam collected four RBI in the win, and Dylan Midstokke and Seth Melton each had six strikeouts.
