Hike near Elk Creek Reservoir leads to unplanned night in the woods

Four teenagers that were on a camping trip spent an unplanned night in the woods near Elk Creek Reservoir, located near Elk River, Sunday night. According to a news release from the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office the teens were hiking around 7:30 p.m. Sunday near the reservoir’s swimming area. When they didn’t return family members called authorities shortly after 1 a.m. Monday.

County search and rescue dog teams and all-terrain vehicle teams searched the area but the teens walked out on their own to their camp around 7 a.m. Monday. According to the news release the four were cold and wet but were otherwise in good health. They told deputies they had been walking on a trail when it got dark so stopped to spend the night.
