   Adam Barron, 15, a sophomore at Orofino High School, recently took top honors at the 1999 Idaho State Trap shoot, which was held at Lewiston Gun Club. Adam shot for three consecutive days to win two state championships.

   New inductees to the Timberline High School Honor Society in May are Tricia Burgess, Lynette Dobson, Michelle Crutcher, Julie Wright, Melanie McBride, Serenity Staggs, Heather Nelson, Marty Hutchins, Dan Rayner, Todd Kinard, Jeff Good, Rocky Barlow, Chris Lange, Dan Vanderpool, Greg Robison, and Tomas Rayner. Pat Bennett is their advisor.

   John and Joanne Hutchinson will be grand marshals of the Orofino Celebrations, Inc. Lumberjack Days Parade.

   A number of students  were inducted into the Orofino High School Honor Society in May. Inducted were Karl Riley, Grant VanBrundt, Jacob Lacock, Chad Steinbruecker, Kristi Wessels, Staci Sutton, Cherish Wilmarth, Charlene Davis, Christina Reggear, Brenda Jackson, Sean Short, Jennifer Lathrop, Justin Greene, Mandi Kaufman, Jeremy Staab and Vickie Freeman.

   Stephanie Elaine Finke of Orofino and Douglas Larry Frank of Coeur d’Alene will be married July 8 at St. Theresa’s Church.

   Mike Wilson is leaving Orofino to take a position as a registered nurse at Salem General Hospital in Salem, OR. Mike served as chief of the Orofino Volunteer Fire Department for five years, as Clearwater County Coroner for about five years, has been a member of the Emergency Medical Technician squad for 14 years and belonged to the Back Country Medical Rescue Team.

   The Orofino Airport was completely covered by the rampaging Clearwater River and traffic was halted on U. S. Highway 12 for 18 hours. Businesses on Johnson Avenue were just above the water level.

   Water from the river cut through the railroad tracks and filled the park. About 45 to 50 families were unable to use their homes.

   Pierce-The creeks around town, Orofino, Canal and Rhoades Creeks are running near banks and some places are over the banks. The bridges are taking a beating from the debris and water. The 3.08 inches of rain this week has made a soggy mess of yards and helped fill creeks.

   Complete modernization of the unloading and handling facilities for bulk grain has been effected by Orofino Rochdale Co. this past spring.

   Sale of the Peck Grain Growers facilities to the Lewiston Grain Growers Inc. followed the decision of the directors to merge with the Lewiston Cooperative.

75 Years Ago

   Work will start soon on plans for a wayside beautification of the first four miles of the Lewis Clark Highway extending from the Clearwater Bridge in Orofino. The plans call for expenditures of $5180 now on hand and furnished by the federal government. Between 1200 and 1500 trees, maples, Russian olives and Siberian Elms are to be planted along each side of the highway. A Blue Spruce hedge is contemplated along Riverside Cemetery.

80 Years Ago

   The estimates for the Lewis Clark Highway between Cherry Lane and Peck are now being completed and it is expected the road can be placed under contract by the latter part of August so that construction can be started in September.

   Citizens and members of the Orofino Volunteer Fire Department answered the first call of the new siren when an alarm was sent in from Day’s Addition to quench a fire started in a manure pile. Both hose wagons and over 100 people were on the scene in less than four minutes after the siren sounded.
