Thorntons enjoy vacation in Alaska

By Norma Brand and Cathy Walker

Lyle and Jan Thornton drove to Seattle, WA, on the weekend of May 31.  They spent the night with Lyle’s son, Travis, and his children, Krystal and Hunter, before catching a flight to Anchorage, AK on June 1.

Jan’s son, Danny Sego, his wife, Sylvia, and son, Lance, met them at the airport and drove them to their home at Soldotna, which is on the Kenai Peninsula.  Lyle commented that they had better weather in Alaska than we had here in Fraser.  There was snow on the mountains, but not on the ground.

They drove to Homer and spent three days on the ocean fishing for halibut.  Lyle and Danny spent one night on the boat.  They anchored in a quiet bay for the evening, and then got up early for more fishing.

A friend of Danny’s owns a smaller boat, which they took salmon fishing.  Lyle caught the first king salmon, it weighed 35 pounds.

One day Lyle stayed home and took care of eighteen-month old Lance while Danny took Jan and Sylvia out salmon fishing.

They had a great time and Lyle really enjoyed his first vacation in five years.  Lyle and Jan brought home 100 pounds of halibut and 50 pounds of king salmon.

On Father’s Day, they had a fish fry and Jan added crab and prawns to the menu.  Jan’s daughter, Denice Brando, her friend, Joe Schwantz, and Denice’s children, Ayla and Dylan Campbell and Drew Schranz came to dinner.  It sounds like a wonderful menu, especially when it’s enjoyed with your family.

We hear Lyle finally has his computer running again and can enjoy all the pictures he took on their vacation to Alaska.
