Orofino defeats LC
in doubleheader
The Orofino
Merchants picked up a pair of tight league wins June 10, as their
pitchers limited the Lewis-Clark Cubs to four hits in both sides of
a doubleheader.
The scores
were 5-2 and 6-5.
Ethan
Gilliam started the opener for Orofino, and blanked the Cubs from
the second inning through the sixth.
In the
second game, Merchants pitcher Ricky Breeden weathered a
mistake-filled fourth inning that saw L-C score three runs. Orofino
finally solved Cubs pitcher Allen Willey in the bottom of the
fourth, with Justin Gering's RBI hit getting the ball rolling.
In the
following inning, Nick Pomponio smacked a two-run double.
The
Merchants (4-0 overall and in league) dodged an L-C rally in the
seventh. After back-to-back doubles pulled the Cubs within one,
pitcher Seth Melton got a flyout, groundout and strikeout to end the
game.
"Any time
we beat (the Cubs) twice, that's good for us," Orofino coach Jeff
Wright said.
The
Merchants will play host to Sandpoint in the doubleheader today
