Evening temperatures cool in Fraser

By Norma Brand

The first 11 days in June have flown by. Evening temperatures have been cool; the thermometer registered a low of 40 degrees on Saturday and Sunday evening. Thunderstorms threatened but very little rain fell. The skies were cloudy on Monday; a cool breeze kept the temperature in the 50-degree range. A rain and hailstorm did blow through late in the afternoon. Remember that it is still spring, so Mother Nature may still have some surprises up her sleeves.

Karen and Mark Fowler drove to Spokane, WA early Thursday morning to spend the day with friends. On their return trip they visited with Mark’s mother, Barbara Fowler, in Lewiston and spent the night with her. When they returned home on Friday, they discovered their horse herd had increased. Their mare, Akita, now has an energetic baby to take care of. She is very protective so they haven’t been able to tell if it is a boy or girl. We will let you know more about the little one as time goes on.

Oreta and Dale Stuart have been busy working their cattle. Oreta is feeling better since her back surgery, so she is ready to do some traveling again.

Bobbi Boyer reported she and Clint took their children, Macoy and Breyer, fishing at Campbell’s Pond. They had a great time and brought lots of fish home. More fishing trips are planned for the summer.

Macoy is a member of the Fraser Boosters 4-H Club in the Clover Buds division. His projects this year are bugs, cat, and terrariums.

Breyer has been busy helping her Grandma Marie care for the animals at the Armitage farm. She especially enjoys the two new kittens that came to live at the farm.

School is out for the summer. Michele and Cory Brown’s daughters, Izzy, Caitlin, Abby and Samantha have time to enjoy being home; they are looking forward to playing with their cousins Grace and Lydia McIntosh and Spencer and Natalie Brown when they vacation in Fraser.

Remember the memorial for Mary Ann Erickson. It will be held at Fraser Park on Saturday, June 13 at 1 p.m. This is a potluck picnic; the family will provide the meat, so bring a dish to share and your own beverage. Also bring your own chairs so you can enjoy the day while you visit with the family and friends. Call Terry Lashley at 476-4109 if you have any questions.

Father’s Day will be here soon. This year the 4-H Clubs of Fraser and Weippe invite you to join them on Saturday, June 20 for their annual breakfast. Serving will start at 7 a.m. and end around 10:30. They have always served a great breakfast. let’s plan on attending this year. See you there!

First Stop Java near Weippe is owned and operated by Cindy Koerling. The shop has a place to sit down and have a cup of coffee and a cookie or scone. Ronnie Zinc and her husband Kelly and Cindy’s husband Billy were enjoying a cup and visiting when the Brand’s stopped by to get acquainted. Stop in the next time you are in Weippe. She bakes great cookies.

The Beard’s returned to Fraser on Wednesday after spending several weeks in Sun River, OR. They enjoyed golfing and visiting with family and friends.

The final hearing for the water rights for the Fraser Pines Subdivision took place on Thursday. The hearing started at 9 a.m. and convened at 3 p.m.

Steve and Norma Brand, Mike and Linda Beard, and Jerry Moore protested the water rights for the subdivision. Over the years, Fraser families have spent money to have wells drilled, many have not hit water. The possible affect the two commercial wells could have on the Fraser Community is a concern, as many of our wells have a limited capacity and yield less than 10 gpm of water flow.

At the request of Norma Brand, John Welhan, Research Geologist, Idaho Geological Survey, Affiliate Faculty, Idaho State University prepared a technical report of the hydrogeologic analysis of the ground-water analysis of the ground-water situation in the Fraser Community.

The Idaho Department of Water Resources requested John appear before the IDWR at the contested case hearing scheduled for June 4, 2009 in Orofino. He was subpoenaed to participate as an objective expert witness for IDWR and not as a witness for either the applicants or the protestants. Alan Gay of USKH Inc from Spokane, WA provided testimony on behalf of the developers, JR Cascade and Eric Richardson.

The Fraser Plateau is bordered by Jim Ford Canyon on the north, Lolo Canyon on the south and Big Canyon on the west. John’s analysis shows that the situation on this plateau can’t support anyone’s contention that there is plenty of ground water to go around, and more information about the sources and rates of replenishment of the aquifer should be studied.

Happy birthday to Bev Bailey on June 14 and to her husband Barry on June 15.

Happy anniversary to Cory and Michele Brown on June 15.
