Fraser families busy over Memorial Day

The weather in Fraser was sunny and warm over the Memorial Day weekend. The Camas Fest took place Friday evening, May 22 and Saturday, May 23. Cathy and Guy Walker participated in the Dutch Oven Cook-off at the Weippe Mini-Park on Friday evening. There were eight teams consisting of the Walkers, Sid and Christine Brown, Marge and Ed Kuchynka, Norm Steadman, Terry Summerfield, Melissa and Chris Mayberry, Christen Lalonde and her dad Jim and Mike and Jan Nakamura. Cathy reported they received the People’s Choice Award for their Barbecued Spare Ribs. They also entered a dessert and January Beans. Tickets were sold and purchasers enjoyed a very tasty dinner served by the contestants.
The melodrama “The Vile Veterinarian” took place at 7 p.m.
On Saturday morning The Retreat to Weippe Run/Walk took place at 8:30 a.m. Cathy Walker reported she took third place in her age group. There was a good turnout for the three mile course.
Lyle and Jan Thornton invited family and friends to their home on Thornton Road for a potluck picnic on Memorial Day. They were Carl and RoseAnna Thornton, Peggy and Reggie Ball and Steve and Norma Brand. Jan’s two-year-old granddaughter, Emma Lyn Boller, spent the weekend with her and had a good time at the picnic.
A donkey basketball game was held at Timberline Schools on Thursday, May 21. The Weippe team consisted of five members of the Fraser Community; Jake Armitage, Cory Brown, Derek Brown, Heather Christopherson and Cathy Walker, plus Carl Stemrich and Lori and Mike McMillen of Weippe. According to Cathy Walker it was great fun and challenging. The Weippe team won their game 8 to 6 over the Timberline Schools student team.
Congratulations to Lydia and Jody Harris on the birth of their daughter Harley Oceyene. Harley was born on May 24 at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.
The family of Mary Ann Erickson will hold a memorial for her on Saturday, June 13 at Fraser Park, starting at 1 p.m. There will be a potluck picnic; the family will provide the meat, so bring your favorite dish to share. Donna Stickney and Norma Brand attended the Silver Tea Event of P.E.O. Chapter CD on Tuesday, May 26. It was held at the High Country Inn. It was held at the High Country Inn. Members were asked to wear something they really enjoyed and a hat if they had one. The meal consisted of a salad, salmon, peas, potatoes, bread and dessert. Everyone had a wonderful time. The chapter will meet again in September after a summer break.
The Fraser Cemetery was decorated for the Memorial Day celebration. Families and friends took time to look over the gravesites and reminisce over the lives of families buried there.
Norma sends her apologies to the family of Caryl Smolinski for leaving her name off the list of special people who were remembered on Memorial Day.
The 4-H Clubs from Fraser and Weippe are holding their Father’s Day Breakfast on Saturday, June 20 this year. They will start serving at 7 a.m. The menu will be ham, pancakes, biscuits and sausage gravy, eggs, coffee and juice. Please come and support this event. Pete Kingen reported his wife Janet was admitted to the Clearwater Valley Hospital this week. She is still having medical problems and hopes to be home soon. Pete says so many people have asked him about Janet’s medical condition he (and Janet) want people to know the diagnosis, which is Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH) or backbone growth fusion.
Sharon and Mike McHone traveled to Walla Walla, WA for the Welsh Pony Spring Fling Show they manage. The judge this year was Wyn Jones from the UK. He works for one of the most famous Welsh Pony studs in the UK named COED-COCH. The show was ranked a Double Gold Show, there were 48 ponies entered.
The Midnight Sun Farm entered four ponies; they were the stallion Gayfields Bling Bling, and three mares, Gayfields Drama Queen, Reba Mac and All That Glitters. Bling won Reserve Supreme Grand Champion and Drama Queen won her class in the Junior Mare Division. Ask Sharon about the show, she has all the details and loves to describe the event. Mike and Sharon’s son Jeff and his family traveled to Walla Walla to help with the show. Jeff had the honor of handling Reba Mac in the show ring.
The McHones have five new Welsh Pony babies at the farm, four girls and one boy. One more baby is expected this month, which will bring the total up to six.
Growers are needed for the 2009 season Orofino Farmer’s Market starting in July. A vendor’s workshop meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 10 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at UI Extension Office, 2200 Michigan Ave., Orofino. Info? Call 476-4434.
