Logging truck wrecks on Southwick Grade

A logging truck’s brake malfunction resulted in a 100-gallon diesel fuel spill Monday morning, according to the Idaho State Police (ISP).

A loaded 1992 International logging truck driven by 49-year-old Phillip L. Fleener was westbound on the Southwick Grade near Kendrick May 10. At 7:35 a.m. at milepost 1.2 the truck’s brakes lost air pressure, according to ISP.

Fleener used an access road as a runaway truck ramp and managed to stop the truck in the trees. Approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled, which classified the incident as a regulatory hazmat spill, according to ISP. No waterways were affected. Fleener was not injured and was not wearing his seatbelt, according to ISP. He was cited for unsafe equipment.

Cpl. Smith was the investigating officer, with assistance from Sgt. Doty and Troopers Gilbertson, Youngren and Kitchen.
