Supplemental Levy Election on May 18

Based upon the loss of state funding for public education, the Joint School District #171 Board of Trustees will submit a supplemental levy ballot for $1,740,000 to voters on Tuesday, May 18. The amount is $250,000 more than last year’s levy.

Polls will be open from noon to 8 p.m. on May 18 at Cavendish School, Peck Elementary, Pierce Community Center, U.S. Forest Service, Weippe City Hall, Orofino Junior High and Orofino Elementary School.

The supplemental levy, approved annually by voters, becomes part of the district’s general budget and provides over 20 percent ($1 of every $5) of the general budget. About 85 percent of general budget expenditure is for staff (salaries and benefits). The general budget pays for most district expenses including building utilities, building maintenance, transportation, salaries, benefits, textbooks and supplies.

This levy is for ongoing maintenance and operation expenses. It is not for construction purposes.

Based on 2009 market values and home-owners exemptions, an increase in the supplemental levy of $250,000 would result in the following:

Property assessed at $100,000: an increase of $22.04 per year or $1.84 per month.

Property assessed at $200,000: an increase of $44.07 per year or $3.67 per month.

Based on 2009 market values and home-owner exemptions, the $1,740,000 supplemental levy would result in a $153.37 tax for a property assessed at $100,000 and $306.74 tax for a property assessed at $200,000. Even with the requested increase, school property tax rates for Joint School District #171 are below regional averages.

Please contact the School District Office at 476-5593 if you have any questions about the supplemental levy or about programs offered at our schools.
