Senior project focuses on recycling
Timberline senior class valedictorian, Tanner Jared, chose recycling as his
senior class project. Fueled by his dislike for wasting natural resources and a
desire to take part in conservation efforts, Jared is providing local residents
a convenient means to recycle newspapers.
Jared’s project began in Feb. with research into recycling, Convinced of the value of recycling, as well as the need, he chose to focus on newspaper. Discussions with Pierce mayor Greg Gerot and a presentation to the Pierce City Council, as well as discussion with Weippe mayor Norm Steadman led to the placement of recycling bins in both communities.
Jared built the recycling bins and estimates that 10 hours of work went into them.
The project was introduced to Pierce residents by means of a letter written by Jared and enclosed in the monthly utility billings. Following placement of the bins, he was pleased to see an immediate response of newspapers being deposited.
Besides becoming familiar with the issue of recycling and taking steps to make it more available, Jared says he learned valuable lessons from the project. Time management issues, organization and dealing with unforeseen problems like runny paint and poor weather, all combined to make this a valuable learning experience.
“Although this project cost me a lot personally,” Jared said, “I think it was well worth it. I learned that good things come from hard work, not to procrastinate, and a thing or two about recycling.
He added, “I think that I made an attempt to better our community, and through this was able to learn that good things come from hard work.”
