Fraser's Mother's Day dinner

By Norma Brand and Cathy Walker

The sign at the entrance to the Fraser Community Center has a colorful reminder of the Mother’s Day Prime Rib dinner added to it.  It was designed by Norma Brand just for this occasion.  Her husband, Steve, helped her install it on Monday, April 28.

The prime rib dinner is a fundraiser event for the community center.  The proceeds will make it possible to add an indoor bathroom to the center.

Last year the board members handled the event, they will have help this year from the newly formed Fraser Community Club.  The Ladies’ Get Together Club has been asked to make home made pies for the dessert.

Tickets are available for 4:30, 5:30, or 6:30 p.m.  Cost is adults $12, six through 12 years old $6, and five years and under are free.  Take out orders are also available.

This event is a fun way to treat your mom or wife to a tasty meal and you will have time to visit with your neighbors while enjoying an extra cup of coffee.

Remember to schedule time on Saturday, May 10, for this event.

Thanks Judy for the reminder in last week’s “Happenings on the Hilltop.

It’s a busy time for the farmers in Northern Idaho. Donna Brown reported they started planting the spring crops at the beginning of this week.  Rain had been predicted, but it has held off so far.

The Clearwater Highway District has been busy cleaning up the dirt and rocks that have accumulated in the ditches over the winter.  Thanks for all you do for the communities on the hilltop.

Clearwater Power Company held a town meeting at the VFW Hall in Orofino on Wednesday, April 30.  The meeting was to start at 7 p.m., but members of the Coop continued to arrive and it had to be delayed until they were seated.  Over 80 members attended the meeting.  Did you know that the members own 35 percent of the company?

General Manager, Dave Hagen, spoke about the activities that have been completed for the year of 2007.  They continue to test poles and have changed 559 poles, some have been in the ground since 1937; 23 miles of new distribution lines have been added, these are primarily under ground; 326 new accounts have been added to the system.

Steve and Norma Brand attended the meeting and were pleased to hear that there won’t be a rate increase this year.

Recognition was given to the linemen of the company. They worked throughout the winter to keep power flowing to our homes. They truly are the unsung heroes of our power company.  Thank you, we appreciate all of you.

Our graduating seniors may want to look into becoming a Journeyman Lineman. Dave Hagen pointed out there is a shortage of linemen and it’s a great opportunity.  If there is an interest in this field, you can call Clearwater Power for more information at (888) 743-1501, toll free.

The Idaho Farm Bureau Federation is sponsoring a fundraiser to help the Joyce Livestock Co. and LU Ranching Co.  They defeated the federal government after a decade-long fight over federal rangeland water rights. This court case decision could benefit other landowners who face similar actions.  They won the case, but were refused the right to recover attorney fees, now they face financial ruin.  To learn more about this case go to www.luranchingandjoycelivestockcov.blogspot.com

Fraser Pinochle Party

Janet and Pete Kingen want everyone to know about the date change for the next pinochle party.  The Mother’s Day Prime Rib dinner is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, so the pinochle party will be held the following Saturday.  Put May 17 on your calendar, and the time is 1 p.m. so bring a potluck lunch to share.

Note the time change - Fraser Community Club will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 8.  We will have a brief meeting and set the center up for the prime rib dinner. No potluck at this meeting. For more information, call Linda Beard at 435-4806

Linda Beard’s daughter, Sharon Klein, graduated from WSU on May 2.  The ceremonies took place at the Spokane Convention Center.  She now has her Doctor of Pharmacy diploma and plans to take her Pharmacy License tests for the states of Oregon and Washington.  Sharon will be employed by Rite Aide in Corvallis, OR.  She plans to do some traveling before settling down to a full time job.  Congratulations Sharon and good luck.

Mike and Linda Beard are back at their ranch after spending 15 days on the Island of Kauai.  Mike’s daughter, Missy Beard, Andrew Leith, and their son, Colton, Andrew’s parents, and Linda’s mother, Claudia Larson, joined them. They had great weather and enjoyed collecting seashells, made hats out of palm leaves, toured coffee and chocolate farms, played golf, hiked, and spent time on the beach.

Donna and Danny Brown’s daughter, Danette McIntosh, and her husband, Josh, have been vacationing at the farm.  Their daughter, Grace, has enjoyed the attention of Grandma Donna and Grandpa Danny.  Grace loves tea parties, so Aunt Michele Brown and cousins, Izzy, Caitlin, Abby, and Samantha, spent one afternoon having tea.  Cousin Emma Brown had to miss out this time; she had other plans for that day.  Donna reported everyone had a good time.

This is the last call for anyone wanting to enter the Dutch Oven Cookoff  “Cooking along the Trail” that will be held on Friday, May 23, at the Weippe Mini Park.  There is no entry fee.  There are three categories to enter; meat main dish, vegetable, and dessert.  Enter as many categories as you like.  Registration forms can be picked up at the Weippe Public Library and need to be turned in by Saturday, May 10.  Prizes will be awarded for the winner in each category.  Food must be prepared on site and ready to serve at 5 p.m.  If you have any questions, please call the library at 435-4058.

The Timberline Schools’ concert for kindergarten through sixth grades was well attended on Thursday, May 1.  All of the elementary students sang songs and 3rd through 6th grades played their recorders, all under the direction of Mrs. Patty Blain.  Everyone enjoyed the concert and afterwards refreshments were served.

Happy Birthday goes out to Sandy Moore on May 14.  Happy Anniversary to Guy and Cathy Walker on May 15.
