Spell Whiz Fundraiser Saturday, May 3

By Lito Ilagan

Anna Grimaldo has once more captured our imagination. The two-time Inland Northwest Spelling Bee Champion is headed again to Washington D.C. on May 29-30, 2008 to pit spelling skills with 288 other kids from all over the country and vie for the top honor of being the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion.

For this, her family’s circle of friends and supporters has once more joined together to help raise funds for their trip to Washington D.C. which has become prohibitive due to the rising cost of gas prices. Instead of flying from Lewiston, they will instead travel first to Spokane and fly from there so the whole family will go and be there for Anna.

The fundraising event will be held on Saturday, May 3, at the Community Center located at the basement of Pizza Factory. It will start at 11 a.m. and continue till early afternoon with Filipino specialties and other Asian dishes being the staple food for the occasion.

As with the previous year, there will be no pre-determined amount to pay for the food; the fundraisers will just rely on the kindness and generosity of people who would come and any amount would definitely help Anna and her family.

Everyone is invited to come and more than knowing how community members have come to love Asian food especially the Filipino dishes, the fundraisers are expecting people will come to show their appreciation and support for Anna who at a young age has already brought honor and prestige to our school and community.
