Students decide what’s for
lunch at OES

If you could pick your
favorite lunch to eat at school, what would it be? Mrs. Jageman, Mrs. Weger and
Mrs. D. Wilson’s classes have been busy learning about menu planning. Carmen
Griffith, Food Service Director and Linda Harrelson, Orofino Elementary kitchen
manager, spent time with the classes talking about nutrition, federal and state
requirements, school lunches and how to plan a menu. Great discussion took place
about healthy choices and what goes into the menu planning process.
The students were given a
list of the different components, pictures of various food items and a
disposable lunch tray to try out their ideas. Not only did they choose the
protein, fruit, vegetable, bread/grain and dairy but they also looked at the
overall appearance of their meal.
Each class submitted three
difference lunches. Six were chosen and will be served at
“I was very impressed with
their interest in school lunch, what they eat and their ideas and questions,”
stated Carmen. “I love having the opportunity to help them understand the lunch
program and how it works. I believe educating our students to make healthy
choices is the beginning of a healthy and happy life.”
The following is a list of
the food choices the students made for May 3-14: May 3-hamburger, French fries,
mixed veggies and oranges; May 4-pepperoni pizza, green salad with garbanzo
beans, apple slices and brownie; May 5-taco, baby carrots, kiwi and rice crispy
treat; May 6-cook’s choice; May 11-barbecue pork on a wheat bun, macaroni salad,
