Fraser's April showers

By Norma Brand and Cathy Walker

Fraser’s little March lamb got short changed this year.  Here we are in the month of April and we are still getting hit with snow showers.  On the night of Friday, April 4th, we couldn’t find the little fellow after four inches of show fell.  “White on White” is like trying to find a polar bear in a snow storm. It CAN”T be done!

The temperature on Monday, April 7 warmed up to 44 degrees and most of the snow is gone.  Maybe we will get to enjoy some beautiful spring days before summer gets here.  The daffodils and the tulips are starting to appear.  Mother Nature must have given them the high sign to keep us humans from getting a case of spring fever.

How many of you guessed who the “Mystery Child” was in “where have all the children gone?” Sharon McHone figured out who she was when she saw the picture.  She put all the clues together and called Peggy Ball to let her know she had identified her.  It was Peggy Ball.

The Clearwater Tribune would appreciate more pictures from the people on the hill for this column.  Don’t be bashful, take a picture down to their office and supply them with some clues.  They will do the rest.

On Saturday, April 5, Amanda Judd and her children, Blake and McKenna, drove out to the Judd Ranch for a visit.  They are moving to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in a week to join Elvita’s grandson, Brian, who is stationed there.  Blake and McKenna helped Loretta make cookies and before the afternoon was over the cookies had disappeared.  They had a great time forming the dough into small balls and pressing down with a fork to flatten them out.  Blake is five years old and McKenna is three.

Elvita’s granddaughter, Raina Judd, and her friend, Casey Field, from Orofino came for lunch on Saturday.

On Saturday evening Loretta, Elvita, and Joan Kroupa had dinner with Marie Green and her daughter, Wilma Shedd, at the Green farm.  It sounded like they had a great time recalling old memories.

Marie Green had a visit from Norma Brand on Wednesday, April 2.

Mike Green returned to Wallace, Idaho, on Thursday, he planned to return to Fraser on the following Monday.

The Dutch Oven Cooking Class that was held at the Weippe Discovery Center on Saturday, April 5, was a full class.  There were nine cooking enthusiast who were present and eager to learn.  The participants were able to help during the class; from making rolls and preparing the food to the actual cooking in the Dutch ovens.  The cooks with their delicious recipes were Marge and Ed Kuchyhka, sweet and sour and salmon pesto; Terri Summerfield, sparkling potatoes; Guy and Cathy Walker, rolls; and Norm Steadman, triple berry dessert.  Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal and learned that whatever you can cook in a regular oven can be done in a Dutch oven.

The Camas Festival and Friends of Weippe Discovery Center will be having a Dutch oven cook-off “Cooking along the Trail” on Friday, May 23, at the Weippe Mini Park.  If you want to participate in this cook-off, cooks must pre-register by May 10.  There are NO entry fees.  Registration forms can be picked up at the Weippe Public Library or by calling 435-4058.  The three categories are meat main dish, vegetable, and dessert.  Enter one or all three.  Prizes will be awarded in each category and also an overall people’s choice award.

On Sunday morning, April 6, Cathy Walker and her son, Jonathan, visited with Elvita and Loretta Judd.  Cathy shared with them the pictures she and Guy took of their New Zealand vacation.

The Weed Coalition held a meeting to distribute chemicals at the Fraser Community Center on Tuesday, April 8.  If you were not able to attend, please call Mike Beard at 435-4806.  There will be a meeting concerning the Deyo Reservoir on Thursday, April 10, at the Weippe Discovery Center at 6:30 p.m.  The land was donated by the Deyo family to the Department of Fish and Game for the purpose of building a fishing reservoir.  The meeting will review the progress of the last two years and the anticipated results of the next two years.

There will be a pinochle party at the Fraser Community Center on Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m.  A potluck dinner will follow.  If you have any questions, please call Linda Beard at 435-4806.

The Democratic Central Committee will be meeting at the Weippe Discovery Center on Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m.  The public is encouraged to attend.  The Clearwater County Treasurer, Jeannie Johnson; Clearwater County Auditor and Recorder, Carrie Bird; and Clearwater County Assessor, Mellisa Stewart, who are up for re-election, will be there to answer questions.  There is a possibility of state candidates also attending.  If you have any questions, please call Jim Webster at 435-4622.

It looks like the third and forth grade classes at Timberline Schools will be able to study the history of the Weippe area soon.  The book is the result of three area residents, Carolyn Lage, Leo Binder, and Dianne Gerot.  Mike Green described their efforts in an article in last week’s Clearwater Tribune entitled “New book on Weippe history out this spring.”  Congratulations to everyone, we know the students will benefit from this book.

The Clearwater County Commissioners will present a draft zoning map to the planning and zoning department.  The Commissioners believe this change will help preserve what is left of the county’s good farm land and timber ground.  Keep an eye out for further information in the Clearwater Tribune.  There will be public hearings on this issue in the near future.  Notices will be published with the hearing date and time.  If you are interested in preserving our country life style, you will want to attend this meeting.

Mark and Karen Fowler’s son, James, is attending college in Pocatello, Idaho.  He says it’s a lot of hard work, but he is focusing on a degree in forestry.

Timberline School’s Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) will be having their 1st Annual Talent Show on Friday, April 25, at 6 p.m. at Timberline Schools.  The cost for the talent show is $2 per person.  There will also be a spaghetti dinner fundraiser starting at 5 p.m.

The Fraser Cemetery Board will be holding a Budget Meeting on Monday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m. at Cathy Walker’s home.

Happy Birthdays go out to Jadan Dahl on April 15 and Maryann McKinnon on April 16.
