CLEARWATER TRIBUNE HOME

APRIL 10, 2008

Clearwater Substance Abuse Workgroup town hall meetings

CSAW will be joining 1600 other communities around the United States hosting the 2008 Town Hall Meetings on underage drinking. These meetings are being held around the country the months of March and April.

CSAW received a $500 grant from SAMHSA and will be hosting two events this year:

·  April 23, at 7 p.m. at Timberline High School

·  April 24, at 6:30 p.m. at Orofino High School.

Students from each school will be working with Amy Bartoo from Idaho Drug Free Youth during the day and then will present the evening program.  The evening program will involve both youth and caring adults from the community. An ice-cream social is planned for each event along with a sign-up and drawing for several MP-3 players to be given away.

The town hall meetings are to raise awareness of the public health dangers of underage drinking, and steps that parents, community leaders and concerned citizens can take to combat and prevent it.  The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is sponsoring these meetings along with the Federal Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking and state and local organizations.

The scope of underage drinking problem is highlighted by a new SAMHSA report that found:

·   28.3 percent of 12-20 year old are current alcohol drinkers.

·   This same group drank on an average of 5.9 days in the past month and consumed an average of 4.9 drinks per day

·   On the days they drank, they consumed more drinks per day than persons aged 21 or older.

The meetings will brig together public officials, parents and youths with community leaders and organizations in health, education, law enforcement, highway safety as well as businesses.  The goal is to help people find ways to implement recommendations of the Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking.

The nationwide and local meetings will provide greater insight into the problem of underage drinking and steps for preventing it by reducing demand, availability and access.  Parents and other concerned citizens will be given knowledge and tools to address the problem of underage drinking in their communities.
