School Board votes 3-2 to close OJHS

Orofino Junior High School students will move to Orofino Elementary School and Orofino High School for the 2010-2011 school year following at 3-2 passage of a motion to that effect at a specially called meeting of the Jt. School District 171 board, held April 6.

The motion, which leaves current sixth grade students at OES and moves current seventh grade students to OHS for the 2010-2011 term, included a provision that existing forest funds and proceeds from sale of properties currently on the market be used to construct 10 additional classrooms in the district. Six of those will be built at OHS, and four at Timberline Schools.

The motion also provided the OJHS gym be used for physical education classes.

Board member John Schwartz presented the motion, and Amy Jared seconded. Chairman Don Ebert joined them in voting in favor. Members Alyce Arnsberg and Theresa Graber voted against the motion.

The board voted on Jan. 25 of this year to move students, citing declining enrollment, the need for costly repairs at Orofino Junior High School, including removal of asbestos and equipment replacement, and the economic savings provided by the move.
