Proud Grandma
Maxine Johnstun is a typical grandmother. Her granddaughter Laura Meckley and her German friend Emily, both Junior Girl Scouts, completed their service project. They had to complete a minimum of 15 hours and other prerequisites to earn a Capital Bronze Award (silver and gold awards are only earned at the Cadet and Senior level).
The two volunteers had a brilliant idea in mind for their project. Laura and Emily worked all summer long separating, sorting, and marking shelves with teen books. The last four bookcases in the Children’s Reading Room are now reserved for the Juvenile fiction section. Each teen book is marked with a circled star at the Grofenwoehr town library. The girl’s mothers were junior leader and co-leader of this library project which resulted in a published article in the Bavarian American, a monthly English language magazine for the location where the two girls live.
The Graf library held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Teen Reading Center to celebrate the two youth volunteers who made it happen!
Laura is the 12-year-old daughter of Douglas and Jan Meckley who are living and working in Germany.
