   Orofino Elementary students placing in the Regional Science Fair in Lewiston are Dustin Wilheim, Holly Gentry, Danielle Curtis, Seth Danielson, J.J. Stanley, Josh Danielson and Timberly Clift.

   After 23 years with the forest service Juanita Cooper is retiring

    A plaque to honor all who have served in the armed forces has been placed on a stone in front of the Veterans of Foreign Wars building.

   Weippe-Congratulations to the students who contributed to the “Students in Print” in the Lewiston Tribune. The winners from Weippe Middle School include 1st Amy Crutcher; 2nd Ryan West; 3rd Melissa McBride; 4th Pam Wolfe; and 5th Jeremy Billups. From Pierce Elementary Wesley Blackburn 4th grade received 2nd place.

   Emergency Medical Technician Steve McGill was recently presented a certificate for outstanding service to the community by the Orofino VFW Auxiliary.

   A group of Orofino Junior High boys will participate in an AAU sanctioned basketball tournament at Yakima. Boys participating are Dave Schwartz, Jeff Wilson, Doug Adams, Ryan Dennison, Jeff Farley, Nels Kludt, Doug Lambrecht, Tim Newland, Bucky Huelett, Mark Pishl and Pat Musselman.

   Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Dutro announce the engagement of their daughter Julie to Rory Roby son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Roby.

   Trailer sales in the area are expanding and Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Bittleston are holding a Grand Opening of their new business for Clearwater Homes Sales on Hwy 12.

   The new city clerk office was officially opened when Mary Avery, clerk and Ruby Philpot moved from the Star Motor Freight to the newly remodeled quarters in city hall. A new garage was built for the fire department equipment several years ago and the old station was remolded to house the city clerk, mayor and police chief offices as well as council chambers.

   Grade 4-Mrs. Pishl-John Farbo, Mary Hopper, Jay O’Keefe, Erlene Pickett, Julie Seeley, Mitch Williams and Earl Vicory have completed their six book reports.

   Dr. Jack Fairley shot 192 in the singles Class B in the two day event of the Camas Prairie Handicap held in Lewiston. He broke all the birds the first day for a perfect 100.

   Sandra McCollister, seventh grade, was the only student in the Orofino Junior High to earn straight “A” grades for the quarter ended reports Wilbur Montgomery, principal.

   Unemployment payments were made to 614 persons at the end March, but more work looms as sawmills resume work this month.

50 Years Ago

   The high school Dramatics Club will present “The Inner Willy” a comedy in three acts. Members of the cast are Nancy Rambeau, Mary Jean Thomsen, Gary Ball, Diane Ball, Janet Kayler, Joan Wargi, Janice Hurlburt, Roger Hurlburt, Jack Mehtala and Carol Franklin.

   Orofino High School will be sending Ron Schilling, Dave Adams, Cecil Stamper, and George Williams to the district boxing tournament in Dayton

   Three girls received straight A’s in the senior high school for the third quarter. They were Joanne Durham, Diane Ball and Joan Heideman.

55 Years Ago

   We never had it so good. That’s what Orofino residents were saying as new freshly filtered water flooded from faucets for the first time in history of the city. The new $125,000 filtration plant was completed last week.

65 Years Ago

   Heavy storms in Headquarters area boomed already raging Clearwater River with a flow showing more than 42,000 second feet at the high mark.

   While the board of education has yet to approve, high school and faculty teachers have voted by approximately 10-1 margin to eliminate spring vacation this year.
