Community Club receives award

The Weippe Community Club was awarded $1,500 from Idaho Humanities Council to help bring Native American performer Dennis Lee Rogers to Weippe for the 8th Annual Camas Festival in May. This year’s theme is “Tales, Trails and Trading.” Rogers will demonstrate several Native American traditions including: the art of sand painting, the use of the hand drum and native flute, and the craft of featherwork in northern traditional and plains dances, as well as demonstrate the hoop dance. The project director is Marge Kuchynka.

This Saturday, March 29 from 9 to 3 the 2nd annual THS Prom Gown Extravaganza will be held in the cafeteria at Timberline High School. About 130 dresses will be available for high school students to borrow for the prom.

Last year Busy Bee Cleaners in Lewiston donated cleaning services for the dresses after the prom. Linda Sutton started this program last year. Linda says she wanted every girl to be able to attend the prom and hopes to continue as long as there is a need for this project. You may call Linda at 435-4637. Almost half of the girls that went to the prom last year were able to use this program. Sherry Schlader of Sherry’s Cakes and Bouquets made personal invitations to each girl.

Comment: Several people have called recently with news for “my” column. Please note this is a column for Weippe and area community members, definitely not “my” column. Feel free to call with news of family happenings, community events, or whatever else you feel residents would want to know. The Clearwater Tribune editor provides this space for you all to put your news. Thanks and keep calling – Judy.
