Mala Curtis, 86, formerly of Orofino

   Mala Curtis, 86, Tacoma, WA, formerly of Orofino, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008 in Tacoma, WA.

   Arrangements are pending.

Motoko Troumbley, 71, Orofino

   Motoko Troumbley died March, 24, 2008 at Clearwater Valley Hospital. She was born March 26, 1936 in Chiba-ken, Japan.

   She married Gerald B. Troumbley June 18, 1958 in Fukuoka, Japan and came to the United States in 1960. She lived in Oceanside, CA from 1960 to 1983, and received citizenship from First Baptist Church in Oceanside, CA. Motoko came to Orofino in 1983. Gerald died on June 18, 1998.

   She resided at Clearwater Rehab and Care in Orofino.

   Among her favorite things was going to the ladies fellowship at the First Baptist Church in Orofino. She loved to travel, go camping, do crafts, and spend time with her grandchildren.

   She is survived by a brother Fumio Miki, and a sister Yoshiko Hanahashi, both of Japan; a daughter, Barbara (Richard) Donner, grandsons Jeffrey, Michael and Nicolas, of Orofino; a son, Bill (Nancy) Troumbley of Lewiston; granddaughter Jamie Sutter and grandson Gerald Troumbley of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Other survivors are son Allen Troumbley, grandsons Timmy, Willie, Trei and granddaughters Nicole and Kayla, all of Orofino, in addition to nieces and nephews in Japan.

   She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald B. Troumbley, sister Sekiko Taketsugu and brother Bernoski Miki

   Viewing will be Tuesday, April 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel and Crematory. A private service for the family will be held later.

Clifford S. Hillman, 92, Lenore

   Clifford S. Hillman of Lenore died Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at the Life Care Center of Lewiston, of natural causes. He was 92.

   He was born on a family farm near the Pine Grove area of Genesee to Arthur S. and Mabel (Johnson) Hillman.

   At age eight, he continued his elementary education in Potlatch. The family then moved to Palouse, where Clifford graduated from Palouse High School in 1931.

   In 1932, at the age of 17, his love for the soil began on the farm of his Swedish grandparents, August and Ida Johnson, in the Genesee Valley. He eventually purchased his own land, raising wheat, barley and pea crops. Clifford continued farming with Uncle George Johnson and Aunt Ethel Johnson in the valley for 35 years.

   Clifford married Evelyn Heimgartner on Sept. 20, 1941. She died in 1989.

   He married Marjorie Broemeling Tyler on May 10, 1991 and she survives at the family home.

   Clifford worked as a logger, an excavator in the Tri-Cities, leveling land with his brother-in-law, Floyd, “Brick” Standley; and he owned and operated a sandpit in Asotin. In his semi-retirement years, he was employed by the state of Idaho Forest Service to seed grasslands. He also worked with the Park Service branch of the Bureau of Land Management.

   A memorial was held Saturday, March 22 at Malcom’s Brower-Wann Funeral Home in Lewiston, with private family interment to follow.

Goldie Mae Packer, 87, Lewiston

   Goldie Mae Packer passed away March 20, 2008 at Lewiston Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lewiston, ID. She was born August 10, 1922 to Arthur and Lucille Montgomery in Elk City, OK.

   The family migrated west to Central California in 1927 where they made their living picking fruit and working on local farms. Goldie graduated from Strathmore Union High School at Porterville followed by junior college in Southern California.

   She later went to work for Douglas Aircraft as a riveter, manufacturing airplanes during the war effort, advancing to supervisor. This is where she met Gene Packer, her husband and companion for over 60 years. After marrying in Seattle in 1945, the two settled at Battle Ridge, Gene’s childhood home near Stites. There they purchased a farm, raised a family and supported a community.

   Goldie was an active member of the Clearwater Grange #299 serving as Secretary/Treasurer for seventeen years. She was also a member of Friends of the Elk City Wagon Road.    

   After retirement she and Gene enjoyed time spent with friends and family at a multitude of activities including the “Friday Lunch Bunch” in Kooskia and many area dances. They were honored by serving as Grand Marshals for the Clearwater Valley Rodeo in Kamiah. Goldie loved to dance and laugh; she enjoyed life to its fullest.

   Gene took Goldie out of the city, but couldn’t quite take the city out of Goldie.

   Goldie was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Arthur Jr. and Lloyd, sisters Jewell Gibson, Dorothy La Hargoue, and Betty Carpenter, a granddaughter and her husband Gene.

   She is survived by their children, Janice Rohrig and husband Lewis of Toledo, WA, Ed Packer and wife Kari of Jackson, WY, and Debbie Brotnov and husband Monte of Uniontown, WA; sister Jo Hughey of Bakersfield, CA, brother Billy Montgomery of Oregon, seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

   Funeral services will be held at Trenary Funeral Home in Kooskia on 1 o’clock Saturday, March 29, followed by internment at the Pine Grove Cemetery. A covered dish dinner will follow at the IOOF Hall.

   The family suggests memorials be made to the Clearwater Grange or the BPC Fire Department, 1443 Battle Ridge Road, Kooskia, ID 83539.

Evelyn Myers, 75, Weippe

   Evelyn Agnes Puksta Myers of Weippe, died March 24, 2008 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, ID. She was 75.

   Funeral services will be held Monday March 31, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church with rosary at 10 a.m. and funeral service to follow at 11 a.m.

   Pine Hills Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in care of arrangements.

Edward E. Carlock, 81, Orofino

   Edward E. Carlock of Orofino passed away on March 23, 2008, at the age of 81.

   Ed Carlock was born to Daniel and Ellen Carlock on February 12, 1927. They lived on a small farm about four miles outside of New Meadows where he attended school. Ed was inducted into the Army in 1947 where he served during WWII overseas in Okinawa.

   When he returned from service he moved to Orofino where he was employed by Riverside Lumber Company in 1949. Ed ran forklifts handling lumber and later loading boxcars by hand. He was employed continuously until 1981 when the mill was closed. Ed then went to work for Clearwater County Road Department until 1989 when he retired.

   After retirement he worked four more years collecting water samples for the Forest Service at campgrounds. Ed was a very hard working man and provided well for his family.

   Ed married Nellie Doris Bennett July 2, 1949; they were married until her passing on December 24, 1986. They had four children: Larry, Bob, Linda and Shirley. Ed and his family lived in Peck for nine years and later moved to Orofino where they purchased a small farm. They raised a large garden, had chickens, cows and a horse. Ed loved to hunt, fish, and go on family picnics and campouts and play cards.

   Ed was a life time member of the VFW and belonged to the Eagles and the Clearwater County Senior Citizens. Ed did a lot of volunteer work in his later life and he was most proud of receiving Volunteer of the Year in 1997. The title was presented to him at the annual convention in Boise for the Idaho Healthcare Association.

   He is survived by long time companion Helen Vernon, one brother, Glen Carlock: two sisters, Lida Cameron and Viola D’Andrea, one son, Robert Carlock; two daughters, Linda Carlock and Shirley Anderson and seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

   Funeral services for Ed will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 10 a.m. at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel with burial to follow at the Weseman Cemetery. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in care of arrangements.

Kathleen S. Taylor, 54, Rigby

   Kathleen Susan Taylor of Rigby, and formerly of Elk River, passed away at her home Friday, March 7, 2008. She was 54.

   She was born Dec. 8, 1953, in Moscow, to Robert Dean Pfiester and Norma Ann Calene Pfiester. She grew up and attended schools in Elk River and graduated from Elk River High School.

   On Nov. 19, 1994, she married Mike R. Taylor in Coeur d’Alene. She worked at Scotty’s Two in Rigby at the time of her passing.

   She is survived by her parents, Robert and Norma Pfiester of Elk River; two children, Breanne Marie (Mike) Ritchie and Brandon Shane Larson, both of Rigby; two sisters, Christine (Larry) Yockey of Elk River, and Cheryl (Tim) Brinkley of Bellingham, WA. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive her.

   Preceding her in death were a brother, Steven Dean Pfiester, and a nephew.

   A memorial was held March 22 at the Elk River Community Church.

Vera Bennison, 84, Kamiah

   Vera Lorraine Bennison, 84, of Kamiah passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at her home in Kamiah.  Vera was born in Oakland, CA March 8, 1924 to Robert and Jenny (Adamson) Adams. She graduated High School from Sonora, CA and became an LPN. Her nursing work included Sonora, CA, San Jose, CA, and Orofino. She was also a waitress in Reno, NV for a time.

   Her husbands included Wilger Hutchins, Otto Torwick, and Norman Bennison.

   Vera was blessed with three children Bob, Willis, and Linda.

   Vera’s  hobbies included; sewing ,quilting, knitting, and crocheting. She won many purple and blue ribbons at the county fairs.

   Vera was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Jenny Adams; all her siblings; her son Willis; and her husband Norman Bennison.

   Vera is survived by her son, Robert L. Hutchins of Kamiah, Idaho; her daughter, Linda Palin of Eugene, OR; her grandchildren, Sandra Slickpoo, Christine Stanley, LaRae Goodson, Lucille, Christopher, Tanya, Stacy, and William Hutchins, Justin and Ginny Palin; 13 great grandchildren; one great-greatgrandchild; and one special niece, Gail Knutsen.

   A graveside service for Vera was held March 22 at Cottonwood Cemetery in Cottonwood. Pastor Jerry Marsh Officiated.

   Arrangements were handled by Trenary Funeral Home of Kooskia.
