Book of well wishes puts a smile on Katie’s face

Katie Barron turned three on Oct. 15, 2007. Two weeks later, on Oct. 30, she was diagnosed with leukemia. When inmates at Idaho Correctional Institution-Orofino (ICI-O), (or, as Katie’s dad Russell Barron prefers to call them, “our friends at the prison”) heard the news they went into action to brighten a little girl’s journey back to health.

Recently Katie was presented with a giant card signed by those friends, along with a bound book of hand written and heartfelt prayers and messages of encouragement. The friends and guards included a financial donation as well.

Thanks to Katie’s response to treatment, she didn’t require a bone marrow transplant. At this time she is in remission, but treatment continues.

They travel to Spokane twice a week for chemo in this phase, known as delay intensification. She faces another five weeks of treatment there before moving into the maintenance phase.

During maintenance, which last two years, Katie will take pills at home and make monthly trips to Spokane.

Russell Barron said the family has been overwhelmed with the generosity of the community and organizations that have helped them financially since Katie’s diagnosis. He said townspeople treat her like a princess. The family expresses their appreciation to all who have given assistance.
