First day of spring is March 20. Looking forward to less snow and warmer weather. Some adventurous perennials are poking their heads through the ground.
Auditions for the melodrama “Treachery at Cartilage Creek” will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday nights, March 25 and 27 at Weippe City Hall. Suzie says everybody is welcome and if you have questions call her at 435-4617. The play will be presented at the Camas Festival during Memorial Day weekend. It’s always an enjoyable experience and FUN!
At the Discovery Center
Tai Chi class continues at the Discovery Center - 5 p.m. Wednesday nights. Juggling still on at 11:15 Friday mornings. Bring two pairs of socks and learn to juggle.
A Dutch oven cooking class is scheduled for April 5, 2 to 5 p.m. with dinner after the class. There is a small fee for this, all equipment is supplied. Class size is limited, sign up by April 1. Contact phone number is 435-4058.
Pinochle
There were five tables at pinochle on Sunday afternoon. Fred Borders got high school, Oreta Stuart got low and pinochle was won by Sheila Barteau and Dolores Watson.
Senior Center menu
Thursday, March 20 the cooks will be serving hamburgers on a bun, potato salad and jell-o. Monday, March 24 will be German sausage and sauerkraut, seasoned potatoes, vegetable salad and peaches. As usual, meals are served with milk, coffee and tea.
For all walkers, runners
This year the annual Retreat to Weippe Walk/Run during the 8th annual Camas Festival will be sponsored by Nez Perce National Historical Park, Recognition Express and CVHC. Applications may be picked up at the Weippe Library or you can register on line at www.active.com or www.weippe.com. Proceeds support programs at Weippe Discovery Center.
Parenting class
Help your children be their best. Parents are still the number one influence in a child's life. Sometimes it's just the way you say, "Good job," that can change your child's attitude from down to up.
Classes for parents now starting on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. at the Weippe Youth Center building across from the post office. Cost is $10 for materials. Classes last six weeks.
These classes are part of the Nicasa Parent Project sponsored by Clearwater Substance Abuse Workgroup (CSAW). Call Ronda Rhoads at 435-4288 for more information or just show up at class.
GEM Committee
The Gem Community Committee is contracting with Will Leaton to paint more murals on Durant's store. The grant money from Horizons will be used for this project. Will has asked for copies of old photos, especially of people. If you have some you think would be of interest, contact Ronda Rhoads, 435-4288.
Logging displays
As soon as the weather gets warm, work will continue on the Heritage Museum addition. This will house new logging displays and more. Heritage Society members would like to be open more hours this summer to enable travelers/ visitors to view the exhibits.

People
Kyle Johnstun celebrated his 22nd birthday March 15 with a dinner at the home of his parents. Guests were Hailey Brown, Mac Johnstun and Maxine Johnstun, grandmother.
The community is saddened by the deaths of long time residents Hank Spencer and Bob Gangewer. Our sympathies to the families.
Sherry Schlader’s Dad, Bill Jackson, was in the hospital recently with a bad case of the flu. He is home now.
City Council meeting highlights
The regular meeting of the Weippe city council was held Monday, March 10, with the following present: Mayor Norm Steadman, Ron Larson, Millie Morris, Elwin Hutchins, Bob Plotnik, Donna Plotnik, Jim Reynolds, Chief Deputy Chris Goetz, Mike Edmonson and Carla Hartig.
Chief Deputy Goetz reported receiving citizen complaints about the manner in which the newer deputies are enforcing traffic laws. He stated these and other public relations issues have been discussed within the department. He also stated there will be more patrolling during day shift.
A building permit was granted to Donna Plotnik for construction of a sunroom and garage.
Norm reported that he, Mike Edmonson and Clerk met with Randy Eller, Kenny Walters and Larry Schmedding of Empire Lumber on Feb. 21 at their request to discuss their water right application. Norm suggested they amend the application stating they would not obtain water from the City source. Eller wants the City to withdraw the protest and allow them to proceed with the application as written.
Today Kenny Walters delivered a written understanding between Empire and the City as proposed by Empire. The council decided to seek legal advice on the matter.
Pierce Avenue/Cemetery Road Intersection. Larson contacted Mr. Snyder about removing the trees from his property to improve sight distance. Snyder may consider having the trees removed at a later date. Larson will follow up on the matter.
Motion by Larson to accept the proposal from Liquid Engineering for inspection, reporting and cleanout of the water tank for $2850. Hutchins second. Larson-aye, Hutchins-aye, Morris-aye. M/C
The council discussed a parking problem at the Hilltop Senior Center. A letter will be sent to the occupant of the neighboring property as he may not be aware of the property lines and the city right of way.
The council approved the application for a $300 Arbor Day Grant submitted by Marge Kuchynka. Mayor Steadman signed a proclamation declaring April 25, 2008 as Arbor Day in Weippe.
